Hepatotoxicity of OBS: A review of the emerging PFOS substitute.

As an alternative to perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), sodium perfluorononenyl oxobenzene sulfonate (OBS) is widely used due to its cost-effectiveness. Multiple studies have shown that the liver is a classic target organ for OBS. However, there is currently no systematic review on the hepatotoxic effects of OBS. This review systematically summarizes the exposure characteristics of OBS in the environment and human populations, as well as its mechanisms of liver toxicity. In vivo studies consistently demonstrate that OBS induces hepatotoxic effects, such as hepatomegaly, vacuolization, elevated serum transaminases, and lipid dysregulation, though the manifestation of these phenotypes varies across species and exposure routes. In vitro evidence further shows that OBS reduces cell viability and survival, and triggers necrosis accompanied by inflammation. Mechanistically, oxidative stress, inflammatory signaling, and metabolism disorder are implicated. Critically, most existing work addresses subacute or subchronic exposure, leaving a gap in chronic risk assessment for long-term, low-dose OBS exposure. Moreover, mechanistic studies have focused predominantly on downstream transcriptional and signaling changes, with limited exploration of upstream epigenetic controls. Overall, this study aims to provide a comprehensive reference for future toxicological investigations and liver injury risk assessments related to OBS exposure.

In vivo CD4+ T-cell up-regulation and high dose side effects of refolded duck interleukin-2.

The recombinant duck interleukin-2 (rduIL-2) monomer was firstly isolated under nature condition, and refolded by oxidization procedure. Refolded rduIL-2 monomer induced in vitro proliferation of Con A-stimulated duck splenocytes in a sensitive and dose-dependent manner, and up-regulated in vivo the amounts of CD4+ T cells with low dose of administration. However, high doses intermittent administration resulted in sever side effects in vivo, with typical lymphocytic interstitial pneumonitis and nephritis, and lymphocytic depletion in splenic corpuscle. Our findings might be beneficial to studies of both mechanism and applications in vivo of avian IL-2.

A new texture generation method based on pseudo-DCT coefficients.

In this paper, a new method for generating different texture images is presented. This method involves a simple transform from a certain one-dimensional (1-D) signal to an expected two-dimensional (2-D) image. Unlike traditional methods, the input signal is generated by a simple 1-D function in our work instead of a sample texture. We first transform the 1-D input signal into frequency domain using fast Fourier transform. Based on the sufficient analysis in 2-D discrete cosine transform (DCT) domain, where each of the coefficients expresses a texture feature in a certain direction, the 2-D pseudo-DCT coefficients are then constructed by appropriately rearranging the Fourier coefficients in terms of their frequency components. Finally, the corresponding texture image can be produced by 2-D inverse DCT algorithm. We applied the proposed method to generate several stochastic textures (i.e., cloud, illumination, and sand), and several structural texture images. Experimental results indicate the good performance of the proposed method.

Density functional study on the reaction mechanism of proton transfer in 2-pyridone: effect of hydration and self-association.

The proton-transfer mechanism in the isolated, mono, dehydrated forms and dimers of 2-pyridone and the effect of hydration or self-assistance on the transition state structures corresponding to proton transfer from the keto form to the enol form have been investigated using B3LYP and BH-LYP hybrid density functional methods at the 6-311++G (2d, 2p) basis set level. The barrier heights for both H2O-assisted and self-assisted reactions are significantly lower than that of the bare tautomerization reaction from 2-pyridone to 2-hydroxypyridine, implying the importance of the superior catalytic effect of H2O and (H2O)2 and the important role of 2-pyridone itself for the intramolecular proton transfer. Long-range solvent effects have also been taken into account by using the continuum model (Onsager model and polarizable continuum model (PCM)) of water. The tautomerization energies and the potential energy barriers are increased both for the water-assisted and for the self-assisted reaction because of the bulk solvent, which imply that the tautomerization of PY becomes less favorable in the polar solvent.

Optimization of integer wavelet transforms based on difference correlation structures.

In this paper, a novel lifting integer wavelet transform based on difference correlation structure (DCCS-LIWT) is proposed. First, we establish a relationship between the performance of a linear predictor and the difference correlations of an image. The obtained results provide a theoretical foundation for the following construction of the optimal lifting filters. Then, the optimal prediction lifting coefficients in the sense of least-square prediction error are derived. DCCS-LIWT puts heavy emphasis on image inherent dependence. A distinct feature of this method is the use of the variance-normalized autocorrelation function of the difference image to construct a linear predictor and adapt the predictor to varying image sources. The proposed scheme also allows respective calculations of the lifting filters for the horizontal and vertical orientations. Experimental evaluation shows that the proposed method produces better results than the other well-known integer transforms for the lossless image compression.

Ultrasound-assisted polyol method for the preparation of SBA-15-supported ruthenium nanoparticles and the study of their catalytic activity on the partial oxidation of methane.

Metallic Ru nanoparticles have been successfully produced and incorporated into the pores of SBA-15 in situ employing a simple ultrasound-assisted polyol method. The product has been confirmed by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, where ultrasound provides both the energy for the reduction of the Ru(III) ion and the driving force for the loading of the Ru(0) nanoparticles into the SBA-15 pores. An ultrasound-assisted insertion mechanism has been proposed based on the microjets and shake-wave effect of the collapsed bubbles. The catalytic properties of the SBA-15-supported Ru nanoparticles have been tested by the partial oxidization of methane and show very high activity and high CO selectivity.
