Alternatively modified bingel reaction for efficient syntheses of C60 hexakis-adducts.

It was found that the C60 hexakis-adduct (Th) bearing 12 electron-donating N,N-dimethylaniline moieties could not be synthesized by the Bingel-Hirsch method with either classical or deviated experimental parameters in a one-pot reaction. A different modification to the original Bingel reaction without the use of any templating agent was necessary for high-yield synthesis of the compound. The generalization of this alternatively modified Bingel method to the preparation of other C60 hexakis-adducts is demonstrated. [structure: see text].

Identification of genetic markers to distinguish the virulent and avirulent subspecies of Pantoea stewartii by comparative proteomics and genetic analysis.

Pantoea stewartii subsp. stewartii (Pnss), the causal agent of Stewart's bacterial wilt and leaf blight of maize and sweet corn, is one of the quarantine pathogens in many countries and regions. In contrast, P. stewartii subsp. indologenes (Pnsi), the closely related subspecies of Pnss, is avirulent on these plants. In this study, the protein expression profiles of these two subspecies were compared using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis analysis. Twenty-one unique protein spots consistently detected in Pnss but not in Pnsi were analyzed by mass spectrometry. Some of these Pnss-specific proteins are known to be essential for virulence and survival in host, such as FoxR and HrcJ, which are the key components of iron uptake and Type III secretion systems, respectively. For further genetic analysis, six Pnss-specific proteins were characterized by peptide sequencing. Southern and Northern blot analyses revealed that the differences in protein expression profiles of the two subspecies were either due to the discrepancy at genome level or because of the variations in transcriptional expression. The results provide novel genetic markers to distinguish the two closely related subspecies and may also serve as useful clues for investigation of the genetic basis accounting for their sharp difference in virulence.

Derivatized fullerenes bearing multiple electron donors: synthesis and charge transfer properties.

A series of methano-C60 adducts bearing up to six electron donating N,N-dimethylaniline units (denoted as D compounds), along with their analogues without the dimethylamino groups as references (R compounds), were synthesized. The redox properties of the D compounds in solutions were evaluated spectroscopically in reference to the R compounds. According to UV/vis absorption results, there are obviously ground-state intramolecular charge-transfer complexes in the D series, and the charge-transfer effects apparently become saturated with only two donor units in the molecule. The photoinduced intramolecular electron-transfer properties of the D compounds were investigated via fluorescence measurements. The emission from intramolecular exciplexes can be found only in the D molecule with two electron donor units. Throughout the D series, the fluorescence properties are highly sensitive to the solvent polarity, with the emission completely quenched for all of the molecules in a polar solvent like methylene chloride. Mechanistic implications of the results are discussed.

Deuterium attachment to carbon nanotubes in deuterated water.

A systematic investigation on the unusual attachment of labile deuterium to carbon nanotubes in deuterated water and alcohols is reported. The carbon nanotubes were solubilized through the established functionalization of the nanotube-bound carboxylic acids to allow solution-phase reaction and characterization. The deuterium attachment was found under several experimental conditions, including the use of deuterated ethanol as a co-reactant in the nanotube functionalization reaction and the refluxing of functionalized or simply purified carbon nanotubes in deuterated water and alcohols. The solubility of the functionalized carbon nanotube samples in common organic solvents and water allowed unambiguous (2)H NMR characterization. The reproducible broad (2)H NMR signal at approximately 6.5 ppm is assigned to carbon nanotube-attached deuterium species. The assignment is supported by the results from FT-IR measurements. The carbon-deuterium interaction is so strong that the corresponding vibration resembles the typical C-D stretching mode in the characteristic frequency region. The FT-IR peak intensities also correlate well with the (2)H NMR signal integrations in a series of samples. Mechanistic implications of the results are discussed.

Selective interactions of porphyrins with semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes.

A derivatized porphyrin with long alkyl chains, 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(hexadecyloxyphenyl)-21H,23H-porphine, is selective toward semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in presumably noncovalent interactions, resulting in significantly enriched semiconducting SWNTs in the solubilized sample and predominantly metallic SWNTs in the residual solid sample according to Raman, near-IR absorption, and bulk conductivity characterizations.
