Amperometric sensor for L-ascorbic acid determination based on MnO2 bulk modified screen printed electrode.

A simple biosensor constructed by bulk-modification of carbon ink with manganese dioxide as a mediator was investigated for its ability to serve as amperometric detector for L-ascorbic acid in hydrodynamic mode. The sensor could be operated at pH 5.0 (0.05 M phosphate buffer) and exhibited excellent reproducibility and stability. Optimization of measurement parameters such as applied working potential and pH value were studied in detail. The screen printed electrode exhibited a linear amperometric increase with the concentration of L-ascorbic acid from 50 mg L(-1) to 250 mg L(-1) and gave a (LOD = 3sigma) detection limit of 0.2 mg L(-1) (1.172 micromol L(-1)). The manganese dioxide modified screen printed electrode shows long term stability.

[Oral complications of chemotherapy of malignant neoplasms].

Function and integrity disorders of the oral cavity fall into the most frequent complication of the chemotherapy of leucemias, malignant lymphomas and solid tumors. Complications associated with cancer chemotherapy can be direct ones, resulting from the toxic action of antineoplastic agents on the proliferative lining of the mouth, or indirect, as a result of myelosuppression and immunosuppression. The most frequent oral complications associated with cancer chemotherapy are mucositis, infection and bleeding. The principles of prevention and management of oral complications during cancer chemotherapy are considered in this paper.

[Stomatologic aspects of radiotherapy of head and neck tumors].

Therapeutic x-irradiation of the oral cavity and the oropharynx is associated with tissue reactions and complications. From dentists view the most important are radiation-induced tooth decay and periodontal disease, xerostomia and osteoradionecrosis from postradiation therapy extractions. In the paper are discussed radiobiological basis for oral cavity tissue reactions and pathophysiology of secondary complications. Finally, recommendations for prevention of oral complications and dental care are given.

[Early prevention of oral diseases].

Considering the intensivity of growth and development of the child in its first year, we might say that this is very dramatic period. Very complex processes of development of orofacial structures occur in the first year. Based on series of investigations, contemporary dental medicine is paying full attention to prevention of oral diseases. New attitude is that preventive measures should be undertaken as early as in the first year of the child's life. Prevention of oral diseases in infancy consists of parental education, adequate diet, oral hygiene and fluoridation. It is important to stress that a attending of dentist at the age of 12 months should not be missed, for there is a lot of important instructions for parents to get, considering future oral health of their child. This means that the children in their first year are very desirable patients for the dentist and preventive measures undertaken at this age will have significant effects on their oral health through their whole life.
