Wavelength-agile mid-infrared (5-10 microm) generation using a galvano-controlled KTiOPO4 optical parametric oscillator.

A wavelength-agile mid-infrared (IR) ZnGeP2 (ZGP) optical parametric oscillator (OPO) using a galvano-controlled double-crystal KTiOPO4 (KTP) OPO was demonstrated. The mid-IR wavelength was tuned by varying the KTP OPO pump wavelength while the ZGP crystal angle remained fixed. Rapid tuning of the KTP OPO was achieved by changing the crystal angle by using the galvano scanner. Our mid-IR source can jump to a different wavelength without scanning through the intermediate wavelengths while also permitting continuous-wavelength scanning. The mid-IR source can be tuned from approximately 5to10 microm at a phase-matching angle of 51 degrees , while the pump wavelength is controlled in the 1.95-2.2 microm range.

Output power enhancement of a palmtop terahertz-wave parametric generator.

Broadband terahertz (THz) waves were generated by optical parametric processes based on laser light scattering from the polariton mode of a nonlinear crystal. By using the parametric oscillation of a MgO-doped LiNbO3 crystal pumped by a nanosecond Q-switched Nd:YAG laser, we have realized a broadband, high-energy and compact THz-wave source. We report the development of a THz-wave parametric generator (TPG) using a small pump source with a short pulse width and a top-hat beam profile. These characteristics of the pump beam permit high-intensity pumping especially close to the output surface of the THz wave without thermal damage to the crystal surface. We also calculated the outcoupled THz wave for beams with two different intensity profiles: a top-hat beam (in this experiment) and a Gaussian beam (previously reported). The result shows the mechanism of the output energy and/or power enhancement.

Surface-emitted terahertz-wave difference-frequency generation in two-dimensional periodically poled lithium niobate.

We report on the demonstration of surface-emitted terahertz- (THz-) wave difference-frequency generation from two-dimensional (2D) periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN). The two orthogonal periodic structures individually compensate for both the phase mismatch of the launched lasers and the generated THz wave. Tunable 1.5-1.8 THz wave generation with a bandwidth of 10-GHz was obtained by use of two 2D PPLN crystals. We also confirmed that THz waves were simultaneously generated into two opposite directions, which suggests the possibility of higher THz-wave output power.

Powerful red-green-blue laser source pumped with a mode-locked thin disk laser.

We present a red-green-blue laser source with average powers of 8 W in the red, 23 W in the green, and 10.1 W in the blue. The entire pump power for the nonlinear conversion stages is provided by a single laser oscillator without any amplifier stages. Our system does not require any synchronized cavities, and all nonlinear crystals except one are critically phase matched at room temperature.

Spatial pattern separation of chemicals and frequency-independent components by terahertz spectroscopic imaging.

We separated the component spatial patterns of frequency-dependent absorption in chemicals and frequency-independent components such as plastic, paper, and measurement noise in terahertz (THz) spectroscopic images, using known spectral curves. Our measurement system, which uses a widely tunable coherent THz-wave parametric oscillator source, can image at a specific frequency in the range 1-2 THz. The component patterns of chemicals can easily be extracted by use of the frequency-independent components. This method could be successfully used for nondestructive inspection for the detection of illegal drugs and devices of bioterrorism concealed, e.g., inside mail and packages.

Nd:YAG-pumped periodically poled LiNbO3 optical parametric generator seeded with the narrowband output of a 532-nm pumped optical parametric generator.

We present a simple scheme to generate a continuously tunable pulsed narrow-bandwidth infrared wave. An Nd:YAG-pumped periodically poled lithium niobate optical parametric generator (OPG) is seeded with the output of another OPG pumped by the second harmonic (0.532 microm) of the Nd:YAG laser. A tunable idler wave from the 0.532-microm pumped OPG, operated away from the degenerate point, provides a narrow linewidth seed source for the 1.064-microm pumped broadband OPG. Seeding forces the second OPG to operate in a narrowband operation comparable with that of the seed source. Linewidth of the YAG-pumped OPG is 5-25 nm, in the tuning range of 1.61-1.83 microm (signal), narrowed to 1.48-1.05 nm. Methods of further reduction of linewidth also have been discussed.
