A 48-year-old man had histologically demonstrated cardiac involvement associated with progressive muscular dystrophy. On coronary arteriography, numerous vascular communications between the coronary arteries and the left ventricular chamber were found. These vascular communications are considered to be the arterioluminal vessels. This is the first report of a case of progressive muscular dystrophy with numerous arterioluminal vessels.

Left ventricular diastolic function and systolic function were evaluated using a recently-developed computerized cardiac nuclear probe (CNP). We measured left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and ejection rate (ER) as the systolic function, and peak filling rate (PFR) and time to peak filling rate (TPFR) as the diastolic function in 95 patients including 34 ischemics, 38 hypertensives, and 23 anthracyclin-treated after the intravenous injection of 5 to 20 mCi Tc99m-albumin. The reproducibility of the measurements was studied, and the measurements were correlated with conventional gamma-camera cardiac blood scintigraphic and echocardiographic measurements. Reproducibility of the measurements using the cardiac nuclear probe were excellent for each measurement, and the correlation coefficients were 0.96 for LVEF, 0.88 for ER, 0.91 for PFR, and 0.80 for TPFR, respectively. LVEF by CNP correlated well with that by the gamma-camera (r=0.82, p less than 0.001) and echocardiography (r=0.76, p less than 0.001). LVEF, ER and PFR in ischemic heart disease were all significantly less (p less than 0.05), and TPFR was significantly greater (p less than 0.05) than those in the other study groups. These results emphasized the high resolution temporal imaging capacity of CNP and suggested that left ventricular filling abnormalities evaluated by CNP would be useful for the identification of incipient cardiac dysfunction.
We conducted a neuropsychological study comparing early-stage Alzheimer's disease (AD; n = 22) and multiple subcortical infarction with mild cognitive impairment (MSI; n = 22) using an easily applicable test battery which included 8 tests. Two groups were matched for age, education and score on the Mini-Mental State Examination. Patients with AD had significantly lower scores than MSI patients in the delayed recall of the Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure, while MSI patients had significantly worse scores in the Wisconsin Card-Sorting Test. This suggests that early discrimination of MSI from AD can be made by frontal system impairment in MSI and episodic memory disturbance in the visuospatial domain in AD using simple neuropsychological tests.
The effect of amogastrin on the release of 5 types of prostaglandins (PGs) [PGE2, 6-keto-PGF1 alpha, PGF2 alpha, PGD2, and thromboxan B2 (TXB2)] into the gastric lumen was evaluated in seven healthy volunteers. Gastric juice was obtained under basal and amogastrin-stimulated conditions. The 5 types of PGs in the gastric juice were separated by high-performance liquid chromatography and then measured by radioimmunoassay. PGE2 was the major component in gastric juices among the PGs measured in this study. The release of 5 types of PGs increased after amogastrin administration. The rate of increase was high for PGE2 and 6-keto-PGF1 alpha (3.48 and 3.98 respectively), whereas it was low for PGD2 (1.54). It is suggested that endogenously synthesized PGs, especially PGE2 and PGI2 (assayed as 6-keto-PGF1 alpha), play important roles in the gastric mucosal protection and the regulation of acid secretion.
