[Radiographical changes in the elbow joints of chainsaw operators].

The purpose of this study is to clarify the relation between the labor history of chainsaw operators and changes in their elbow joints. Osteophytic and degenerative changes on X-ray films of the elbow joints were compared quantitatively between chainsaw operators and a control group of age-matched road maintenance workers. Subjects were divided into three groups according to length of chainsaw use. Although no statistically significant differences were found among the three groups, radiographical examination showed significant changes (p less than 0.05) in the subjects as compared with the controls. Because of other labor factors that were not considered, the existence of a dose-response relationship between elbow damage and length of chainsaw use cannot be confirmed from this study, but such a relationship is suggested.

A review of the trend in facilities for health services in the community.

After the Second World War, the field of medicine has changed remarkably in Japan. A comprehensive health and medical care system has been organized to meet the increasing needs and demands for health and medical care services. Health centers have played an important role in promoting health care activities in the community. The authors describe the development of health centers and other health care facilities in Japan. The authors propose that it is necessary to build a new health facility specifically designed for public health nurse activities, termed a "public health nurse station". The authors also describe the status of the health care facilities in service and the activities of the stations and evaluated them. It is concluded that the stations have brought many changes in the field of health and medical care; moreover that the station should not become a substitute for a health center but should be a facility for public health nurse activities in a community. Health centers should also play important roles for comprehensive medical services in the future.

Effects of topically applied bupranolol on the intraocular pressure. Effects on the untreated eye.

Topically applied bupranolol, a beta-adrenergic blocking agent, has been shown to have a marked effectiveness in lowering the intraocular pressure of the normal and glaucomatous eyes. The effects were not only seen in the treated eyes but also in the untreated, contralateral eyes. The contralateral response was independent of the ongoing diurnal variation of the intraocular pressure. Instillation of the drug into the nasal cavity induced decrease of the intraocular pressure in both eyes, the extent of which was comparable to the contralateral response induced by ocular instillation. These observations suggest that the contralateral response is caused by systemically absorbed drug, probably due to the action on the central locus regulating the intraocular pressure. Instillation of pilocarpine did not show any similar contralateral response.
