Therapy with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs often causes gastroduodenal side effects. Changes in the gastric mucosa were studied by determination of serum pepsinogen I and pepsinogen II by the means of radioimmunoassay. 41 patients with degenerative rheumatic diseases were divided into two groups, 21 patients receiving 600 mg S(+) ibuprofen daily (3 x 200mg) and 20 patients receiving 900 mg S(+) ibuprofen daily (3 x 300 mg) over a 14-day period. No significant increase occurred in mean and median values of pepsinogen I and II. Indeed, no changes in serum pepsinogen I and II were noted in 80% of the patients in the higher dosage group and in more than 90% of the lower dosage group. None of the gastroduodenal side effects frequently reported during therapy with non-steroidal anti-rheumatic drugs occurred.

A prospective study was carried out to investigate the contribution of rhinoviruses to respiratory viral infections in children and to investigate the influence of age, passive smoking, and educational level of the head of the family on the clinical course of viral respiratory disease. Nasopharyngeal aspirates from 519 infants (90.8% inpatients, 9.2% outpatients) were screened for the presence of rhinoviruses, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), adenoviruses, parainfluenza virus types 1, 2, 3, influenza virus types A and B, and enteroviruses by tissue culture isolation procedure, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and/or indirect immunofluorescence method. The total detection rate was 42.4%. The rate decreased with increasing age. Higher detection rates were observed in specimens from children suffering from a more severe respiratory disease, and the highest rate of virus-positive specimens was found in those aged 0-6 months. Second to RSV (23.1%), rhinoviruses were the most frequently recovered pathogens found in 11.8% of children with acute respiratory tract infections (RTI). In the age group 0-6 months the majority of severe respiratory illnesses was due to RSV. In infants aged 6 months to 1 year a decrease in the number of severe illnesses caused by RSV and an increase in the number of children suffering from a more severe RTI caused by rhinoviruses was found. With the possible exception of one group of children infected with rhinoviruses, a negative effect of passive smoking on the incidence and severity of viral RTI could not be established. A beneficial effect of breast feeding on the severity of viral RTI could not be definitely demonstrated.

3 patients with a congenital pulmonary arteriovenous fistula are presented. The clinical signs of this condition are dependent on the size of the functional right to left shunt. The symptoms worsen with increasing arterial hypoxemia. Due to the hemodynamics of arteriovenous fistulas signs of cardiac hypertrophy are usually not seen on ECG of X-ray examination. However, in almost all cases pulmonary X-ray shadows are found. In addition, nearly 50% also have an hereditary hemorrhagic telangiektasis. The diagnosis must be verified in every case by cardiac catheterisation with angiography, since only exact anatomic data can give precise information on whether or not an operation is possible.
The authors examined serologically 623 wild living animals (22 species) from North Tyrol for the incidence of leptospirosis. Positive reactions (MAL) in the titre 1: 100 and more were found in 4.5% of the animals examined; the serotypes concerned were these: icterohaemorrhagiae, sorex-jalna, castellonis or arboreae, grippotyphosa, bratislava, pomona, sejroe, saxkoebing. Positive reactions were obtained with the sera of Sorex araneus, Erinaceus europaeus, Putorius putorius, Vulpes vulpes, Cervus elaphus, Capreolus capreolus, Rupicapra rupicapra, Apodemus sp., Clethrionomys glareolus. The serotypes forming natural foci of leptospirosis in North Tyrol are these: sorex-jalna, grippotyphosa, bratislava, saxkoebing and, apparently, jalna. Synanthropic foci are formed by icterohaemorrhagiae or copenhageni and sejroe.
Results are presented of a serological examination of 1,547 domestic animals (cattle, pig, sheep, horse, goat, dog, cat) from 9 Tyrolian districts (Austria), performed in order to disclose the incidence of leptospirosis. Completely significant titres were domonstrated by means of the MAL test in the serotypes icterohaemorrhagiae or copenhageni, sorex-jalna, bratislava, sejroe and saxkoebing. In addition, antibodies were confirmed against L. bataviae, L. pomona, L. tarassovi and L. bulgarica, but the titres were insignificant. Of the animals examined, 7.2% gave positive reactions in titres of 1: 800 and above (for dogs and cats 1: 100 and more); positive reactions were obtained from 8.8% of cattle serum, 6.8% of pig-, 1.1% of sheep-, 3.3% of dog-, 18.2% of cat serum. A positive reaction was obtained with the serum of one out of the 9 horses examined, the sera of the two goats examined were negative. he percentage of positivity in animals from the individual districts ranged from 1.0 to 17.0, and variations were found also in the distribution of serotypes in the individual districts. The results indicate that the percentage of positivity in domestic animals from Tyrol decreases as the altitude of the localities increases.

Radioimmunological assays of HPL have been carried out in early pregnancy in uncomplicated cases (n = 100) and in cases of abortus imminens (n = 49). The earliest detection of HPL was possible in the 6th week of pregnancy. When the tendency of the HPL-level was decreasing follow-up examination showed a beginning abortus. In every case of decreased HPL-level the progress of pregnancy was abnormal. Conclusions about the prognostic value and the limits of the HPL-RIA are discussed.
