Magneto-structural correlations: synthesis of a family of end-on azido-bridged manganese(II) dinuclear compounds with S = 5 spin ground state.

The preparation of a series of multidentate pyridyl-imine ligands, L1-L3, and their reactivity with the Mn(II)/N3- system is described (L1 = [N,N-bis(pyridine-2-yl)benzylidene]ethane-1,2-diamine; L2 = [N,N-bis(pyridine-2-yl)benzylidene]propane-1,3-diamine, and L3 = [N,N-bis(pyridine-2-yl)benzylidene]butane-1,4-diamine). Complexes comprising dinuclear end-on bis(mu-azido)-bridged manganese(II) units of formulas [Mn2(L1)2(N3)4][Mn2(L1)2(N3)2(CH3OH)2](ClO4)2 (two cocrystallized dinuclear units, 1.2), [Mn2(L2)2(N3)2](ClO4)2 (3), and [Mn2(L3)2(N3)2](ClO4)2 (4) have been synthesized. The crystal structures of complexes 1-4 as well as their magnetic properties are presented. Each manganese atom of cocrystallized complexes in compound 1.2 is heptacoordinated, displaying Mn-N-Mn angles, theta, of 102.53(12) and 101.70(12) degrees and Mn...Mn distances of 3.5091(7) and 3.4680(7) A. On the other hand, each manganese center in compounds 3 and 4 is located within an octahedral coordination environment, the complexes displaying theta angles of 104.29(11) and 103.60(18) degrees , respectively, and Mn...Mn vectors of 3.5371(7) and 3.5338(10) A, respectively. Magnetic susceptibility studies revealed the presence of intramolecular ferromagnetic superexchange, yielding an S = 5 spin ground state in all complexes. Fitting of the experimental data led to coupling constants, intermolecular exchange values, and g factors (in the J/zJ'/g format) of 0.77 cm(-1)/0.01 cm(-1)/2.20 (1.2), 2.04 cm(-1)/0.01 cm(-1)/1.99 (3), and 1.75 cm(-1)/-0.05 cm(-1)/2.04 (4), respectively (using H = -2JS1S2 as the convention for the Heisenberg spin-Hamiltonian). These results are consistent with predictions from recent DFT calculations performed on end-on bis(mu-N3-)-bridged Mn(II) dinuclear complexes. A plot of experimental J vs theta, including data from the only preexisting compound of this kind, reveals a linear relationship, which could be the first evidence of a possible magneto-structural correlation between these two parameters.

Microbial transformation of (-)-isolongifolol and butyrylcholinesterase inhibitory activity of transformed products.

The microbial transformation of (-)-isolongifolol (1) by using the standard two-stage fermentation technique with Fusarium lini afforded polar oxygenated metabolites: 10-oxoisolongifolol (2), 10alpha-hydroxyisolongifolol (3), and 9alpha-hydroxyisolongifolol (4). Metabolites 3 and 4 were also formed with the incubation of 1 with Aspergillus niger. All three metabolites were found to be new. Compounds 3 and 4 inhibited butyrylcholinesterase enzyme in a concentration-dependent manner with IC50 values 13.6 and 299.5 microM, respectively. Compound 3 showed un-competitive mode of inhibition against butyrylcholinesterase with Ki value 15.0 microM. The structures of metabolites 2-4 were deduced on the basis of spectroscopic techniques and single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques.

Microbial transformation of mesterolone.

The microbial transformation of mesterolone (= (1alpha,5alpha,17beta)-17-hydroxy-1-methylandrostan-3-one; 1), by a number of fungi yielded (1alpha,5alpha)-1-methylandrostane-3,17-dione (2), (1alpha,3beta,5alpha,17beta)-1-methylandrostane-3,17-diol (3), (5alpha)-1-methylandrost-1-ene-3,17-dione (4), (1alpha,5alpha,15alpha)-15-hydroxy-1-methylandrostane-3,17-dione (5), (1alpha,5alpha,6alpha,17beta)-6,17-dihydroxy-1-methylandrostan-3-one (6), (1alpha,5alpha,7alpha,17beta)-7,17-dihydroxy-1-methylandrostan-3-one (7), (1alpha,5alpha,11alpha,17beta)-11,17-dihydroxy-1-methylandrostan-3-one (8), (1alpha,5alpha,15alpha, 17beta)15,17-dihydroxy-1-methylandrostan-3-one (9), and (5alpha,15alpha,17beta)-15,17-dihydroxy-1-methylandrost-1-en-3-one (10). Metabolites 5-10 were found to be new compounds. All metabolites, except 2, 3, 6, and 7, exhibited potent anti-inflammatory activity. The structures of these metabolites were characterized on the basis of spectroscopic studies, and the structure of 5 was also determined by single-crystal X-ray-diffraction analysis.

Photoinduced [4 + 4] cycloadditions of o-quinones with oxazoles.

[reaction: see text] Photocycloadditions of 9,10-phenanthraquinone (PQ) with oxazoles (1a and 1b) gave [4 + 4] products 2 with the O=C-C=O functionality in PQ and the 2-azadiene moiety in oxazole as 4pi addends. Photoreactions of 1-acetylisatin (IS) with 1a, 1c, and 1d gave [4 + 4] product A, which underwent further [2 + 2] reactions with another (3)IS to furnish 5. These regioselective and diastereoselective [4 + 4] photocycloadditions are rationalized by the intervening of the key conformers for ISC and bond formation of the most stable 1,6-diradical intermediates.

Reaction modes and mechanism in indolizine photooxygenation reactions.

Photooxygenations of 1,2-, 1,3-, and 2,3-di- and 1,2,3-trisubstituted indolizines 1a-1f under different reaction conditions in methanol and acetonitrile have been investigated to establish the general reaction pattern and mechanism in indolizine photooxygenation in view of the influence of the ring substituents and substitution pattern. Photooxygenations of 1-acyl-2-phenylindolizines 1a and 1b and 1,3-dibenzoyl-2-phenylindolizine (1d) are self-sensitized, while those of 1-(p-nitrobenzoyl)-2-phenylindolizine (1c) and 2-phenyl-3-(p-chlorobenzoyl)indolizine (1e) need to be sensitized by rose bengal (RB) or methylene blue (MB). These reactions proceed via a singlet oxygen mechanism yet follow different pathways in methanol and in acetonitrile, with peroxidic zwitterion D (in methanol) and dioxetane E across the indolizine C2-C3 bond (in acetonitrile) as the intervening intermediates. Methanol trapping of the peroxidic zwitterion results in C3-N bond cleavage and pyrrole ring opening to give the corresponding (E)- and (Z)-3-(2-pyridinyl)-3-benzoylpropenoic acid methyl esters (2 and 3) and 4-(2-pyridinyl)-3-phenyl-5-aryl-5-hydroxyfuran-2-one (4) as products in methanol, while O-O bond homolysis of the dioxetane furnishes 3-(2-pyridinyl)-3-benzoyl-2-phenyloxirane-2-carboxaldehyde (6) and 1-(6-methyl-2-pyridinyl)-2-phenylethanedione (5) as products in acetonitrile. 3-Benzoyl-1-indolizinecarboxylic acid methyl ester (1f) is unreactive toward singlet oxygen; however, it could be photooxygenated under electron transfer conditions with 9,10-dicyanoanthracene (DCA) as a sensitizer. This reaction takes place by the combination of the indolizine cation radical with the superoxide anion radical (or molecular oxygen) to give the pyridine ring oxidized methyl 3-benzoyl-5-methoxy-8-hydroxy-1-indolizinecarboxylate (9f), dimethyl 2-(2-pyridinyl)fumarate (8f), and dimethyl 2-(2-pyridinyl)maleate (7f) as products.

An unprecedented 8-fold interpenetrating diamondoid-like coordination polymer containing a Cu+(4)(RCO2)(4) cluster as connecting node.

The reaction of Cu(I)(CH(3)CN)(4)BF(4) with 4-pyridylacrylic acid (4-HPYA) affords an unprecedented 8-fold interpenetrating diamondoid-like coordination polymer network [Cu(I)(3)(4-PYA)(2)(H(2)O)(BF(4)) ] (1) with a Cu(+)(4)(CO(2))(4) cluster as connecting node. The interpenetration in metal coordination polymers is the highest degree ever found within diamondoid nets containing a cluster as connecting note. Its fluorescent property was also reported.

Redetermination of hydronium perchlorate at 193 and 293 K.

A sample of hydronium perchlorate, H(3)O(+) x ClO(4)(-), crystallized from ethanol at ambient temperature, was found to be orthorhombic (space group Pnma) at both 193 and 293 K, with no phase transition observed in this temperature range. This contrasts with the earlier observation [Nordman (1962). Acta Cryst. 15, 18-23] of a monoclinic phase (space group P2(1)/n) at 193 K for crystals grown at that temperature from perchloric acid. The hydronium and perchlorate ions lie across a mirror plane but it is not possible to define at either temperature a simple description of the H-atom positions due to the three-dimensional tumbling of the hydronium cation.

Bis(2-aminopyridine-kappaN(1))(benzoato-kappaO)silver(I).

In the title compound, [Ag(C(7)H(5)O(2))(C(5)H(6)N(2))(2)], the Ag(I) atom is tricoordinated by two independent pyridine N atoms and one benzoate O atom in a nearly planar geometry. An intramolecular N-H.O hydrogen bond forms an S(8) graph ring. The packing is built from molecular layers stabilized by two types of N-H.O hydrogen bond. Intermolecular Ag.N and intramolecular Ag.O contacts were also observed, together with three weak intermolecular C-H.pi interactions.

meso-Bis(phenylsulfinyl)methane.

The title compound, meso-C(13)H(12)O(2)S(2), is in an anti conformation, with R and S configurations around the S atoms. The two O atoms are trans to each other, and the same applies for the two benzene rings. The phenylsulfinyl groups are nearly orthogonal to the central dithiomethane group, and the orientation of the two phenyl rings are determined by the interactions in which they are involved. The packing is built from molecular columns stabilized by weak C-H...O interactions.

trans-Diaquabis(thiosemicarbazido-kappa2N,S)nickel(II) dimaleate dihydrate.

In the title compound, [Ni(CH(5)N(3)S)(2)(H(2)O)(2)](C(4)H(3)O(4))(2).2H(2)O, the Ni atom lies on a center of symmetry and is coordinated by N and S atoms from two thiosemicarbazide ligands and the O atoms of two water molecules in a distorted octahedral geometry. In the asymmetric unit, the three components are linked together by one O-H...O and two N-H...O hydrogen bonds. The packing is built from molecular ribbons parallel to the b direction, stabilized by intramolecular hydrogen bonds, and by one N-H...S and two N-H...O intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The ribbons are further connected into columns by N-H...O interactions and then into a three-dimensional network by three O-H...O hydrogen bonds.

3,3'-[o-Phenylenebis(methyleneoxy)]bis(6-chloroflavone) and 3,3'-propylenedioxybis[6-chloro-2-(2-furyl)-4H-1-benzopyran-4-one].

The title compound 3,3'-[o-phenylenebis(methyleneoxy)]bis(6-chloroflavone), C(38)H(24)Cl(2)O(6), (I), crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c, with the molecules lying across twofold rotation axes so that there is half a molecule in the asymmetric unit, while the other title compound, 3,3'-propylenedioxybis[6-chloro-2-(2-furyl)-4H-1-benzopyran-4-one], C(29)H(18)Cl(2)O(8), (II), crystallizes in monoclinic space group P2(1)/n with one molecule in the asymmetric unit. In both compounds, the benzopyran moiety is nearly planar, with dihedral angles between the two fused rings of 1.43 (8) degrees in (I), and 2.54 (7) and 3.00 (6) degrees with respect to the benzopyran moieties in the two halves of (II). The furan rings are twisted by 8.3 (1) and 8.4 (1) degrees in the two halves of (II). In both compounds, the molecular structure is stabilized by intramolecular C-H.O hydrogen bonds, while the crystal packing is stabilized by C-H.Cl and C-H.O intermolecular hydrogen bonds in (I) and (II), respectively.

Polymeric structure of (ethylenediamine)silver(I) 3-nitrobenzoate monohydrate.

In the ternary title compound, catena-poly[[silver(I)-mu-ethylenediamine-kappa(2)N:N'] 3-nitrobenzoate monohydrate], [[Ag(C(2)H(8)N(2))](C(7)H(4)NO(4)) x H(2)O](n), the Ag atom is bicoordinated in a linear configuration by two different N atoms from two symmetry-related ethylenediamine ligands, thus giving linear polymeric chains with an [-Ag-N-C-C-N-](n) backbone running parallel to the a axis. In the crystal packing, these linear chains are interconnected by N-H...O and O-H...O hydrogen bonds to form layers parallel to the ab plane.

N-[4-bromo-2-[(3-bromo-1-phenylsulfonyl-1H-indol-2-yl)methyl]-5-methoxyphenyl]acetamide.

In the title compound, C(24)H(20)Br(2)N(2)O(4)S, the indole ring system is planar and the S atom has a distorted tetrahedral configuration. The sulfonyl-bound phenyl ring is orthogonal to the indole ring system and the conformation of the phenylsulfonyl substituent with respect to the indole moiety is influenced by intramolecular C-H...O hydrogen bonds involving the two sulfonyl O atoms. The mean plane through the acetylamido group makes a dihedral angle of 57.0 (1) degrees with the phenyl ring of the benzyl moiety. In the crystal, glide-related molecules are linked together by N-H...O hydrogen bonds and C-H...pi interactions to form molecular chains, which extend through the crystal. Inversion-related chains are interlinked by C-H...pi interactions to form molecular layers parallel to the bc plane. These layers are interconnected through pi-pi interactions involving the five- and six-membered rings of the indole moiety.

Bis[14beta-hydroxy-3beta-O-(L-thevetosyl)-5beta-card-20(22)-enolide] methanol solvate monohydrate and 3beta-O-(L-2'-o-acetylthevetosyl)-14beta-hydroxy-5beta-card-20(22)-enolide.

The title compounds, 2C(30)H(46)O(8).CH(3)OH.H(2)O, (I), and C(32)H(48)O(9), (II), respectively, are cardenolide glycosides which were isolated from the seeds of Cerbera odollam. There are two crystallographically independent cardenolide molecules in (I), together with one methanol and one water solvate molecule. In both (I) and (II), the steroid nuclei are in cis/trans/cis configurations, with the cyclopentane rings showing conformational flexibility, viz. an envelope conformation in (I) and a twisted conformation in (II). In both compounds, the lactone ring is nearly orthogonal to the cyclopentane ring. The packing of (I) is composed of molecular layers stabilized by five O-H...O hydrogen bonds. In the packing of (II), the molecules are packed into columns by one O-H...O hydrogen bond, and are further interconnected into a three-dimensional network by one O-H...O and three C-H...O interactions.

Spectral studies and structure of a 2-hydroxyacetophenone 3-hexamethyleneiminyl thiosemicarbazonate(-2) copper(II) complex containing 1,10-phenanthroline.

The spectral studies and structure of a ternary complex of copper(II) with 2-hydroxyacetophenone 3-hexamethyliminylthiosemicarbazonate (L(2-)) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) are reported. The thiosemicarbazone binds to the metal as a dianionic ONS-donor (L(2-)) ligand, and forms a complex of the stoichiometry [CuLphen]. The copper(II) complex was characterized by IR and UV/Vis spectroscopies, as well as by solid state room-temperature magnetic susceptibility. Spin Hamiltonian and bonding parameters of the compound are calculated from the EPR spectra. Computer simulation of EPR spectrum in DMF at 77 K aided the calculation of magnetic and bonding parameters of the compound. The structure of the compound is solved by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The geometry around copper is distorted square pyramidal.

Novel Cu(II)-quinoline carboxamide complexes: structural characterization, cytotoxicity and reactivity towards 5'-GMP.

Three new ligands, N-(8-quinolyl)pyridine-2-carboxamide (HL1), N-(8-quinolyl)glycine-N'-Boc-carboxamide (HL2), N-(8-quinolyl)-L-alanine-N'-Boc-carboxamide (HL3), and their Cu(II) complexes have been synthesized. Crystallographic data reveal that complex I, [Cu(L1)(Ac)(H2O)], is penta-coordinated with a square-pyramidal geometry while complexes V [Cu(L2')(H2O)] and VI [Cu(L3')(H2O)] are tetra-coordinated to give square planar geometry. In vitro tests showed that the Cu(II) complexes with L1 (I-IV) exhibited cytotoxicity at a concentration of 10(-8) M against murine leukemia P-388 and human leukemia HL-60 cell lines, which is more potent than cisplatin. However, ligands HL2 and HL3 and their corresponding copper complexes demonstrated very weak in vitro activities towards the cell lines examined. ESMS data shows that complex I binds rapidly with 5'-GMP to form 1:1 and 2:2 adduct.
