Effects of stress on female rat sexual function.

This study was undertaken to investigate whether prolonged stress interferes with sexual behavior and changes biochemical and physiologic mechanisms. Experiments were repeated three times with different rats in each period. In all, 63 female Sprague-Dawley rats were employed, with 21 rats in each period, and the control group was maintained at room temperature with free access to food and water. The stress group was maintained under a scheduled stress condition for 10 days, and seven rats from the group were randomly selected and exposed to the control environment for 10 days as the recovery group. Sexual behavior, hormonal values, and neuronal and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (nNOS and eNOS) expressions of vaginal tissue were analyzed and compared. Serum testosterone levels were significantly elevated in the stress and recovery groups (P<0.05). Female rats in the stress group showed reduced receptivity to their male mates (P<0.05). Western blot analysis demonstrated that nNOS and eNOS expressions were significantly lower in the stress group (P<0.05) than in the other groups. We conclude that chronic physical stress modifies the sexual behavior of female rats through a mechanism believed to involve complex changes in sex hormones, endocrine factors, and neurotransmitters.

The effect of overactive bladder syndrome on the sexual quality of life in Korean young and middle aged women.

Some reports showed that urinary incontinence (UI) or female lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) affect life quality and sexual activity. In clinical practice, it is commonly found that not only the symptoms of UI but also overactive bladder (OAB) syndrome affect daily lifestyle and sexual activity, especially in women in the most active era in their social and personal life. However, there is lack of data proving the effect of OAB syndrome on sexual activity or sexual life quality in sexually active age group. This study aimed at evaluating the effect of OAB syndrome and UI on the sexual activity and on the sexual quality of life (QoL) of Korean women age from 20s to 40s. We investigated 3372 women aged between 20 and 49 y, enrolled via a multicenter internet survey. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data about their LUTS and sexual activities. The prevalence of OAB syndrome and UI in 3372 women was 12.7 and 21.0%, respectively. Mean subject age was 26.4+/-4.8 y and 79.5% of subjects were 20-29 y old. Having OAB syndrome or UI were found to be significant predictors of sexual life problems (OAB syndrome: OR=5.08, 95% CI=3.68-7.01; UI: OR=4.16, 95% CI=3.06-5.67). Sexual activity was significantly reduced in OAB syndrome and UI versus the asymptomatic group (OAB syndrome: OR=4.8, 95% CI=3.14-6.83; UI: OR=3.9, 95% CI=2.81-5.27). This study is the first internet-based study concerning the sexual QoL in UI and OAB syndrome. In this study, OAB syndrome was found to cause a greater deterioration in the sexual QoL than UI. These results suggest that these symptoms have a significant impact upon women's personal and social lives and markedly affect the QoL.

Bladder volume measurement with electrical impedance analysis in spinal cord-injured patients.

The purpose of the study contained herein was to determine the usefulness of electrical impedance for measurement of bladder volume in spinal cord-injured patients, with an assessment of the relationship between electrical impedance and bladder volume exclusively. The study was performed during urodynamic studies to match the exact bladder volume. Thirteen patients with complete spinal cord injuries were recruited. We used silver-silver chloride compound electrodes composed of one pair of current and amplitude electrodes to minimize the influence of superficial skin impedance. Each compound electrode was attached on the lower abdomen bilaterally after skin cleansing. Constant current (60 kHz-1.0 mA), converted from 9 V of direct current, was applied, and corresponding electrical impedance (omega) was measured at "pre" (before urodynamic empty bladder), "full" (with a urodynamic filled bladder), and "post" (after urodynamic empty bladder) status. Electrical impedance at the full status was definitely lower than that at the pre and post statuses in all subjects, with a statistically significant difference (P < 0. 001). The correlation between electrical impedance and bladder volume was negative (r = -0.7988), and the fact of how much the variation in electrical impedance could be explained by variation in bladder volume was estimated (r2 = 0.6381). From these findings, we have determined that the electrical impedance analysis technique can be an alternative measure of bladder volume indirectly.

An arteriovenous malformation model for testing liquid embolic materials.

An arteriovenous malformation model with a transparent nidus was constructed to investigate the embolization behavior of polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) solution relative to flow velocity in the feeding artery and injection speed. It was found that the liquid embolic material flowed distally when injected too fast or when the flow velocity was too low. In addition, we found that solution consisting of PVAc plus metrizamide was a better embolic material than solution containing only PVAc.
