pH-controlled, polymer-mediated assembly of polymer micelle nanoparticles.

We describe pH-controlled, polymer-mediated assembly of polymer micelles in aqueous media based on reversible complexation between the micelles of pyrene-labeled poly(epsilon-caprolactone)-b-poly(carboxylic acid) copolymers and proton-accepting water-soluble polymers such as poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) (PEtOz), and poly(1-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP). The key factor determining assembly phenomena was identified as the modulation of hydrogen-bonding interaction between ionizable anionic micellar shells and the proton-accepting polymers by the pH control. As pH decreased from 7.4 to 2.0, the mixture of the polymer micelles and polymers underwent assembly and formed solid hybrids at specific pH values. The micelles assembled in the hybrid could be reversibly dispersed as micelles above specific pH ranges. The assembly/disassembly behavior as well as phase transitions of the micelle/proton-accepting polymer could be precisely controlled by adjusting pH. This assembling behavior depended on the rationally designed parameters such as the chemical structure and length of micellar shell-forming poly(carboxylic acid)s and the class of proton-accepting polymers.

Surface modification of hydroxyapatite nanocrystals by grafting polymers containing phosphonic acid groups.

A novel approach for the surface modification of hydroxyapatite (HAp) nanocrystals is described by grafting polymerization of vinyl phosphonic acid (VPA) using a redox initiating system in an aqueous media. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and XRD analyses confirmed the modification reaction on HAp surfaces. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP MS) showed that the Ca/P molar ratio decreased from 1.67 to 1.36 with increasing the feed VPA amount. Zeta potentials of unmodified HAp and modified HAp in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) solutions (pH 7.4, ionic strength = 10 mM) were negative and decreased with increasing the amount of grafted PVPA. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements and time-dependent phase monitoring indicated that the colloidal stability of modified HAp over unmodified HAp in water dramatically increased and tended to exist as single nanocrystals without aggregation.

Subjective memory complaints and clinical characteristics in elderly Koreans: a questionnaire survey.

OBJECTIVES: The overall objectives of the Ajou-Bundang Study for the Elderly (AB study) were to describe the current geriatric diseases and health behaviors, and to improve the visiting health service in South Korea. The particular objectives of the current study were to describe the AB study and to investigate the associations between subjective memory complaints (SMCs) and objective cognitive function, to assess the clinical characteristics of SMCs, and to measure possible differences between elderly people with and without cognitive dysfunction. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of a sample of people from the AB study was constructed to study the association between SMCs and demographic variables. SMCs, cognitive function, and demographic characteristics were ascertained. A total of 9,477 subjects aged 65 years or over were recruited from the residents of Bundang, Korea. RESULTS: SMCs were reported by 57.3% of the study participants. SMCs were correlated with advanced age and with being female. Further analyses of cognitive functions revealed that associated factor profiles differed between the participants with and without cognitive dysfunction. CONCLUSIONS: These results show that age is associated with SMCs, irrespective of the level of cognitive function. Longitudinal SMC studies should be undertaken to investigate potentially associated clinical parameters.

Phosphorous retention capacity of filter media for estimating the longevity of constructed wetland.

The filter medium could be selected and the longevity of the filter medium by the phosphorus saturation could be predicted in the constructed wetland system, accordingly proposing the scheme to remove the phosphorus for a long period. The phosphorus adsorption capacities of various filter media were investigated in relation to the size and types of filter media to screen the optimal condition. The objective of this study was to evaluate the constructed wetland longevity by improving P adsorption capacity. The maximum P adsorption capacities of filter media A (4--10 mm), B (2--4 mm), and C (0.1--2 mm) were 7.7, 11.6, and 22.5 mg/kg, respectively, showing that they increased as the filter media size decreased. Among the experimental media, the optimal filter media size was 0.1--2 mm. When Ca, Mg, Al and Fe were added to the filter medium C, which is the optimal filter medium, the addition of Ca improved mostly the P adsorption capacity. In the alternative proposal to use these facts, the oyster shell was added to the filter medium and the P adsorption capacity was examined: adding 2% oyster shell increased the P adsorption capacity from 23 to 36 mg/kg. In the column where the oyster shell was mixed, when the oyster shell content was 5%, 10%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100% in the filter medium C, the respective saturation times of the P adsorption were about 6, 9, 17, 30, 43, 56, and 70 days. When the oyster shell content was 0%, 5%, 10%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100% after 1 month in the column, the P adsorption amount was about 180, 600, 1560, 4280, 6157, 7089, 7519, and 7925 mg/kg, respectively. The increment of the P adsorption amount was small if the oyster shell content was 60% or more, because the filter medium with more than 60% oyster shell content did not approach the saturation time by the P adsorption yet. The P adsorption amount for 60%, 80%, and 100% could be predicted as about 9702, 12,879, and 16,056 mg/kg, respectively. The largest amount of extracted P in the filter media with oyster shell after 30 days of P solution application was bound to Ca, followed by water soluble-P, Al--P, and Fe--P. Therefore, it was concluded that the adsorption amount of the phosphorus could be increased by adding the oyster shell to the filter medium. Also, it was concluded that adding the oyster shell to the filter medium in the constructed wetland was the scheme to extend the longevity of the constructed wetland by the phosphorus saturation, and using the oyster shell would be useful in aspect of economical efficiency and easiness. Especially, it would be the alternative proposal to reduce the environmental pollution in aspect of recycling wastes.

The PHC-cog: a brief cognitive function screening test for the elderly.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive dysfunctions such as dementia have emerged as a leading public health problem among the elderly. Its early detection is important for the management of patients, and for the educational support of other family members. Although cognitive dysfunction screening tests are available, they have not been widely utilized in community or primary care settings. AIM: To validate the PHC-cog (Public Health Center Cognitive Dysfunction Test) and to assess it as a simple and brief method for massive screening of cognitive dysfunctions in the primary care setting. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study comprised 137 community-dwelling patients with dementia and 134 age, sex, and education-matched controls. The PHC-cog was made combining patients' and informants' questionnaires to improve performance. The PHC-cog patient's section briefly assessed the patient's cognition. RESULTS: The PHC-cog Patient's Section had a sensitivity and specificity of 0.75 and 0.92, respectively. The PHC-cog Informants' Section had a sensitivity and specificity of 0.79 and 0.83, respectively. The total method of administering the PHC-cog had a sensitivity and specificity of 0.96 and 0.82, and the two-stage method had a sensitivity and specificity of 0.92 and 0.76, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The PHC-cog test is a simple, accurate and reliable, performance-based tool in the screening for cognitive dysfunction. The PHC-cog test is quick, and easy-to-use, and will hopefully become widely used in the cognitive screening of the aging population in the primary public medical institutions of Korea.

The characteristics of sit-to-stand transfer in young children with spastic cerebral palsy based on kinematic and kinetic data.

The aim of this study is to investigate the kinetic and kinematic characteristics of sit-to-stand transfer in children with spastic cerebral palsy (CP) in comparison with normal children. Fifteen spastic diplegic children, 12 spastic hemiplegic children and 21 normally developed children participated in this study. The sit-to-stand task was evaluated using a Motion analyzer (Vicon 370 MA with six infrared cameras). The consistent pattern of sit-to-stand transfer and six transitional points were identified in normal children. The motion analysis of sit-to-stand in children with CP showed slowness in the task, increased anterior pelvic tilting, and hip flexion during the task. An early abrupt knee extension was noted in diplegic children, as compared with normal controls. Decreased maximal knee extensor moment and decreased extensor power generation of the hip and knee joints were the major kinetic characteristics of the involved limbs of both diplegic and hemiplegic CP.
