[Mycoplasma bovis-free breeding of cattle].

On a cattle farm latently infected by M. bovis, field studies aiming at the formation of a mycoplasma free herd, were carried out with a group of newborn female calves. These calves were strictly separated from their dams and any other cattle immediately after parturition. Intensive investigations for mycoplasmas were made over 30 months (mycoplasma isolation from nasal swabs, antibody detection by means of indirect hemagglutination test and ELISA technique). M. bovis could never be isolated from the samples. Also, there were no antibodies to M. bovis. In some animals antibody titers to M. bovis occurred after having contact with cattle infected with M. bovis. The results demonstrate a practicable way to establish cattle herds free from M. bovis infection.

[Neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia--can cryopreserved thrombocytes help? (Case report)].

We present a case report of the transfusion of cryopreserved HPA 1-negative platelets to a newborn suffering from neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia (NAT). A boy weighing 3450 g, born of a HPA1-negative mother with a platelet count of 9 Gpt/l after delivery, received two transfusions of cryopreserved HPA1-negative platelet concentrates. The first transfusion resulted in a platelet increment to 32 Gpt/l (CCI 11). A second transfusion was needed after a further drop of the platelet count on day 4 to 18 Gpt/l, resulting in an increment to 64 Gpt/l (CCI 36). Normal development during the first six months was obtained. In our opinion, cryopreserved HPA1-negative platelets could be helpful in the therapeutical strategy of NAT.

Ambroxol for prevention and treatment of hyaline membrane disease.

To estimate the efficacy of ambroxol for clinical use in prenatal prevention and postnatal therapy of hyaline membrane disease (HMD) all available experimental and clinical data were reviewed. The administration of ambroxol in animals has a certain promoting influence on lung maturation, a high specificity to lung tissue and a favourable relationship between intended action and negative adverse effects. In clinical studies concerning the prevention of HMD, ambroxol increases the values of amniotic fluid parameters used for estimation of lung maturity and reduces the incidence of HMD at least as effectively as corticosteroids. The number of infants at less than 33 gestational weeks in these reports is small, and further studies will have to confirm the results. Ambroxol applied postnatally has beneficial effects on the course of severe HMD by increasing survival rate, by decreasing duration of oxygen need and artificial ventilation and by improving compliance. Pharmacological studies in preterm HMD-infants showed no influence of ambroxol on blood pressure and heart rate. In 3 of 8 newborns a transient increase of transcutaneous oxygen tension was seen during infusion of ambroxol. Ambroxol is quickly bound to tissue receptors which release it continuously indicating that repeated applications are as effective as continuous infusion.

[Characterization of intraurethral relations of urine flow in childhood using the Doppler ultrasound technic].

In a number of diseases in childhood (vesico-ureteral reflux, myelodysplasia, recurrent urinary tract infection, enuresis) it is important to evaluate the functional patterns of the micturition phase. The therapeutic regimen is influenced especially by changes of the urethral flow resistance. The value of urodynamic methods which are available for the characterization of the micturition phase is limited because of the small anatomic conditions in childhood. The presented method of measurement of the intraurethral urinary flow using an ultrasound doppler technique is recommended as an alternative technique because of its superior diagnostic safety and unrestricted application in childhood.

Structure of the levan elaborated by Streptococcus salivarius strain 51: an application of chemical-ionisation mass-spectrometry.

The polysaccharide elaborated by Streptococcus salivarius strain 51 contains beta-D-fructofuranose residues linked through positions 2 and 6, as well as 1, 2, and 6. The approximate numbers of terminal, non-reducing D-fructofuranose residues and those linked through positions 2 and 6, and through 1, 2, and 6 in the average repeating-unit are 1, 7, and 1, respectively. The branches through the beta-(2 leads to 1)-linkage contain up to at least four D-fructofuranose residues. Chemical-ionisation mass-spectrometry aids the assignment of structures to O-acetyl-O-methylalditols obtained in methylation analysis.
