Transabdominal mucosal transection of the esophagus for the treatment of esophageal varices.

Transabdominal mucosal transection of the esophagus was applied to 20 patients with esophageal varices. The operative procedure involves a longitudinal incision of the muscular layers which follows transection and reanastomosis of the denuded mucosa. With the preservation the muscular structure, postoperative complications such as anastomotic leakage, stenosis or regurgitation, have been minimized. The effect of this procedure on the varices proved satisfactory.

[Effects of histamine and its derivatives on the excitability of a giant identifiable neuron of Achatina fulica Férussac. A histaminergic receptor different from H1 and H2].

A giant neurone of Achatina fulica Férussac (the TAN, tonically autoactive neurone) is excited by histamine. Pharmacological characteristics of its histaminergic reception are quite different from those of H1 and H2 receptors. The effect of histamine on the TAN is antagonized by neither mepyramine nor burimamide.

Inhibitory effect of beta-hydroxyglutamic acid on a molluscan giant neurone.

We found a spontaneously firing neurone, inhibited by beta-hydroxy(erythro)-L-glutamic acid, identified in the subesophageal ganglia of an African giant snail (Achatina fulica Férussac), although this neurone is not sensitive to L-glutamic acid. We suggest that beta-hydroxy(erythro)-L-glutamic acid may be a putative inhibitory synaptic transmitter of the identified molluscan neurone.

Histopathological studies on experimentally induced pulmonary adenomatosis in guinea-pig lungs.

The main purpose of our experimental series was to induce, in experimental animals, diffuse pulmonary fibrosis resembling that in human lungs. In the lungs of guinea-pigs injected with a soluble immune complex and continuously exposed to a 40-60 per cent oxygen-rich atmosphere, diffuse pulmonary fibrosis occurred in many cases in the course of 2 to 3 months after the injection. After the 100th experimental day, multiple foci of pulmonary adenomatosis occurred. The morphology was similar to that of Jaagsiekte. Electron microscopic observations revealed that these hyperplastic cells originated from type II pneumoncytes.

Experimental pulmonary fibrosis induced by soluble immune complex and 60% oxygen atmosphere.

In our previous papers we reported characteristic morphological changes of the capillary endothelium in the lung and of the arterial endothelium. These changes were induced by administration of various soluble immune complexes. In this paper we have induced pulmonary fibrosis in guinea pigs under allergic procedures. Administration of soluble immune complexes alone produces interstitial pneumonia. However, these changes would not normally result in diffuse pulmonary fibrosis. The administration of soluble immune complexes to guinea pigs plus exposure to a 60% oxygen-rich atmosphere yielded diffuse pulmonary fibrosis.

Experimental osteomyelitis induced by repeated administration of soluble immune complexes: consideration of the fundamental pathogenesis of osteomyelitis.

Morphological changes of blood vessel walls including various kinds of capillaries have been induced by administration of soluble immune complexes. After repeated administrations, those experimental animals who survived the phase of initial anaphylactic shock developed osteomyelitis. In this paper, the formative processes of osteomyelitis will be discussed in relation to Aschoff's definition of inflammation. We will emphasize the importance of the capillarization of the sinusoidal endothelia for the formation of osteomyelitis.

[Catecholamines in the sub-esophageal ganglia and the hemolymph of the giant African snail (Achatina fulica Férussac) determined by gas chromatography].

The content of three catecholamines (dopamine, L-norepinephrine and L-epinephrine) in the subesophageal ganglia and the hemolymph of Achatina fulica Férussac was measured by a gas chromatograph with electron capture detector. The dopamine content of the ganglia was 4.3 +/- 0.9 mug/g. L-Norepinephrine and L-epinephrine in the ganglia were not detected. The three catecholamines in the hemolymph were also not detected.

[Relationship between current and voltage in neuromembranes measured by a generator of long-term triangular current].

A generator of triangular current of long duration was constructed to measure the current-voltage relationship (I-V curve) of neuromembranes. Using this instrument, we observed the effect of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) on the I-V curve of an identified giant neurone (PON) of Achatina fulica Férussac. When two I-V curves (measured in the physiological state and under the 5-HT application) were superimposed by using the firing level as the common standard point, a concordance of two I-V curves in wide range of membrane polarization was observed.
