N3-sensitized TiO2 films: in situ proton exchange toward open-circuit photovoltage enhancement.

Protons of N3, cis-bis(thiocyanato)bis(2,2'-bipyridyl-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid)ruthenium(II), were in situ exchanged on N3-loaded TiO2 films with alkali-metal, tetrabutylammonium, and guanidinium cations. This simple strategy improved the open-circuit photovoltage (V(oc)) significantly, resulting in enhancement of the power conversion efficiency by 10-25%. Electrochemical impedance spectra revealed that the in situ proton exchange of the N3-loaded film suppressed charge recombination between injected electrons and I(3-) ions in the electrolyte, which, together with the negative shift of the conduction band edge for TiO2, may account for the remarkably increased V(oc) upon proton exchange of N3.

Photoelectrochemical decomposition of water into H2 and O2 on porous BiVO4 thin-film electrodes under visible light and significant effect of Ag ion treatment.

The photoelectrochemical properties of porous BiVO4 thin-film electrodes on conducting glass for H2 production from water under visible light were investigated. BiVO4 films were prepared by the metal-organic decomposition method, and particles were 90-150 nm in diameter. Under visible-light irradiation, H2 and O2 evolved in a stoichiometric ratio (H2/O2 = 2) from an aqueous solution of Na2SO4 with an external bias. The photocurrent increased with addition of methanol. The band structure of BiVO4 was investigated by open-circuit potential, flat-band potential, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and calculations based on density functional theory. The top of the valence-band potential of BiVO4 was shifted negatively compared to the potentials of the conventional oxide semiconductors without Bi. We surmise that hybridization between the O-2p and Bi-6s orbitals might contribute to the negative shift of the BiVO4 valence band. Treatment with an aqueous solution of AgNO3 improved the photocurrent of the BiVO4 electrode significantly. The maximum incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency at 420 nm was 44%. This value was the highest among mixed-oxide semiconductor electrodes under visible light irradiation. AgNO3 treatment also improved the stability of the photocurrent. The Ag+ ion in/on the BiVO4 catalyzed the intrinsic photogeneration of oxygen with the holes.

Photocatalytic activity of R3MO7 and R2Ti2O7 (R=Y, Gd, La; M=Nb, Ta) for water splitting into H2 and O2.

The photocatalytic activities of R3MO7 and R2Ti2O7 (R=Y, Gd, La; M=Nb, Ta) strongly depended on the crystal structure. Overall, photocatalytic water splitting into H2 and O2 proceeded over La3TaO7 and La3NbO7, which have an orthorhombic weberite structure, Y2Ti2O7 and Gd2Ti2O7, which have a cubic pyrochlore structure, and La2Ti2O7, which has a monoclinic perovskite structure. All of these materials are composed of a network of corner-shared octahedral units of metal cations (TaO6, NbO6, or TiO6); materials without such a network were inactive. The octahedral network certainly increased the mobility of electrons and holes, thereby enhancing photocatalytic activity.

Efficient eosin y dye-sensitized solar cell containing Br-/Br3- electrolyte.

We found that Br-/Br3- is more suitable than an I-/I3- couple in dye-sensitized solar cells in terms of higher open-circuit photovoltage (Voc) production and higher overall energy conversion efficiency (eta) if the dye sensitizer has a more positive potential than that of Br-/Br3-. Under simulated AM1.5 one sun, an eosin Y dye-sensitized solar cell containing 0.4 M LiBr + 0.04 M Br2 electrolyte in acetonitrile yielded a short-circuit photocurrent (Jsc) of 4.63 mA cm(-2), Voc of 0.813 V, and fill factor (FF) of 0.693, corresponding to 2.61% of eta. Under the same conditions except for the electrolyte 0.4 M LiI + 0.04 M I2 in acetonitrile instead, the device produced 1.67% of eta (Jsc = 5.15 mA cm(-2), Voc = 0.451 V, FF = 0.721). Replacement of I-/I3- with Br-/Br3- in eosin Y dye-sensitized solar cells yielded a significant increase in Voc offset by slight decreases in Jsc and FF, leading to an increase in eta by 56%. The significant gain in Voc was attributed to the enlarged energy level difference between the redox potential of the electrolyte and the Fermi level of TiO2 and the suppressed charge recombination as well. The rate for charge recombination between bromine and the injected electrons was determined to be first order in bromine.

Recyclable catalyst for conversion of carbon dioxide into formate attributable to an oxyanion on the catalyst ligand.

The catalyst recycling in the conversion of CO2 into formate using the iridium complex with 4,7-dihydroxy-1,10-phenanthroline as a catalyst precursor is described. The catalyst precursor was dissolved in an aqueous KOH solution under CO2 pressure prior to the reaction, but was precipitated spontaneously at the end of the reaction. The acidification by the generation of formate caused the transformation from the water-soluble deprotonated form into the water-insoluble protonated form. When the reaction was carried out at 60 degrees C for 20 h using 0.1 M KOH solution under 6 MPa of H2:CO2 (1:1), the catalyst precursor was precipitated spontaneously and the added KOH was consumed completely. The catalyst was recovered by filtration, and the product was obtained by the evaporation of the filtrate. Iridium leaching into the filtrate was found to be 0.11 ppm (<2% of the loaded Ir). The recovered catalyst retained high catalytic activity for four cycles. Consequently, the CO2 conversion using the complex is an environmentally benign process, whose significant features are as follows: (i) catalyst recycling by self-precipitation/filtration, (ii) waste-free process, (iii) the easy isolation of the product, (iv) high efficiency under relatively mild conditions, and (v) aqueous catalysis without the use of organic materials. Furthermore, we have demonstrated the significant roles of the oxyanion generated from the acidic phenolic hydroxyl on the catalyst ligand, which are the catalyst recovery by acid-base equilibrium, as well as the water-solubility by its polarity and the catalyst activation by its electron-donating ability.

Development of new photocatalytic water splitting into H2 and O2 using two different semiconductor photocatalysts and a shuttle redox mediator IO3-/I-.

A new type of photocatalytic reaction that splits water into H2 and O2 was designed using a two-step photoexcitation system composed of an iodate/iodide (IO3-/I-) shuttle redox mediator and two different photocatalysts, one for H2 evolution and the other for O2 evolution. Photocatalytic oxidation of water to O2 and reduction of IO3- to I- selectively proceeded with good efficiencies over TiO2-rutile and Pt-WO3 photocatalysts under UV and visible light irradiations, respectively. The O2 evolution selectively proceeded even in the presence of a considerable amount of I- in the solutions, although the oxidation of water is thermodynamically less favorable than oxidation of I-. Both the adsorption property of IO3- anions and the oxidation property of the photocatalysts are doubtless responsible for the selective oxidation of water. On the other hand, photocatalytic reduction of water to H2 and oxidation of I- to IO3- proceeded over Pt-TiO2-anatase and Pt-SrTiO3:Cr/Ta (codoped with Cr and Ta) photocatalysts under UV and visible light, respectively. The combination of two different photocatalysts results in a stoichiometric evolution of H2 and O2 via the redox cycle of IO3- and I-. The photocatalytic water splitting under visible light irradiation (lambda > 420 nm) was demonstrated by using the Pt-SrTiO3:Cr/Ta, Pt-WO3, and IO3-/I- shuttle redox mediator.

Oligothiophene-containing coumarin dyes for efficient dye-sensitized solar cells.

We have developed oligothiophene-containing coumarin dyes fully functionalized for dye-sensitized nanocrystalline TiO(2) solar cells (DSSCs). DSSCs based on the dyes gave good performance in terms of incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) in the range of 400-800 nm. A solar energy-to-electricity conversion efficiency (eta) of 7.4% was obtained with a DSSC based on 2-cyano-3-[5'-(1,1,6,6-tetramethyl-10-oxo-2,3,5,6-tetrahydro-1H,4H,10H-11-oxa-3a-aza-benzo[de]anthracen-9-yl)-[2,2']bithiophenyl-5-yl]acrylic acid (NKX-2677) under simulated AM 1.5G irradiation (100 mW cm(-2)) with a mask: short-circuit current density (J(sc)) = 13.5 mA cm(-2); open-circuit voltage (V(oc)) = 0.71 V; fill factor (FF) = 0.77. Transient absorption spectroscopy measurements indicated that electron injection from NKX-2677 to the conduction band of TiO(2) is very rapid (<100 fs), which is much faster than the emission lifetime of the dye (1.0 ns), giving a highly efficient electron injection yield of near unity.

Significant efficiency improvement of the black dye-sensitized solar cell through protonation of TiO2 films.

This paper describes the influence of acid pretreatment ofTiO2 mesoporous films prior to dye sensitization on the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells based on [(C4H9)4N]3[Ru(Htcterpy)(NCS)3] (tcterpy = 4,4',4"-tricarboxy- 2,2',2"-terpyridine), the so-called black dye. The HCl pretreatment caused an increase in overall efficiency by 8%, with a major contribution from photocurrent improvement. It is speculated, from the analysis of incident photon-to-electron conversion efficiency, UV-vis absorption spectra, redox properties of the dye and TiO2, and the impedance spectra of the dye-sensitized solar cells, that photocurrent enhancement is attributed to the increases in electron injection and/or charge collection efficiency besides the improvement of light harvesting efficiency upon HCl pretreatment. Open-circuit photovoltage (V(oc)) remained almost unchanged in the case of significant positive shift of flat band potential for TiO2 upon HCl pretreatment. The suppression of electron transfer from conduction band electrons to the I3- ions in the electrolyte upon HCl pretreatment, reflected by the increased resistance at the TiO2/dye/electrolyte interface and reduced dark current, resulted in a V(oc) gain, which compensated the V(oc) loss due to the positive shift of the flat band. Using the HCl pretreatment approach, 10.5% of overall efficiency with the black dye was obtained under illumination of simulated AM 1.5 solar light (100 mW cm(-2)) using an antireflection film on the cell surface.

Photophysical and (photo)electrochemical properties of a coumarin dye.

A new coumarin dye, cyano-{5,5-dimethyl-3-[2-(1,1,6,6-tetramethyl-10-oxo-2,3,5,6-tetrahydro-1H,4H,10H-11-oxa-3a-aza-benzo[de]anthracen-9-yl)vinyl]cyclohex-2-enylidene}-acetic acid (NKX-2753), was prepared and characterized with respect to photophysical and electrochemical properties. It was employed as a dye sensitizer in dye-sensitized solar cells and showed efficient photon-to-electron conversion properties. The photocurrent action spectrum exhibited a broad feature with a maximum incident photon-to-electron conversion efficiency (IPCE) of 84% at 540 nm, which is comparable to that for the famous red dye RuL2(NCS)2 (known as N3), where L stands for 2,2'-bipyridyl-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid. The sandwich-type solar cell with NKX-2753, under illumination of full sun (AM1.5, 100 mW cm(-2)), produced 16.1 mA cm(-2) of short-circuit photocurrent, 0.60 V of open-circuit photovoltage, and 0.69 of fill factor, corresponding to 6.7% of overall energy conversion efficiency using 0.1 M LiI, 0.05 M I2, 0.1 M guanidinium thiocyanate, and 0.6 M 1,2-dimethyl-3-n-propyl-imidazolium iodide in dry acetonitrile as redox electrolyte. In comparison with its analogue NKX-2586 (Langmuir 2004, 20, 4205), NKX-2753 with an extra side ring on the alkene chain produced much higher IPCE values at the same conditions. The side ring acted as a spacer to efficiently prevent dye aggregation when adsorbed on the TiO2 surface, resulting in significant improvements of short-circuit photocurrent, open-circuit photovoltage, and fill factor compared with NKX-2586 that aggregated on the TiO2 surface.

Theoretical study of quinolines-I(2) intermolecular interaction and implications on dye-sensitized solar cell performance.

The monomer and intermolecular charge-transfer complexes of 13 different quinoline derivatives with diiodine were studied using ab initio molecular orbital (MO) and density functional theory (DFT) methods. Calculations revealed that the sigma* orbital of iodine interacts with the nitrogen lone pair in the quinoline ring. The open-circuit photovoltage (V(oc)) values of an Ru(II) complex dye-sensitized nanocrystalline TiO(2) solar cell with an I(-)/I(3) (-) redox electrolyte in acetonitrile using quinoline additives were compared to the computational calculations on the intermolecular interaction between quinolines and I(2). The optimized geometries, frequency analyses, Mulliken population analyses, natural bond orbital (NBO) analyses, and interaction energies indicate that the V(oc) value of the solar cell is higher when quinoline complexes more favorably interact with I(2). Therefore, the interaction between the quinoline additives and iodine redox electrolyte is an important factor for controlling dye-sensitized solar cell performance.

Relationship between asynchronous myocardial contraction and left ventricular systolic and diastolic function--assessment using the ECG-gated polar map with 99mTc-methoxy-isobutyl isonitrile.

BACKGROUND: To quantitate the degree of 3-dimensional asynchronous myocardial contraction, an ECG-gated polar map method was developed with (99m)Tc-methoxy-isobutyl isonitrile, and used to investigate the relationship between asynchrony and left ventricular (LV) function. METHODS AND RESULTS: Twelve normal subjects and 38 patients with an old myocardial infarction were studied with ECG-gated single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). In each frame, a myocardial perfusion polar map was reconstructed and the peak contraction phase in each pixel was displayed (phase map). The degree of asynchronous contraction was assessed from the standard deviations of the peak contraction phase (SDP) on the phase map. Ejection fraction (EF), peak ejection rate (PER), 1/3EF, peak filling rate (PFR) and 1/3 filling fraction (1/3FF) were calculated by the quantitative gated SPECT software, and E/A from Doppler echocardiography. The SDP was compared with these parameters. Correlation coefficients and p values between the SDP and parameters of cardiac function were as follows: EF, r=-0.69 (p<0.001); PER, r=-0.54 (p<0.001); 1/3EF, r=-0.57 (p<0.001); PFR, r=-0.29 (p<0.05); 1/3FF, r=-0.63 (p<0.001); E/A, r=-0.11 (p=0.51). CONCLUSIONS: There was a negative correlation between the SDP and LV systolic and diastolic function, which confirmed the functional significance of asynchrony on cardiac function.

Incidence of acute myocardial infarction in Takashima, Shiga, Japan.

BACKGROUND: The incidence and mortality from ischemic heart disease (IHD) in Japan seem to be among the lowest of all the industrialized countries, but there are few reliable registers of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). METHODS AND RESULTS: To assess the incidence of AMI in Takashima County, Shiga, Japan, from 1988 to 1998 and compare the data with similar registers in the world, cases of AMI or sudden death presumed from myocardial ischemia were registered. The criteria of AMI were based on the WHO MONICA Projects. The medical records of all the hospitals inside as well as outside the county, the original death records in the health center, and the ambulance records in the county were investigated and 291 cases were registered (190 males, 101 females; average age (mean +/- SD), 69.5+/-12.2). The 28-day and 24-h case fatality was 38.1% and 33.0%, respectively. Age-adjusted annual incidence of AMI per 100,000 population aged between 25 and 74 years were 58.2 for men and 18.0 for women. The incidence of AMI showed a constant trend from 1988 to 1998. CONCLUSION: The results confirmed that Japan has the lowest incidence of AMI among the industrialized countries.

Panchromatic sensitization of nanocrystalline TiO2 with cis-Bis(4-carboxy-2-[2'-(4'-carboxypyridyl)]quinoline)bis(thiocyanato-N)ruthenium(II).

We compared the spectral (IR and Raman), electrochemical, and photoelectrochemical properties of nanocrystalline TiO(2) sensitized with the newly synthesized complex [NBu(4)](2)[cis-Ru(Hdcpq)(2)(NCS)(2)] (1; [NBu(4)](+) = tetrabutylammonium cation; H(2)dcpq = 4-carboxy-2-[2'-(4'-carboxypyridyl)]quinoline) with those of TiO(2) sensitized with [NBu(4)](2)[cis-Ru(Hdcbpy)(2)(NCS)(2)] (2; H(2)dcbpy = 4,4'-dicarboxy-2,2'-bipyridine) and [NBu(4)](2)[cis-Ru(Hdcbiq)(2)(NCS)(2)] (3; H(2)dcbiq = 4,4'-dicarboxy-2,2'-biquinoline). Complex 1 achieved efficient sensitization of nanocrystalline TiO(2) films over a wide visible and near-IR region, generating a large short-circuit photocurrent. The absorbed photon-to-current conversion efficiency decreased in the order 2 > 1 > 3 with the decrease in the free energy change (-Delta G(inj)) of the electron injection from the ruthenium complex to TiO(2). The open-circuit photovoltages (V(oc)'s) of dye-sensitized solar cells decreased in the order 2 > 1 > 3 with the increase in the dark current resulting from reverse electron transfer from TiO(2) to I(3)(-). The sensitizer-dependent V(oc) value can be interpreted as a result of reverse electron transfer through the sensitizing dye molecules.
