Multi-channel linear descriptors for event-related EEG collected in brain computer interface.

By three multi-channel linear descriptors, i.e. spatial complexity (omega), field power (sigma) and frequency of field changes (phi), event-related EEG data within 8-30 Hz were investigated during imagination of left or right hand movement. Studies on the event-related EEG data indicate that a two-channel version of omega, sigma and phi could reflect the antagonistic ERD/ERS patterns over contralateral and ipsilateral areas and also characterize different phases of the changing brain states in the event-related paradigm. Based on the selective two-channel linear descriptors, the left and right hand motor imagery tasks are classified to obtain satisfactory results, which testify the validity of the three linear descriptors omega, sigma and phi for characterizing event-related EEG. The preliminary results show that omega, sigma together with phi have good separability for left and right hand motor imagery tasks, which could be considered for classification of two classes of EEG patterns in the application of brain computer interfaces.

[Reductive dechlorination of chlorinated hydrocarbons in water by Ag/Fe catalytic reduction system].

Dechlorination of many kinds of chlorinated hydrocarbons including trichloromethane (CF), tetrachloromethane (CT), 1, 1,1-trichloroethane (1, 1, 1-TCA), 1, 1, 2, 2-tetrachloroethane (1, 1, 2, 2-TeCA), hexachloroethane (HCA), trichloroethylene (TCE), perchloroethylene (PCE) in water by Fe and Ag/Fe were investigated. Results show that the existence of Ag on Fe can enhance the dechlorination rate of chlorinated hydrocarbons. When the surface area concentration of iron is 150 m2 x L(-1), the dechlorination rate constant of CF, CT, 1, 1, 1-TCA, 1, 1, 2, 2-TeCA, HCA are 0.084 h(-1), 2.358 h(-1), 0.417 h(-1), 0.215 h(-1), 1.098 h(-1) by single Fe0, in this condition, no dechlorination of TCE and PCE during 10h, while the dechlorination rate constant of CF, CT, 1, 1, 1-TCA, 1, 1, 2, 2-TeCA, HCA, TCE, PCE are up to 1.850 h(-1), 9.504 h(-1), 1.624 h(-1), 1.778 h(-1), 2.842 h(-1), 0.463 h(-1), 1.251 h(-1) by Ag/Fe. The dechlorination rate constant of CF can increase by the factor of 20. The reaction pathways of chlorinated hydrocarbons with Fe and Ag/Fe were mainly including hydrogenolysis, reductive elimination and dehydrochlorination. The hydrogenolysis is the main reaction pathway for CF, TCE and PCE. The dechlorination pathway of 1, 1, 1-TCA are both hydrogenolysis and dehydrochlorination. Reductive beta elimination to form DCE is the dominant reaction pathway of 1, 1, 2, 2-TeCA, and HCA is via reductive beta elimination to form PCE firstly, then via hydrogenolysis to DCE.

[Percutaneous lung cancer cryotherapy guided by computer tomography].

OBJECTIVE: To document the feasibility, safety and efficacy of percutaneous lung cancer cryotherapy (PLC) guided by Computer Tomography (CT). METHODS: Two hundred and thirty seven patients with lung cancer underwent CT-guided PLC from August, 2001 to April, 2003. CT-visualized immediate ice formation beyond tumor margins was compared to tumor size and location. PLC feasibility and safety were evaluated. CT scan, lung tissue biopsy and survival rate were observed at different stages postcryoablation. RESULTS: All the patients underwent PLC using local anesthesia with minimal or no sedation. Iceball formation was well seen as negative Hounsfield units within soft tissue masses. Tumor size and location were independent determinants of ice coverage which was 97% (n = 124) for masses < 4 cm in diameter, and 80% (n = 183) for masses > 4 cm in diameter (P < 0.01). Only 59 patients had transient mild hypertension, and no death occurred during cryotherapy. Most of the slight side-effects were self-limited. No major bleeding or bronchial sequelae were identified. CT scan showed that necrotic cavitation larger than the original mass developed in 78% of the cases within one week, and mostly resolved by 6 months (4%). Partial resolution + complete resolution was noted by 1 - 6 months, which demonstrated reduced or stable tumor size. Necrotic coagulation could be found within 1 month and fibrin scarring 3 months postcryoablation. The survival rate in 18 months was 86% for patients at an early stage of lung cancer, and 21% for patients at stage III, while the one year survival rate for patients at stage IV was 9%. CONCLUSION: CT-guided PLC, with minimal procedure associated morbidity or sequelae, is a promising treatment for lung neoplasm of any stage in nearly any location.
