Removal of direct dyes by coagulation: the performance of preformed polymeric aluminum species.

Removal of three direct dyes (Direct Black 19, Direct Red 28, and Direct Blue 86) by coagulation with three different Al based coagulants was investigated. The main purpose of this paper is to examine the coagulation features of polymeric aluminum coagulants in treatment of dye-polluted waters and the emphasis was placed on the roles of preformed Al species, particularly Al(13). The performance of Al(13) in coagulation of dyes was observed through jar tests by comparing traditional Al salt, polyaluminum chloride (PACl), and purified Al(13). The results showed that under most cases Al(13) had significantly higher efficiency in removal of direct dyes than traditional Al salt and commercial PACl with the exception of Direct Red 28 removal under high pH range. The coagulation of direct dyes could be greatly affected by pH. Reducing pH was favorable for preformed Al species in a broad pH range. For traditional Al coagulant, efficient dye removal only occurred in a relatively narrow pH range of near 6.0. The outstanding coagulation behavior of Al(13) could be ascribed to its high charge neutralization ability, relative stability and potential self-assembly tendency.

Enhanced coagulation in a typical North-China water treatment plant.

The characteristics of typical source waters in northern China and their enhanced coagulation features were studied in this paper. Through bench scale tests, a composite coagulant (HPAC) was selected for this kind of high alkalinity and pH water. It can be 30% more efficient in organic matter (OM) removal than the traditional coagulants (AlCl(3), FeCl(3)), and polyaluminum chloride (PACl), especially more efficient in removing high SUVA, hydrophobic and high molecular weight dissolved organic matter (DOM). It is found that some DOM with low SUVA has precedence over that with high SUVA to be removed at conventional dosages in some seasons, and that the priority of DOM removal is in the same sequence for all the coagulants. DOM with high SUVA is not always more easily removed. When applying HPAC as coagulant, flotation process can remove hydrophobic OM more efficiently than sedimentation process in pilot scale tests.

Morphological characterization of suspended particles under wind-induced disturbance in Taihu Lake, China.

Sediments are disturbed by wind frequently, especially in the shallow lakes. The characteristics of resuspended sediment particles in Taihu Lake were studied under different wind velocities. It showed that sediment particles suspended obviously and particle number in overlying water increased directly under high wind-induced disturbance. Suspended solid (SS) concentration was less than 50 mg/l when the wind velocity was below 3.0 m/s, however, it increased to more than 300 mg/l when the wind velocity was 10.0 m/s. Two methods were used to measure the fractal characteristics of particles. One was light scattering and the other was image analysis. The three-dimensional fractal dimensions of suspended particles, measured by light scattering, were between 2.26 and 2.44; correspondingly, the two-dimensional fractal dimensions, calculated by image analysis, were between 1.44 and 1.77. Moreover, the three-dimensional fractal dimensions were directly proportional to two-dimensional fractal dimensions. The characteristic length of particles was calculated by image analysis. The minimum characteristic length was close to 8.5 microm when the wind velocity was 1.5 m/s at 50 cm beneath lake surface, while, the maximum characteristic length was approximate to 24 microm when the wind velocity was 10 m/s at the depth of 150 cm.

Characteristic features of Bacillus cereus cell surfaces with biosorption of Pb(II) ions by AFM and FT-IR.

In order to elucidate the potential mechanisms involved in the biosorption of metal ions, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy were used to characterize the interaction between Pb2+ and Bacillus cereus. AFM imaging of the biomass surfaces exposed to different concentrations of lead ions solution showed a major morphological change occurred after Pb2+ biosorption. The FT-IR spectra indicated the binding characteristics of the lead ions involved the carboxyl, hydroxyl and amino groups in the biomass. Equilibrium biosorption experiments of Pb2+ were carried out to investigate the effects of pH values and the initial metal concentrations. The experimental isotherm data were then modeled using Langmuir, Freundlich, and Redlich-Peterson isotherm equations. As a result, the Redlich-Peterson model yielded the best fit of experimental data. Kinetics experiments showed the biosorption was a rapid process and the pseudo-second-order model was successfully applied to predict the rate constant of biosorption.

Characterization of the phosphate adsorption and morphology of sediment particles under simulative disturbing conditions.

The behavior of nutrient release and adsorption from sediments was influenced by hydrodynamic disturbance significantly. The resuspension/sedimentation processes of sediment particles and phosphate adsorption in Taihu Lake were investigated under different disturbing intensity by utilizing simulative conditions. The effect of morphological characteristics of suspended particles on phosphate adsorption was also studied. In order to elucidate the characteristics of particles suspended by disturbance, the size and structure of particles during different time were monitored on-line by using photometric dispersion and particles image analysis. The method of fractal geometry to explore the morphology characteristics of particles was also used. The results showed that sediments suspended obviously and the phosphate concentration of overlying water decreased rapidly when strong disturbance was applied. Moreover, two different disturbing conditions, one was static condition without wind and the other was weak disturbing intensity with slow wind velocity, following heavy disturbance were compared, and it turned out that the turbidity and phosphate concentration were lower in the latter because the size and the structure of suspended particles were more favorable in the latter disturbing condition. The flocculation index of suspended particles was 0.25 and characteristic length was 30 microm under 100 rpm disturbance; comparatively, when heavy disturbance increased to 120 rpm, the flocculation index grew up to 0.60 and the characteristic length was greater than 60 microm. The fractal dimensions of suspended particles were between 1.65 and 1.92.

Phosphorus adsorption on natural sediments: modeling and effects of pH and sediment composition.

The classic Langmuir isotherm equation was modified to describe phosphorus (P) adsorption on P-polluted sediments. The P adsorption characteristics of six sediment samples from Chinese Taihu Lake were studied by short-term isotherm batch experiments and related to sediment composition. The maximum P adsorption capacities (PAC) and P-binding energy constant (k) were obtained by nonlinearly fitting sorption data using the modified Langmuir isotherm model. Native adsorbed exchangeable phosphorus (NAP), the zero equilibrium P concentration value (EPC(0)), and partitioning coefficients (K(p)) were subsequently calculated by corresponding formulae. K(p) and PAC were linearly related to the contents of active Fe and Al in sediments by least squares regression analyses (R(2) approximately 0.9 for both). The effect of pH in a wide range on adsorption process was investigated and H2PO4- was presumed to be the preferential sorption species in overall sorption process. The fact that the amount of P sorbed and zeta potential of sediment particles have no necessary relationship reveals that a strong contribution to the P binding still comes from a ligand-exchange process on the Me-OH(2+) and Me-OH sites rather than electrostatic attraction. In addition, the influence of oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) was investigated and discussed and the dual nature of sediments as a pool or source of P in natural waters was evaluated in site T1-T4.

Sorption interaction of phenanthrene with soil and sediment of different particle sizes and in various CaCl2 solutions.

The objective of this investigation is to evaluate the influences of natural sorbent particle size and system Ca(2+) concentration on sorption of low-polarity organic chemicals. The physicochemical properties of the different particle size soil and sediment subsamples and the surface characters of the soil and sediment samples in various CaCl(2) concentrations were determined. The sorption behavior of phenanthrene (PHN) on the subsamples of different particle size and to the samples in various CaCl(2) solutions was examined. Batch experiments demonstrate that the sorption capacities increase with decreased particle size for both soil and sediment. It is presumably due to the higher total organic carbon (TOC) content for the finer particles. But the enhancements in sorption coefficients are not met with the equal increases in TOC contents. The effect of Ca(2+) on PHN uptake is strong in short contact time but slight in long contact time. With increasing Ca(2+) concentration, the sorption capacities for Beizhai soil increase first in the low Ca(2+) concentration range, and then decline. Nevertheless, the increase of Ca(2+) concentration greatly reduces the uptake of phenanthrene on Guanting sediment over the overall measured range. The different physicochemical properties, such as dissolved organic carbon (DOC) content, mineral and element composition, and surface characters, between soil and sediment may result in this discrepancy.

Counterflow co-flocculation flotation for water purification.

A new method for potable water treatment was brought forward and studied in this research. The treatment process was named as counterflow co-flocculation flotation (CC-FF). Pilot experiment was conducted and the operational parameters were presented. The optimized operational conditions are as follows: the detention time is 6-11 min with hydraulic load of 9-16 m3/(m2 h); the recycle ratio should be no less than 8% while the distance between the inlet of source water and recycle water should be greater than 1200 mm. If the source water turbidity was lower than 100 NTU, 0.12-0.35 mmol/L Al dosage is enough to maintain efficient turbidity removal. Since the flocculation and flotation processes were carried out in the same tank, this new technique has some advantages than the conventional flocculation-flotation methods. Firstly, the microbubbles released from recycle water will participate in the flocculation of suspended particles, hence the low-density but high shear-force-resistance flocci could be formed. Secondly, the microflocci or suspended particles will be functioned as 'nucleus' during the bubble formation from air-dissolved recycle water. Thirdly, in the midsection of the tank a blanket of bubble-microfloc aggregates could be formed, which will intercept the downward-flow flocci and upward-flow bubbles efficiently, thus keep the renovation and stability of the blanket.

[The application of polyferric chloride in micro-flocculation deep bed filtration].

Compared with polyaluminium chloride (PAC), the application efficiency of polyferric chloride (PFC) were investigated by pilot micro-flocculation deep bed filtration. The results show that, under the condition of lower dosage (Fe:Al = 3:5), the headloss cycle of PFC was 63 h, and its output in a cycle was 1504 m3/m2, but PAC headloss cycle was 53 h with its output 1266 m3/m2. It is concluded that PFC was benefit to prolong operation cycle and improve output. The research on particle removal mechanism shows that PFC could enhance the floc growth, and the PFC flocs could be effectively entrapped and dehydrated. Therefore PFC is more suitable for the micro-flocculation deep bed filtration process than PAC.

[Particle entrapment mechanism in deep bed filtration].

Theoretical analysis was carried out in this paper to study the interaction in the bed filtration process, and the physico-chemical forces between the filter media and suspended particles in water were presented. Pilot study of the micro-flocculation deep bed filtration was carried out in the No. 9 Potable Water Treatment Plant of Beijing, the interception of particles of 1-10 microns diameter in the 500 cm deep filter bed was analyzed, and the head loss variation during 65 h was monitored. The shear force of 1-10 microns diameter-particle under 24 m/h filtration velocity was calculated. The theoretical physico-chemical forces between the filter bed and suspended particle of 1-10 microns diameter under the condition of -25 mV and -125 mV surface potential was also presented. The theoretical results are reasonably consistent with the experimental data, from which it can be concluded that the operation principles of micro-flocculation deep bed filtration could be analyzed by the physico-chemical interaction between the particles and filter media.

Surface acid-base behaviors of Chinese loess.

Acid-base titration was applied to investigate the surface acid-base properties of a Chinese loess sample at different ionic strengths. The acidimetric supernatant was regarded as the system blank of titration to correct the influence of particle dissolution on the estimation of proton consumption. The titration behavior of the system blank could be described by the hydrolysis of Al3+ and Si(OH)4 in aqueous solution as well as the production of hydroxyaluminosilicates. The formation of Al-Si species on homogeneous surface sites by hydrous aluminum and silicic acid, released from solid substrate during the acidic titration, was considered in the model description of the back-titration procedure. A surface reaction model was suggested as follows: >SOH<-->>SO(-)+H+, pK(a)(int)=3.48-3.98;>SOH+Al(3+)+H4SiO4<-->>SOAl(OSi(OH)3(+)+2H+, pK(SC)=3.48-4.04. Two simple surface complexation models accounted for the interfacial structure, i.e., the constant capacitance model (CCM) and the diffuse layer model (DLM), and gave a satisfactory description of the experimental data. Considering the effect of ionic strength on the electrostatic profile at the solid-aqueous interface, the DLM was appropriate at the low concentrations (0.01 and 0.005 mol/L) of background electrolyte (NaNO3 in this study), while the CCM was preferable in the case of high ionic strength (0.1 mol/L).

Relative importance of charge neutralization and precipitation on coagulation of Kaolin with PACI: effect of sulfate ion.

The effect of the sulfate ion on coagulation with polyaluminum chloride (PACl) was investigated by using an optical monitoring technique together with the conventional jar test procedure and electrophoretic mobility (EM) measurements. The effect of the SO4(2-)/Al ratio, dosage, and pH were examined in detail. The experimental results show that sulfate has a significantly different effect on PACl coagulation as a result of preformed hydrolysis products, where charge neutralization and precipitation play different parts in the coagulation process. The increased rate of coagulation with increasing SO4(2-)/Al ratio can be partially explained by charge neutralization effects, through increased adsorption and complexation of sulfate, thus giving increased particle collision efficiency. Different PACl samples were prepared with different values of B ([OH]/[Al]). For B = 0 (i.e., AlCl3) with mainly monomers, hydroxide precipitation tends to be accelerated in the presence of sulfate, giving significant turbidity removal. The high charge neutralization ability remains for samples with B = 1.5 and 2.0, with large proportions of preformed oligomers and polymers. Sulfate promotes aggregation of hydrolyzed species for B= 2.5, causing significantly improved coagulation efficiency through an electrostatic patch effect. The results illustrate further that particle charge plays a less important role in coagulation after reaching a certain value, while precipitate formation improves coagulation significantly.

[Adsorption properties of dye compounds on the sediments in Qinghe].

The adsorption properties of six kinds of dyes compounds on the sediments in Qinghe were studied through batch technique. The influences of pH, ion strength and temperature on adsorption as well as the adsorption isotherms were discussed and determined. It was shown that pH value and ion strength were the main effect factors on the adsorption, and the adsorption percentage increased with the temperature increase. The adsorption of these dye compounds on the sediment exhibited Freundlich adsorption behavior. The dynamic adsorption indicated that the adsorption process was divided into two steps: fast adsorption (less than 1 hours) and slow adsorption (more than 12 hours).

Pilot testing of dissolved air flotation (DAF) in a highly effective coagulation-flocculation integrated (FRD) system.

Factors of pretreatment coagulation/flocculation units were studied using raw water of low temperature and low turbidity. Aluminum sulfate (AS) and selected polyaluminium chlorides (PACls) were all effective in the DAF process when used under favorable conditions of coagulant addition, coagulation, flocculation and flotation units. Compared with the AS coagulant, PACls, at lower dosage, could give the same effective performance even with shorter coagulation/flocculation time or lower recycle ratio during the treatment of cold water. This is attributed to the higher-charged polymeric Al species, and the lower hydrophilic and more compact flocculated flocs of PACl coagulant. Based on results of pilot experiments, the goal of FRD system can be achieved by combining a DAF heterocoagulation reactor with PACl coagulant (F), an efficient flocculation reactor (R), as well as an economical auto-dosing system (D).

[Removal of arsenate by a new type of ion exchange fiber].

A new type of ion exchange fiber was prepared for the removal of arsenate from water. A batch sorption experiments showed that the fibrous sorbent had high sorption capacity and good kinetic property for arsenate ion. The sorption kinetic data can be described by the Lagergren pseudo-second order rate equation very well. Freundlich model can simulate the adsorption equilibrium data of arsenate ion in the studied concentration range. The removal of arsenate by the fiber reached a maximum in pH value range of 3.5 to 7.0. The column performance was carried to assess the applicability of the ion exchange fiber for the removal of arsenate ion with satisfactory result. The diluted NaOH solution is an efficient eluant for the desorption of arsenate on from the fiber column, and 30 mL of 0.5 mol/L NaOH can quantitatively recover arsenate from water.

Sorption Behavior of Dye Compounds onto Natural Sediment of Qinghe River.

The objective of this study is to assess the adsorption behavior of C.I. Basic Yellow X-5GL, C.I. Basic Red 13, C.I. Direct Blue 86, C.I. Vat Yellow 2, and C.I. Mordant Black 11 on natural sediment and to identify sediment characteristics that play a predominant role in the adsorption of the dyes. The potentiometric titration experiment is used to investigate acid-base properties of the sediment surface with a constant capacitance surface complexation model. The parameters controlling the sorption such as solution pH and ion strength, as well as the influence of organic carbon and Ca(2+) ion on the adsorption, are evaluated. It is shown that the titration data can be successfully described by the surface protonation and deprotonation model with the least-squares FITEQL program 2.0. The sorption isotherm data are fitted to the Freundlich equation in a nonlinear form (1/n=0.3-0.9) for all tested dyes. With increasing pH value, the sorption of C.I. Mordant Black 11 and C.I. Direct Blue 86 on the sediment decreases, while for C.I. Basic Yellow X-5GL and C.I. Basic Red 13, the extent of sorption slightly increases. In addition, ion strength also exhibits a considerably different effect on the sorption behavior of these dye compounds. The addition of Ca(2+) can greatly reduce the sorption of C.I. Basic Red 13 on the sediment surface, while it enhances the sorption of C.I. Direct Blue 6. The removal of organic carbon decreases the sorption of C.I. Mordant Black 11 and C.I. Direct Blue 86. In contrast, the sorption of C.I. Basic Red 13 and C.I. Basic Yellow X-5GL is obviously enhanced after the removal of organic carbon. The differences in adsorption behavior are mainly attributed to the physicochemical properties of these dye compounds. Copyright 2001 Academic Press.
