[Outline of the effects of chronic prostatitis on male fertility].

Chronic prostatitis (CP) is common in male infertility, and only a few patients present with minimal clinical symptoms. Although CP can exert negative impacts on male fertility through several pathways, controversial view existed in its effects on the quantity and quality of semen, and more researchers tend to consider CP have little influence in male infertility. Author advocates to adjust the attitude to the relationship between CP and male fertility both in doctors and patients, emphasize the unique usage of therapeutic drugs and the significance of synthetic treatment with anti-oxidation, anti-inflammation and operation. Assisted reproductive technique can be a choice for the patients failed in regular treatment.

[Efficacy and safety of vardenafil in the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men with hypertension].

The prevalence of erectile dysfunction (ED) is higher in hypertension patients than in non-hypertension men. Because doctors worry about the severe adverse events of drug combination, they tend to be reluctant to prescribe ED medicines for patients. Vardenafil, as a novel and highly selective phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitor, has been proved by many clinical trials to be quite safe for the cardiovascular system. A recent large-scale clinical trial showed that vardenafil could improve erectile function in ED men with hypertension, with sure safety and no significant clinical changes in the index of hypertension or heart rate.

Localization and potential function of androgen receptor in rat salivary gland.

AIM: To investigate the localization and quantity of androgen receptor (AR) in the salivary glands of rats with further analysis on the effect of castration. METHODS: Sixty male Wistar rats, aged 30-60 days, were randomly divided into three groups (castrated, sham-operated and normal controls) with 20 rats in each group. The rats in the castrated group were castrated and the submaxillary glands were removed after 1 week. The salivary glands of the rats in the sham-operated and the normal control groups were also removed. Parts of the salivary glands were fixed for immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization assays. Other parts were used for Western blot. RESULTS: AR immunoreactivity in the three groups was localized in the glandular epithelial cells of the serous acinus and the glandular duct of the salivary gland, mainly in the nuclei. AR mRNA hybridization signals in the salivary glands of the castrated group were mainly distributed in the epithelial cells of the convoluted and secretary ducts; AR mRNA in the sham-operated and the normal control groups were found in the epithelial cells of the convoluted, the secretary and the excretory ducts. The quantity of AR in the salivary glands was decreased significantly in the castrated rats compared with the sham-operated and the normal controls. Moreover, epidermal growth factor (EGF) secreted by the salivary glands was also decreased in the castrated rats. CONCLUSION: Castration appears to affect the production of AR in the salivary gland and the distribution of the AR mRNA and could further affect the function of the salivary gland. The changes of AR and the distribution of AR mRNA may play an important role in the interactions between the testes and the salivary gland.

[Partial androgen deficiency in the aging male apt to be misdiagnosed as depression and dementia: a typical case report].

A series of clinical symptoms associated with partial androgen deficiency in middle-aged and old males are apt to be confused with those of depression and dementia, and therefore result in misdiagnosis and mistreatment. This article reports a case of partial androgen deficiency in the aging male (PADAM) repeatedly misdiagnosed as depression and dementia, which demands sufficient clinical attention. The main reasons for the misdiagnosis and mistreatment lie in unfamiliarity with PADAM, lack of specific symptoms of the condition, omission of special examinations and hormone level analysis.

[The challenge of male reproductive health].

Recently, research on male reproductive ability brings along the concern on male reproductive health. At present time, the situation of reproductive health was not optimistic and many problems need to be solved. In this article, many important topics were included, such as the changing and the possible reasons of male reproductive health; much concern was needed for babies, children, and male juvenile; increasing tendency of the infection rates of male urogenital system; research on male infertility needed to be explored deeply; there was no satisfactory methods for male contraception; the diagnosis and treatment of male erectile dysfunction were not sufficient for the need; research on andropause was at the primary stage; life regime of men needed to be adjusted. Concerning for male reproductive health is the responsibility of both medical workers and whole society.

[A tentative research of testosterone supplement therapy on male senile dementia].

OBJECTIVES: To understand the hormone levels in male senile dementia patients and the effects of testosterone supplement theraphy (TST) on male senile dementia. METHODS: The general health condition, mental health condition, hormone levels, and some other aspects were evaluated in 9 patients with male senile dementia without significant contradiction for TST. 9 patients were treated with oral testosterone undecanoate 120 mg per day for six weeks, and relative changes were observed, detected and recorded. RESULTS: In 9 cases of male senile dementia, the average score was 5.33 in mini-mental state examination (MMSE), 14.56 in Hamilton depression scale (HAMD), 5.0 in geriatric depression scale (GDS), 32.56 in partial androgen deficiency of the aging male (PADAM) measuring form. The volume of testis was small (8.33 ml on average). After 1 week of having finished TST, the levels of serum testosterone (T) dropped significantly (dropped from average 2.88 ng/ml to 2.47 ng/ml, P < 0.05) in 9 patients with TST. General evaluation with clinician's global impression(CGI) for 9 patients showed 2 cases fail and 7 cases with progress (3 of them progress significantly). Average score dropped in HAMD form (10.67) and PADAM form (28.11). Physical strength and psychological status improved significantly, but vasomotor symptoms and sexual function failed response to the treatment. CONCLUSIONS: The levels of androgen is low, and the symptoms of androgen deficiency are readily seen in male senile dementia. TST can improve life quality of most patients to some extent.

[Investigation of chronic prostatitis and altered bowel habits].

OBJECTIVES: To explore the incidence, causes, and significance of altered bowel habits in chronic prostatitis. METHODS: Investigating the incidence of altered bowel habits in chronic prostatitis, analyzing some possible causes to induce the symptom, such as course of disease, vegetative nerve functional disturbance, inflammation in expressed prostatic secretions, and digital rectal examination. Following up the improvement of altered bowel habits after effective treatment of chronic prostatitis. RESULTS: The incidence of altered bowel habits was 31.40% in 379 chronic prostatitis patients. The detected congestion and swelling of prostate was closed related to altered bowel habits in chronic prostatitis. The incidence of improvement of altered bowel habits after effective treatment of chronic prostatitis reached to 78.79%. CONCLUSIONS: Congestion and swelling of prostate might be the main causes for altered bowel habits in chronic prostatitis. Altered bowel habits should be considered as a common symptom and cure standard for chronic prostatitis.

[Investigation of reproductive organs of male children and juvenile of the Meng and the Han nationality in Chifeng area].

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the development and the health of reproductive organs of male children and juvenile between the Meng and the Han nationality in the Meng nationality area. METHODS: Male juvenile(4-18 years old) of the Meng nationality (n = 2,315) and the Han nationality (n = 2,832) were divided into four age groups. Height, weight, length and perimeter of penis, volume of left and right testis and reproductive organs illness were examined. RESULTS: In 13-18 years group, the developmental speed of reproductive organs was faster in Mongolia male juvenile than that in the Han nationality (P < 0.02). After 13 years old, the developmental speed of reproductive organs of male living in town is faster than that in the country (P < 0.05). Illness of male reproductive organs was common such as hernia, varicocle etc. CONCLUSIONS: There was difference of developmental status and the prevalence rate of reproductive organs of male children and juvenile between the Meng and the Han nationality.

[Current opinion in vasculogenic erectile dysfunction].

Diagnosis of vasculogenic erectile dysfunction (ED), which can not based on single method, is the key for the successive surgical treatment. Revascularization is a safe, effective method to treat arteriogenic ED. The key for successive treatment is to select the most suitable patients and to avoid any risk factors for the surgical candidates, especially for those revascularization as the only therapeutic method. The high failure rate in surgery of ED is due to venous leakage which has led to these techniques being abandoned by almost all urologist. Newly appeared methods with little or no damage are welcome by the patients with vasculogenic ED, and the better results can be achieved by the combination of general treatment.
