Characteristic comparison of bioactive scaffolds based on polyhydroxyalkoanate/bioceramic hybrids.

In this study, bioactive hybrid scaffolds were prepared by combining poly(beta-hydroxybutyrate-co-beta-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) with three kinds of bioceramics, which are sol-gel bioglass (SGBG), tricalcium phosphate (TCP), and hydroxyapatite. The bioactivity and biodegradation of various scaffolds were analyzed with simulated experiments in vitro by immersing the scaffolds into simulated body fluid to evaluate their biomineralizing ability. The changes of the surface components and structures were determined by FTIR, XRD, and SEM analyses. Cell cultures and observation were made in vitro to assess the proliferation of osteoblast on these scaffolds. The results show that there might be ion exchanges and biodegradation reactions occurring between the hybrids and simulated body fluid solution, which result in the weight loss of the scaffolds and the pH changes in solution. An obvious biomineralized deposit layer was formed on the surface of the PHBV/SGBG and PHBV/TCP scaffolds, which was determined to be the bonelike crystalline hydroxyl-carbonate-apatite. The experiments on cell culture show that osteoblast could grow and proliferate on the bioactive hybrid scaffolds.

[Seminal parameter analysis in noninflammatory chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate seminal parameters in noninflammatory chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CAP III B). METHODS: A total of 74 consecutive cases of patients who had been diagnosed as CAP III B and 46 cases of controls were included in the study. Severity of symptoms in men with CAP III B was defined according to the NIH Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index (NIH-CPSI). All of them underwent a 'four glass-test' including leukocyte determination in expressed prostatic secretions (EPS), voided urine after prostatic massage (VB3) and ejaculate semen followed by analysis according to WHO. The analysis included seminal volume, pH, duration of liquefaction, sperm density, vitality, motility(a + b) and morphology. Correlations between the duration or the severity of symptoms and spermiogram results in patients with CAP III B were assessed respectively. RESULTS: The CAP III B group and the control group differed significantly in ejaculate volume, duration of liquefaction and motility, while the remaining parameters did not differ significantly. The duration of chronic pelvic pain showed apparently positive correlationship with liquefaction time, while the symptom duration negatively correlated with sperm motility. The NIH-CPSI score had no significant relationship with seminal volume, duration of liquefaction and sperm motility. CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that CAP III B can have a significant negative impact on sperm volume, liquefaction and motility. Our data also supports the results that the longer the duration of symptoms, the more influences on semen liquefaction and motility might be.

[Effects of antibiotic and anti-inflammatory treatment on serum PSA and free PSA levels in patients with chronic prostatitis IIIA].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of antibiotics and a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agent on the level of total prostate specific antigen (PSA) and free PSA ratio (F-PSAR) in patients with chronic prostatitis IIIA. METHODS: A total of 228 outpatients diagnosed as with chronic prostatitis III A received 4-week antibiotic and anti-inflammatory treatment. The PSA level and F-PSAR were determined before and after the treatment, and the changes analyzed. RESULTS: Significant variations were observed in the median PSA concentrations (3.51 microg/L and 2.75 microg/L) and F-PSAR (0.25% and 0.27%) 4 weeks after the treatment. Sixty-five of the patients (28.5%) presented with serum PSA greater than 4 ng/ml, the mean PSA decreased by 32.9%, from 6.24 microg/L before the treatment to 4.58 microg/L 4 weeks after the treatment (P < 0.05), and the serum PSA was normalized in 18 of the 65 patients (27.7%). The median variation of F-PSAR (0.16% and 0.22%) was greater than that of PSA. The variation indexes obtained 4 weeks after the treatment showed no statistical difference from those observed 8 weeks after the treatment. CONCLUSION: Chronic prostatitis IIIA appears to contribute to increased serum PSA levels in some men. Antibiotic and anti-inflammatory treatment could significantly reduce the PSA level and increase F-PSAR.

XAFS studies and computational simulation of calixcrowns-caesium complexes in solution.

Caesium L(3)-edge XANES (X-ray absorption near-edge structure) and EXAFS (extended X-ray absorption fine structure) have been evaluated as means of probing the local structure and the interaction of caesium ions with BPC6 {1,3-alternate bis(2-propyloxy)calix[4]arenecrown-6}, BOC6 {1,3-alternate bis(octyloxy)calix[4]arenecrown-6} and BisC6 (1,3-alternate calix[4]arene bis-crown-6) in NPME (o-nitrophenyl methyl ether) or OA (n-octyl alcohol). The XANES results indicate that the molecular symmetry is enhanced as the caesium ions are embedded. The EXAFS spectra demonstrate that the coordination numbers (N) and average distances (R) from the central caesium ion to the O atoms are: for BPC6, N = 7.0, R = 3.22 Angstroms (in NPME), and N = 7.0, R = 3.23 Angstroms (in OA); for BOC6, N = 6.8, R = 3.28 Angstroms (in NPME), and N = 6.9, R = 3.27 Angstroms (in OA); for BisC6, N = 6.9, R = 3.21 Angstroms (in NPME). Density functional theory at the triple-zeta adding polarization basis set level was used to simulate the BPC6, BOC6 and BisC6 coordination with the caesium ions. Data show that the seven-oxygen-configuration average distances from the central caesium ion to the O atoms are R = 3.38 for BPC6, R = 3.40 for BisC6 and R = 3.39 for BOC6.

Approach toward nanoplate poly(styrene sulfate): synthesis of nano-polymers with special morphology by using Ldhs as template.

A simple chemical method to obtain nanopolymers with special morphology is reported. The key to the success of this preparation was the use of layered double hydroxides (LDHs), a two-dimensional host material, as template. Typical procedures include in-situ polymerization of the monomers in the interlayers of the LDH template, followed by the dissolution of LDH sheets so that the formed polymers can be free and collected. The obtained results demonstrate potential of LDHs as tools for the controlled synthesis of nanopolymers with platelike morphology.

[Modified Mitchell's technique for repair epispadias with a report of 3 cases].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a modified Mitchell's technique for epispadias repair. METHODS: Three patients with epispadias were undergoing the treatment. It was performed to form a penile pedicled flap or scrotal mediastinum flap for the repair of the urethra and the urine was drained through a perined "U" shaped stent. RESULTS: All of the patients were successfully treated in one-stage with a good appearance and a matching opening of the urethra. CONCLUSION: The above mentioned technique could be a good method for epispadias repair.

[Application of multihole U-shaped drainage stent in complex posterior urethra surgery].

OBJECTIVE: To study a method for using a new drainage stent following complex posterior urethral operation. METHODS: Fifty-five patients,15 of whom had complex posterior urethrorectal fistula, 35 had complex posterior stricture or atresia, and 5 had bladder exstrophy, received surgical treatment, after which multihole U-shaped drainage stent was applied. RESULTS: All the patients were normal in micturition and no complications occurred during the follow-up period lasting for 1 to 10 years. CONCLUSION: Multihole U-shaped drainage stent performs the functions of both stenting and drainage, and is applicable in complex posterior urethral surgery.

Polymer-stabilized liquid crystal blue phases.

Blue phases are types of liquid crystal phases that appear in a temperature range between a chiral nematic phase and an isotropic liquid phase. Because blue phases have a three-dimensional cubic structure with lattice periods of several hundred nanometres, they exhibit selective Bragg reflections in the range of visible light corresponding to the cubic lattice. From the viewpoint of applications, although blue phases are of interest for fast light modulators or tunable photonic crystals, the very narrow temperature range, usually less than a few kelvin, within which blue phases exist has always been a problem. Here we show the stabilization of blue phases over a temperature range of more than 60 K including room temperature (260-326 K). Furthermore, we demonstrate an electro-optical switching with a response time of the order of 10(-4) s for the stabilized blue phases at room temperature.

[Diagnosis and treatment of adrenal medullary hyperplasia (with report of 8 cases)].

OBJECTIVE: To study the diagnosis and treatment of adrenal medullary hyperplasia (AMH). METHODS: An retrospective analysis of the clinical data of 8 patients with AMH admitted in our hospital from May 1998 to May 2002 were conducted with a review of the follow-up study. RESULTS: CT scanning of the adrenal gland showed unilateral abnormal appearance in all 8 cases. Diagnoses of AMH in 4 patients and pheochromocytoma in the other 4 patients were established before surgery. All the patients underwent unilateral adrenalectomy, among whom 7 were cured and 1 suffered recurrence 1 month after operation because of medullar hyperplasia in the contralateral adrenal gland. CONCLUSIONS: AMH should be differentiated from pheochromocytoma, especially from adrenal nodules shown by catecholamin assay. Definite diagnosis depends on pathological examination and surgical removal through abdominal approach is the best choice of treatment, in which both sides of the adrenal glands should be explored.

[Misdiagnosis of corticomedullary mixed pathological changes in adrenals: report of 4 cases].

Pathological changes usually occur independently in the adrenal cortex and medulla because of their distinct embryonic origins, and changes involving both the cortex and medulla are rare. We report 4 cases of corticomedullary mixed pathological changes adrenal glands. CT scanning of the adrenal glands showed unilateral abnormalities in all the 4 cases, 3 of which were diagnosed as aldosteronism and the other pheochromocytoma before surgery. Unilateral adrenalectomy was performed in the 4 patients 3 being cured and discharged. The other 1 had recurrence 18 months postoperatively with suspected pathological changes on the other side. Subsequent pathological examination confirmed the suspicion in both the cortex and medulla of the other adrenal gland. In cases with clinical presentations as simultaneous onset of aldosteronism and catecholamine responses, pathological changes in both the cortex and medulla of the adrenal glands should be considered. Perioperative management of such cases should be the same as that in cases of catecholamine responses, and the diagnosis relies on histopathological examination.
