Reactivity of indanedioneketene dimer with amines.

The highly reactive indanedioneketene 5, resulting from the thermal decomposition of phenyliodonium ylide of 2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone (lawsone, 4), in the absence of nucleophiles dimerizes to the corresponding tetraoxo spiro oxetanone 6 in quantitative yield. This oxetanone exhibits an interesting reactivity toward amines.

Two-dimensional square-grid frameworks formed by self-associating copper(II) complexes with 1-(3-pyridyl)- and 1-(4-pyridyl)-substituted butane-1,3-diones.

In bis[1-(3-pyridyl)butane-1,3-dionato]copper(II) (the Cu atom occupies a centre of inversion), [Cu(C9H8NO2)2], (I), and bis[1-(4-pyridyl)butane-1,3-dionato]copper(II) methanol solvate, [Cu(C9H8NO2)2].CH3OH, (II), the O,O'-chelating diketonate ligands support square-planar coordination of the metal ions [Cu-O=1.948 (1)-1.965 (1) A]. Weaker Cu...N interactions [2.405 (2)-2.499 (2) A], at both axial sides, occur between symmetry-related bis(1-pyridylbutane-1,3-dionato)copper(II) molecules. This causes their self-organization into two-dimensional square-grid frameworks, with uniform [6.48 A for (I)] or alternating [4.72 and 6.66 A for (II)] interlayer separations. Guest methanol molecules in (II) reside between the distal layers and form weak hydrogen bonds to coordinated O atoms [O...O=3.018 (4) A].

Metal-organic frameworks incorporating Cu3(mu3-OH) clusters.

Interaction of 4,4-bi(1,2,4-triazole) (btr) with copper(II) chloride (bromide) in aqueous or aqueous alcohol media led to a series of coordination polymers featuring the formation of mu 3-hydroxotricopper(II) clusters and their integration into 3D frameworks. These unprecedented structures originate in the propagation of trigonal hydroxotricopper(II) clusters bridged by tri- or tetradentate organic ligands. Complex [{Cu3(mu3-OH)}{Cu3(mu3-O)}(mu4-btr)3(H2O)4(OH)2Cl6]Cl.0.5H2O adopts a structure of SrSi2 topology, with eight-fold interpenetration of the coordination frameworks. The structure of [{Cu3(mu3-OH)}2(mu3-btr)6(mu4-btr)(mu-X)X4]X5.nH2O (X = Br, n = 6; X = Cl, n = 8) involves 2D coordination layers [{Cu3(mu3-OH)}(mu3-btr)3]n with an exceptional (3,6)-net topology, which are cross-linked by tetradentate btr ligands and bridging chloride (bromide) ions.

Extended coordination frameworks incorporating heterobimetallic squares.

The molecular structure of aluminium and iron(III) complexes with 3-phenyl and 3-(4-pyridyl) (HL) substituted acetylacetonate ligands is appreciably distorted. For AlL3 and FeL3 this shows that the orientation of the side pyridyl-N donor atoms lone pairs is about 90 and 135 degrees which favours the assembly of heterobimetallic square patterns in Al(Fe)L3 complexes with metal ions. This was employed for the modular construction of semi-regular heterobimetallic networks, in which the pyridyldiketonate ligands bridge pairs of Fe(Al)/Cd(Co) metal ions and support the structure of 1D and 2D coordination polymers. The unprecedented 2D structure of [Cd[AlL3](CH3OH)[NO3]2].2CHCl3 and Cd[AlL3](CH3OH)Br2].2CHCl3 . 2CH3OH is based upon plane tiling by a set of heterobimetallic squares and octagons, while [Cd[FeL3]2(NO3)2].2H2O and [Co[AlL3]2Cl2].4CHCl3 . 2CH3OH are 1D polymers and exist as chains of heterobimetallic squares sharing opposite vertices.

Fused pyridazines: rigid multidentates for designing and fine-tuning the structure of hybrid organic/inorganic frameworks.

Fused pyridazines (1,2,3,6,7,8-hexahydro-cinnolino[5,4,3-cde]cinnoline, L and its 2,2,7,7-tetramethyl derivative, Me4L) are designed as rigid multidentate ligands for the construction of framework solids. In combination with copper(I) bromide (iodide) they provide excellent structural examples for predictive engineering and the possibilities for further fine-tuning of the framework architectures facilitated by the tetradentate function of the ligands and effective cooperation of organic and inorganic bridges. This study features control over helical structures for (CuX)n chains and homo/heterochiral combination of the helices in the lattice, the design of a range of channelled and tubular CuX networks and the structural significance of ligand shape complementarity. 3D tetragonal Cu2X2(L) frameworks exist either as chiral or achiral supramolecular isomers Cu2I2(Me4L) and Cu12I12[Cu(CH3CN)]3(L)(6-)Cu3I6.CH3CN illustrate 3D hexagonal channelled and tubular arrays; Cu2I2(Me4L)(CH3CN) and Cu4I4(L)(CH3CN)2 complexes are 1D polymers.

[mu-3,4'-Bi-1,2,4-triazole-di-micro-chloro-copper(II) monohydrate].

In the title compound, mu-3,4'-bi-1,2,4-triazole-di-mu-chloro-copper(II) monohydrate, [[CuCl(2)(C(4)H(4)N(6))].H(2)O](n), the Cu atom is located in a distorted octahedron consisting of two N atoms and four Cl atoms. The structural unit is an infinite chain in which octahedral groups, connected by shared edges, are also linked by bitriazole molecules. The bitriazole ligand, the Cu atom and the water O atom all lie on independent twofold axes. The structure is held together by hydrogen bonds between the water molecules and the non-coordinated N atoms of the ligand, and by van der Waals forces.
