Photopolymer microtips for efficient light coupling between single-mode fibers and photonic crystal fibers.

A novel method for light coupling between single-mode fibers (SMFs) and small-core photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) is demonstrated. The method is based on growing photopolymer microtips directly on the end faces of SMFs. The shape and size of the tips can be controlled by adjusting the laser power and the exposure time for polymerization to match the mode field to the small-core PCFs. A 5 dB improvement in coupling efficiency between a SMF and a commercial small-core, highly nonlinear PCF is experimentally demonstrated. This compact and efficient butt-coupling method is particularly suitable for PCF gas sensor applications.

Concentration-induced nonuniform power in tunable erbium-doped fiber lasers.

We report, for the first time to our knowledge, the presence of concentration-induced nonuniform power in tunable erbium-doped fiber lasers. A theoretical model is proposed with pair-induced quenching taken into account. We obtain good agreement between numerical and experimental results of a high-concentration erbium-doped fiber ring laser with a large tuning range of over 100 nm. These findings are useful for the design of lasers with doped fibers.

Mode recoupling in a novel Bragg grating pair.

A new type of mode recoupling in a Bragg grating pair, in which one of the gratings is written in the fiber cladding, is proposed to overcome limitations of concatenated long-period and fiber Bragg gratings reported earlier [Opt. Lett. 27, 1214 (2002)]. Its reflection spectrum is similar to that of the previously reported concatenated grating structure; however, the reflectivity can be much larger than the previous limitation of 50%. Furthermore, avoidance of the loss induced by a long-period grating makes such a Bragg grating pair more attractive for practical applications.
