[cDNA microarray-based study of gene expression profile changes in human esophageal squamous cell carcinoma].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the differentially expressed genes between human esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and normal esophageal mucosa and explore an effective method with high throughput for screening the molecular markers closely correlated with the development, invasion and metastasis of ESCC. METHODS: With cDNA microarray and laser capture microdissection, T7-based amplification were used to detect the mRNA from both the primary carcinoma and the corresponding esophageal epithelium in 15 ESCC cases, and the results were analyzed by bioinformatics methods. RESULTS: Among the 886 target genes, 110 (12.42%) genes were differentially expressed commonly at least twice in all the 15 samples, including 56 (6.32%) up-regulated by at least 2 folds and 54 (6.09%) down-regulated by at least 0.5 folds. CONCLUSION: Many ESCC-associated genes were screened by the high-throughput gene chip method, and functional study of these genes may help to identify the key genes or pathways involved in the pathogenesis and development of ESCC.

[On clinical application and assessment of Menopause-Specific Quality of Life (Chinese Version)].

OBJECTIVE: To introduce Menopause-Specific Quality of Life (MENQOL) into China, and to evaluate the quality of its Chinese Version. METHODS: MENQOL was translated into Chinese language and the reverse translation was done by several specialists. After retest study on 30 cases, validity, reliability and responsiveness were implemented in 409 cases with menopause syndrome in the multicenter study. RESULTS: 7 components were extracted in factor analysis, and the total cumulative contribution was 59.476%. By correlation analysis, 7 components were divided into four domains: vasomotor, psychosocial, physical and sexual items, same as in the English Version. The test-retest reliability of four domains were 0.806, 0.804, 0.941, 0.940 respectively. Cronbach alpha of four domains were 0.7258, 0.8234, 0.8475, 0.8641 respectively. There had been significant changes after treatment noticed. CONCLUSION: The measurement properties of MENQOL-Chinese Version including effectueness, reliability were met with satisfaction and seemed to be adaptable to Chinese menopause women.

[Repair of facial skin defect with a skin flap of SMAS pedicle].

OBJECTIVE: To report a method of repair facial skin defects with a skin flap of SMAS pedicle. METHODS: According to the size of defect of skin, design a skin flap with SMAS pedicle for repair of defect. RESULTS: The method has been successfully applied for skin defects of eyelid and lip in 14 cases with satisfied results. The area of the largest flap was 5 cm x 3 cm. CONCLUSION: Repairing facial defects such as eyelid skin defect or lip skin defect with skin flap of SMAS pedicle is a very good method. The flap has a good blood supporting and satisfactory color and flexibility.

[Vertical mammaplasty using the skin wrinkling suture techniques].

OBJECTIVE: To reduce the incision scar produced by reduction mammaplasty. METHODS: The periareola incision and the vertical incision below the areola were made when performing breast reduction. The incision in the submammary fold was avoided. The breast was suspended and moulded. The redundant skin and the long skin incision below the areola were sutured utilizing the skin wrinkling suture techniques. The wrinkling skin and incision became flat gradually due to the elasticity of the tissue itself. RESULTS: 13 cases have been treated with the techniques mentioned above. All incisions healed primarily and there were no complications such as hematoma, infection and necrosis of skin or areola. Of them, 3 patients with very large and ptotic breasts needed small corrective operations to excise the redundant skin that still existed 6 months postoperatively. The shape of the breasts and the vertical incision scars of the other patients were satisfactory. CONCLUSIONS: The vertical mammaplasty using the skin wrinkling suture techniques can be used in breast reduction of various sizes, owing to the advantages of consistent, good and stable result, simplicity to perform and grasp and no scar in the submammary fold.

[Anatomic study of perforator neurovascular bundles of the deep inferior epigastric perforator flap].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the anatomic characteristics of the perforator neurovascular bundles in the anterior abdominal wall for the anatomical basis of the sensate deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap. METHODS: Abdominal wall dissection was performed on 9 embalmed female cadavers (18 sides). RESULTS: Most of the deep inferior epigastric perforators emerged at the anterior sheath of the rectus. There were averaged 17.5 perforators on each side, with the diameter equal to or larger than 0.5 mm in 7.8 perforators. The number of skin perforators was the greatest in the supero-medial area. 56.2 percent of vascular perforators traveled with the sensory branches while 80.9 percent of larger perforators (> or = 0.5 mm in diameter) run with the sensory branches. CONCLUSIONS: The lateral perforator neurovascular bundle was the first choice in the design of the sensate DIEP flap.

[Rotavirus surveillance data from Kunming Children's Hospital, 1998 - 2001].

OBJECTIVE: To study the epidemiological status on rotavirus diarrhea in Kunming to improve the rotavirus vaccine immunization program. METHODS: A hospital-based sentinel surveillance program for rotavirus was set up among children less than 5 years old with acute diarrhea in Kunming Children's Hospital. Clinical information and fecal specimens were collected and rotavirus were detected by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) and/or enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Positive specimens were further serotyped or genotyped by ELISA and/or RT-PCR. RESULTS: During the three years of surveillance, 466 specimens were collected. Rotavirus were detected on 246 (52.8%) specimens. 97% of the rotavirus diarrhea cases occurred among children less than 2 years old. There was a peak of admissions for rotavirus diarrhea cases between October and December which accounted for 48% of all the rotavirus hospitalizations each year. Among 204 specimens with G serotyping, the predominant strain was serotype G1 (47.5%) followed by G2 (17.6%), G3 (15.7%), G9 (4.9%) and G4 (1.0%). Mixed infection (2.5%) were rare and 22 specimens (10.8%) remained non-typeable. P genotyping showed P[4], P[8] and P[6] were the most common strains, accounting for 29.3%, 27.6% and 13.8% respectively. P[4]G2 was the most common strain which accounted for 34.1% (14/41) followed by P[8]G1 (29.3%) and P[6]G9 (12.2%). Another 7 uncommon P-G combinations were also identified. CONCLUSION: Rotavirus was the major cause of acute diarrhea in Kunming. An effective rotavirus vaccine for prevention and control of rotavirus diarrhea should be developed.
