Comparison study of atomic and molecular single ionization in the multiphoton ionization regime.

In this Letter, we report, for the first time in the multiphoton ionization regime, a comparison study of single-electron ionization of diatomic molecules versus rare gas atoms with virtually the same ionization potentials. In comparing N2+ to Ar+, a higher ion signal is seen in N2+ compared to Ar+ for linear polarization but the difference vanishes in circularly polarized light. In comparing O2+ to Xe+, we observe a suppression in O2+ compared to Xe+ for both linear and circular polarization but this suppression exhibits an intensity dependence; i.e., there is little suppression for O2+ at the lowest intensity range, but the suppression becomes increasingly stronger as the laser intensity increases. The multielectron screening model is used to discuss possible mechanisms of this intensity dependent suppression in O2+ in the multiphoton ionization regime.

Efficient and stable single-photon counting at 1.55 microm by intracavity frequency upconversion.

A single-photon signal at 1.55 microm was converted to the visible region by sum-frequency mixing with a strong pumping beam at 1064 nm in a periodically poled lithium niobate crystal placed in a diode-pumped Nd:YVO4 laser cavity. As the intracavity pump laser could be automatically stabilized without cavity lock, robust long-term stability was demonstrated for single-photon frequency upconversion, with a conversion efficiency of 74.3%. Such a stable single-photon upconversion was demonstrated to be efficient and robust for single-photon counting at 1550 nm, and the corresponding background noise was measured at less than 420 x 10(3) s(-1).

Multigate single-photon detection and timing discrimination with an InGaAs/lnP avalanche photodiode.

Multigate detection of single photons at 1550 nm is achieved by using capacitor-balanced InGaAs/InP avalanche photodiodes, with which we experimentally demonstrate the efficient discrimination of single-photon timing by counting single-photon clicks and the corresponding afterpulses within the multiple gates. Results show that the technique of multigate detection is a practical method for the single-photon timing information process.

Generation and weak beam control of two-dimensional multicolored arrays in a quadratic nonlinear medium.

We report on the first experimental observation of 2D multicolored transverse arrays in a quadratic nonlinear medium under the pump of two crossly overlapped femtosecond beams. The 2D reproducible patterns are caused by cascaded noncollinear quadratic nonlinear couplings between the input pulses and quadratic spatial solitons originated from spatial breakup of one of the input beams with spatial ellipticity. A seed supercontinuum pulse is then diffracted and amplified with phase preservation, resulting in the formation of up-converted multicolor 2D transverse arrays. By seeding with weak second harmonic pulses, the 2D multicolored transverse patterns are suppressed due to weak beam control of the induced quadratic spatial solitons.

Optical selectivity in optically dense media driven by optimized Gaussian-type ultrashort pulse pairs.

We theoretically demonstrate that selective resonant excitation can be achieved in a dense collection of V-type three-level atoms by optimizing the pulse delay and peak intensity ratio of an applied phase-tailored ultrashort pulse pair. Near-dipole-dipole interaction plays an important role in the quantum control of selective excitations since it brings about an intrinsic frequency shift in the atomic resonance, which builds up various excitation pathways. As a consequence, we can control the quantum interference between various pathways by shaping the excitation pulse pair to steer the atomic excitation selectively toward a desired quantum state.

Colored conical emission by means of second harmonic generation in a quadratically nonlinear medium.

Colored conical emission was observed experimentally in a thick beta-barium borate crystal as a result of spatiotemporal modulational instability. In the presence of both dispersion and diffraction, colored conical emission showed specific features that were characteristic of the nonlinear dynamics of the strongly coupled fundamental and harmonic fields. Experimental observation directly demonstrated that beam angular spectra were substantially modified as a result of exponential growth of perturbations by means of parametric wave mixing. Seeded amplification of colored conical emission was demonstrated to support ultrabroadband up-conversion.

Raman properties of chlorophyll d, the major pigment of Acaryochloris marina: studies using both Raman spectroscopy and density functional theory.

The Raman spectroscopy of purified chlorophyll (Chl) d extracted from Acaryochloris marina has been measured over the wide region of 250-3200 cm(-1) at 77 K following excitation of its Soret band at 488 nm and analyzed with the aid of hybrid density-functional vibrational analyses. A Raman peak specific to Chl d, which arises from the formyl group 3(1) C=O stretching, was clearly observed at 1659 cm(-1) with medium intensity. Peaks due to other C=O stretching vibrations of the 13(1) keto-, 13(3) ester- and 17(3) groups were also observed. Four very strong peaks were observed in the range of 1000-1600 cm(-1), assigned to the CC stretching and mixtures of the CH3 bend and CN stretching. CCC and NCC bending contribute to medium intensity peaks at 986 and 915 cm(-1). Out-of-plane CH bending at Chl d methine sites 10, 5 and 20 contribute to observed peaks at 885, 864 and 853 cm(-1), respectively. A few modes involving the MgN stretching and MgNC bending motions were observed in the very low frequency range. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been used to make assignments on the observed Raman spectrum and the DFT results have been found to be in good agreement with the experimental results.

Broadband saturable absorber with cobalt-doped tellurite glasses.

A robust solid-state saturable absorber was developed with cobalt-ion-doped tellurite glasses that has a broad saturable-absorption band in the near-infrared. A nonlinear optical absorber was measured by the Z-scan technique. Numerically fitting the Z-scan experimental data yields excited-state absorption cross sections at a 1064-nm laser wavelength of sigma(es) = 1.45 x 10(-20) and sigma(es) = 1.15 x 10(-20) cm2 for 1.0- and 2.5-at. % Co2+-doped glasses, respectively.

Subfemtosecond pulse generation and multiplicative increase of pulse spacing in high-order stimulated Raman scattering.

We demonstrate a technique for multiplicatively increasing the pulse spacing of subfemtosecond pulse trains generated by high-order stimulated Raman scattering, which uses pairs of off-resonant two-photon excitation of a molecular Raman mode to establish strong molecular modulation in the medium. Every laser pair has two single-mode laser beams tuned slightly off two-photon resonance, and the laser pairs have their corresponding carrier frequencies shifted from each other by one half, one third, or one fourth of the selected molecular Raman mode frequency. Theoretical analyses and calculations based on the fundamental vibrational transition of solid hydrogen show that the pulse spacing of the subfemtosecond pulse trains thus generated can readily be doubled, tripled, or even quadrupled.

Raman spectroscopy of chlorophyll d from Acaryochloris marina.

The Raman spectroscopy of chlorophyll (Chl) d isolated from Acaryochloris marina has been measured in the range of 250-3200 cm(-1) at 77 K following excitation of its B(x) band at 488 nm. A peak at 1659 cm(-1) of medium intensity arising from Cz=O stretching vibration in the formyl group 3(1) specific to Chl d was observed clearly. Peaks due to other Cz=O stretching vibrations of the 13(1) keto-, 13(3) ester- and 17(3) groups have also been observed with much weaker intensities. Intense Raman peaks in the range of 1000-1800 cm(-1) are reported and homologous comparison with corresponding Raman shifts of Chl a, Chl b and BChl a are presented.
