Substrate temperature effect on the refractive index and a two-step film method to detect small inhomogeneities in optical films.

Nb2O5 films were deposited by a reactive magnetron sputtering technique. The average refractive index was found to increase with the rise of substrate temperature. Modulated interference transmittance spectra were observed in the two-step films, which were prepared by stopping the deposition process in the middle of the designed sputtering time, and then, after a full cooling down to room temperature, starting the same deposition process again to complete the whole preparation of the films. A linearly graded-index model was used to explain the interference behavior. It was proved that the two-step film method was sensitive to the small inhomogeneity in the films. We also suggest that the inhomogeneity of sputtered films can be minimized by controlling the substrate temperature at a constant value.

Dielectric properties and frequency response of self-assembled monolayers of alkanethiols.

This paper presents dielectric properties of alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) under an ac electric field. Using a Hg-SAM/SAM-Hg junction, we measured the ac impedance of alkanethiol SAMs using a sinusoidal perturbation of 30 mV (peak-to-peak) with frequency ranging from 1 Hz to 1 MHz at zero bias. Semicircles at higher frequencies and at middle frequencies along with Warburg lines at lower frequencies were observed in complex plane impedance plots, that is, Nyquist plots. The frequency response of SAMs was analyzed by modeling the junction using an equivalent circuit and fitting the Nyquist plots. The semicircles at higher frequencies are attributed to the effect of the SAM/SAM interfaces, and the ones at middle frequencies are attributed to the effect of alkanethiol SAMs. The comparison in the plots of the imaginary part of the impedance Z against frequency for the bare Hg electrodes (in pure ethanal) and the SAM-covered Hg electrodes (in alkanethiol solution) supports the analysis. The Warburg lines are attributed to a certain ionic impurity. The dielectric loss spectra are further analyzed. Chain-length-dependent peaks, which correspond to different relaxation mechanisms, at higher frequencies and middle frequencies were observed in the spectra of the dissipation factor (tan delta vs frequency). The peaks move to small frequency with the increase of chain length of alkanethiols. Using a correlation of peak position with the chain length, we then derived active energies of 39-99 meV for alkanethiol SAMs of C7-C18 under an ac electric field.

High-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy for molecules.

Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) can detect individual molecular configuration with its high spatial resolution ability, but some intrinsical and extrinsic factors result in the complexities of STM imaging of single molecules. By combining STM experimental work and theoretical simulation with the local density approximation based on Bardeen perturbation method, we have explored the atomic-scale configuration of the following molecular systems: C(60) molecules adsorbed on Si(111)-(7x7); alkanethiol self-assembly monolayers on Au(111); C(60) molecule imaged by STM tip adsorbed with another C(60) molecule; O(2) molecule adsorbed on Ag(110) and CO molecule adsorbed on Cu(111) imaged by CO chemically modified STM tip. Some related problems including: molecule-substrate interactions, STM imaging mechanism, chemically modified STM tip, etc., are discussed.

Disorder and suppression of quantum confinement effects in Pd nanoparticles.

Size-selectable ligand-passivated crystalline and amorphous Pd nanoparticles (<4 nm) are synthesized by a novel two-phase process and verified by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy preformed at 5 K on these two types of nanoparticles exhibits clear Coulomb blockade and Coulomb staircases. Size dependent multipeak spectral features in the differential conductance curve are observed for the crystalline Pd particles but not for the amorphous particles. Theoretical analysis shows that these spectral features are related to the quantized electronic states in the crystalline Pd particle. The suppression of the quantum confinement effect in the amorphous particle arises from the reduction of the degeneracy of the eigenstates and the level broadening due to the reduced lifetime of the electronic states.

Low-temperature orientationally ordered structures of two-dimensional C60.

Orientationally ordered structures of two-dimensional (2D) C(60) at low temperature have been investigated theoretically and experimentally. Using total energy optimization with a phenomenological potential, we find the ground state is a close packed hexagonal lattice in which all the molecules have the same orientation. Several local minima of the potential energy surface are found to be associated with other 1 x 1 lattices as well as 2 x 2 lattices. The energies of the orientational domain boundaries of the 1x1 lattices are also computed, and two kinds of which yield negative values. A majority of these theoretical findings are confirmed by our low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy study of a 2D C(60) array supported on a self-assembled monolayer.
