Thiazole-containing benzo-crown ethers: a new class of ammonium-selective ionophores

A new class of crown ethers containing heterocyclic units has been designed to develop synthetic NH4+-selective ionophores whose resulting potentiometric properties in solvent polymeric membranes are superior or at least comparable to those of nonactin. It was found that the derivatives of thiazole containing dibenzo-18-crown-6 (1; TDB18C6) incorporated in PVC-based membranes provide enhanced NH4+ selectivities over alkali metal cations, especially over Na+, compared to those of the nonactin-doped membranes: for example, the selectivity coefficients, log K(POT)NH4+J (J = Li+, Na+, K+), for the 2-nitrophenyloctyl ether (NPOE) plasticized PVC membranes doped with the hexyl chain-substituted TDB18C6 (2) were -4.9, -3.9, and -1.3, while those for the same type of membranes with nonactin -4.4, -3.0, and -1.0, respectively. Unlike other synthetic NH4+-selective neutral carriers reported to date, TDB18C6-type compounds result in potentiometric performance highly comparable to that of the nonactin-based ones except their slightly higher detection limits (approximately 3 x 10(-6) vs 7 x 10(-7)). The complex formation between TDB18C6 and NH4+ was identified from 1H NMR spectra. The 1:1 complex formation constant of TDB18C6 with NH4+ in solvent polymeric membranes estimated using the method suggested by Bakker et al. and the NH4+ selectivity coefficient over K+ (K(POT)NH4+,K+) are approximately 200 times smaller than that of nonactin (1.8 x 10(7) vs 3.6 x 10(9)).

Multilayered assembly of dendrimers with enzymes on gold: thickness-controlled biosensing interface

A new approach to construct a multilayered enzyme film on the Au surface for use as a biosensing interface is described. The film was prepared by alternate layer-by-layer depositions of G4 poly(amidoamine) dendrimers and periodate-oxidized glucose oxidase (GOx). The cyclic voltammograms obtained from the Au electrodes modified with the GOx/dendrimer multilayers revealed that bioelectrocatalytic response is directly correlated to the number of deposited bilayers, that is, to the amount of active enzyme immobilized on the Au electrode surface. From the analysis of voltammetric signals, the coverage of active enzyme per GOx/dendrimer bilayer during the multilayer-forming steps was estimated, which demonstrates that the multilayer is constructed in a spatially ordered manner. Also, with the ellipsometric measurements, a linear increment of the film thickness was registered, supporting the formation of the proposed multilayered structure. The E5D5 electrode showed the sensitivity of 14.7 microA x mM(-1) glucose x cm(-2) and remained stable over 20 days under day-by-day calibrations. The proposed method is simple and would be applicable to the constructions of thickness- and sensitivity-controllable biosensing interfaces composed of multienzymes as well as a single enzyme.

Prediction of sound transmission loss through multilayered panels by using Gaussian distribution of directional incident energy

In this study, a new prediction method is suggested for sound transmission loss (STL) of multilayered panels of infinite extent. Conventional methods such as random or field incidence approach often given significant discrepancies in predicting STL of multilayered panels when compared with the experiments. In this paper, appropriate directional distributions of incident energy to predict the STL of multilayered panels are proposed. In order to find a weighting function to represent the directional distribution of incident energy on the wall in a reverberation chamber, numerical simulations by using a ray-tracing technique are carried out. Simulation results reveal that the directional distribution can be approximately expressed by the Gaussian distribution function in terms of the angle of incidence. The Gaussian function is applied to predict the STL of various multilayered panel configurations as well as single panels. The compared results between the measurement and the prediction show good agreements, which validate the proposed Gaussian function approach.

Asymmetric Total Synthesis of Fluvirucinine A(1).

Diastereoselective vinyl addition to an amide carbonyl group and amide enolate induced aza-Claisen rearrangement are the key steps in the first asymmetric total synthesis of fluvirucinine A(1) (1), the aglycon of fluvirucin A(1). Fluvirucins are a class of macrolactam antibiotics produced by actinomycete strains that show promising biological properties.
