Adiponectin represents an independent risk factor for hypertension in middle aged Korean women.

Adiponectin, which is secreted specifically by adipose tissue, has been shown to act as an anti-atherosclerotic protein. Several studies have shown that adiponectin levels are lower in individuals with obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The present study investigated relationships between serum adiponectin levels and body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), blood pressure (BP) and lipid profiles in 300 middle-aged Korean women (mean age 50.6 +/- 6.2; BMI 25.78 +/- 3.68 kg/m(2)). The serum adiponectin level was positively associated with high density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol (r = 0.29) and negatively associated with BMI, WHR, percent body fat, triglyceride (TG), systolic BP, and diastolic BP. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that increasing concentrations of adiponectin were associated with lower risk of hypertension. In overall odds ratios (95% CIs) for hypertension, those in the second, third, and fourth (versus the first) quartile of adiponectin after adjustment for age were 0.59 (0.297-1.185), 0.47 (0.236 - 0.938), and 0.32 (0.16 - 0.648), respectively. Regardless of BMI, WHR and percent body fat, higher adiponectin was independently associated with a lower risk of hypertension. These findings suggest that the serum adiponectin level is decreased with atherogenic lipid phenotype including hypertriglyceridemia and low HDL-cholesterol. Furthermore, low serum adiponectin concentration may be an independent risk factor for hypertension in middle-aged Korean women.

Isolation and characterization of a novel mycovirus, PeSV, in Pleurotus eryngii and the development of a diagnostic system for it.

A novel mycovirus was isolated from a cultivated edible mushroom, Pleurotus eryngii, with severe epidemic symptoms. Purification of the virus was carried out by a sequential procedure of polyethylene glycol precipitation, differential centrifugation, and equilibrium centrifugation in a CsCl gradient. Nuclease digestion assay and protein analysis revealed that the virus consisted of a single-stranded RNA (ssRNA) genome of 7.8 kbp which was encapsulated by a coat protein of 22 kDa. Transmission electron microscope showed that it was spherical with a diameter of 31 nm. Since there was neither a previous report on discovery of a virus in P. eryngii, nor known mushroom viruses with similar characteristics, we concluded that this is a novel virus and thus have named it as P. e ryngii Spherical Virus (PeSV). Because of a diagnostic test would be helpful in preventing the PeSV-related disease outbreaks, we developed a triple antibody sandwich-ELISA (TAS-ELISA) system using anti-PeSV mouse monoclonal and anti-PeSV rabbit polyclonal antibodies. The TAS-ELISA system successfully detected less than 0.5 microg of the virus particles in 1 g diseased mushroom tissue collected from various commercial farms.

Onset of dendritic flux avalanches in superconducting films.

We report a detailed comparison of experimental data and theoretical predictions for the dendritic flux instability, believed to be a generic behavior of type-II superconducting films. It is shown that a thermomagnetic model published very recently [Phys. Rev. B 73, 014512 (2006)10.1103/PhysRevB.73.014512] gives an excellent quantitative description of key features like the stability onset (first dendrite appearance) magnetic field, and how the onset field depends on both temperature and sample size. The measurements were made using magneto-optical imaging on a series of different strip-shaped samples of MgB2. Excellent agreement is also obtained by reanalyzing data previously published for Nb.

L-carnitine stimulates lipolysis via induction of the lipolytic gene expression and suppression of the adipogenic gene expression in 3T3-L1 adipocytes.

We investigated the lipolytic effects of L-carnitine in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. L-carnitine at 10-S100 nM suppressed lipid accumulation. The release of glycerol and free fatty acid into the medium was significantly increased by 1.5- and 1.7- fold, respectively, by the addition of 100 nM L-carnitine compared with the control (P < .05). The mRNA levels of hormone-sensitive lipase, carnitine palmitoyltransferase I-a, and acyl-coenzyme A oxidase, all of which participate in lipid catabolism, were increased in the presence of 100 nM L-carnitine by 2.8-, 2.2-, and 1.6-fold, respectively (P < .05). However, the expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma and adipose-specific fatty acid-binding protein, which are involved in adipogenesis, were down-regulated by L-carnitine in 3T3-L1 adipocytes (P < .05). These results suggest an anti-obesity action of L-carnitine. L-carnitine may modulate lipid metabolism by stimulation of lipolysis and beta-oxidation accompanied by corresponding changes in gene expression and suppression of adipogenic gene expression.

An evaluation of the time for nursing activity in a hospital using a full Electronic Medical Record System (EMR).

This study was designed to analyze the time for direct and indirect nursing activity to evaluate the workload of nurses using a full Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system on practice. The result is that the mean time for nursing activity per nurse was 499.56 minutes, the mean time for direct nursing activity per nurse was 251.1 minutes (50.3%), and the mean time for indirect nursing activity per nurse was 248.42 minutes(49.7%). The time for direct nursing activity was more than the time for indirect nursing activity. There was a significant difference in the time for nursing activity according to workplace (p < 0.00*), but no difference according to nursing career. Regarding 3 duty-shifts, the time for direct nursing activity was highest in the evening shift and the time for indirect nursing activity was highest in the night shift.

Hematological and serum biochemical values in cynomolgus monkeys anesthetized with ketamine hydrochloride.

The effects of ketamine anesthesia on both hematological and serum biochemical variables were investigated in 19 male and 15 female cynomolgus monkeys. Blood samples were obtained from the cephalic vein within 30 minutes of an intramuscular injection of ketamine hydrochloride (10 mg/kg). Ketamine anesthesia caused a reduction in leukocyte counts and a significant reduction in lymphocytes percentages. Ketamine anesthesia also increased the serum activities of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and creatine phosphokinase (CPK), but reduced the serum concentrations of glucose, inorganic phosphate, sodium and potassium. The alterations of hematological and serum biochemical values will be discussed. These alterations should be considered when designing studies for and interpreting data from cynomolgus monkeys.

[Sun Xi-miao in the biography of the Avatamsaka-Sutra].

This paper aimed to introduce and examine the biography of Sun Xi-miao which I found in The Biography of The Avatamsaka-Sutra, that Fazang) wrote in 692 A.D. This document was neglected to understand Sun who was the famous medical writer of the collection of prescriptions, the Bei ji qian jin yao fang. His life is rather well documented, because he has his own biographies in Jiu Tang shu and Xin Tang shu which cited from Da Tang sin yu, published in 807. But I found several new informations about Sun in The Biography of The Avatamsaka-Sutra, such as he use to be a military medicine in the troops of Li Yuan who became the first emperor, Kao Tsu of Tang dynasty and treat Sun with great favour. This document let us know that the Bei ji qian jin yao fang was dedicated to Kao Tsu, known as published in 652 A.D. My conclusions are as follows: First, it was written by Fazang in 692 A.D, who was the real establisher of the fraternity of the Avatamsaka in China, for the purpose of encouraging to copy the Avatamsaka-Sutra. According to this biography, Sun made 750 copies to persuade the monks and the peoples, and that's the reason Fazang wrote his biography. Secondly, it was not conveyed to posterity, such as Sun was good looking, tall and use to be the medicine of Kao Tsu and dedicated his medical book to the first emperor. It might be left out for Tai Tsung's sake in the official records, who murdered his brother, the heir apparent to the throne, and became the second emperor by himself. On the contrary, it was written in Da Tang sin yu, Jiu and Xin Tang shu that Sun made a prediction that his collection of prescriptions would help the holyman after 50 years from Xuan Di of Northern Chou Dynasty. Holyman meant Tai Tsung. I shows that Sun's biographies in the Da Tang sin yu, Jiu and Xin Tang Shu were based on the documents that might be fabricated and embellished for Tai Tsung. Thirdly, this biography let us know that Sun wote the Bei ji qian jin yao fang under the circumstances that the epidemic disease was spreaded in Changan at 618 A.D. and the population of Kao Tsu era (618-626) was decreased rapidly. I think that's why he wrote down the medical morals as the first chapter, and the prescriptions about the gynecology and pediatrics as the second chapter.

Characterization of a novel single-stranded RNA mycovirus in Pleurotus ostreatus.

A mycovirus, named oyster mushroom spherical virus (OMSV), was isolated from cultivated oyster mushrooms with a severe epidemic of oyster mushroom Die-back disease. OMSV was a 27-nm spherical virus encapsidating a single-stranded RNA (ssRNA) of 5.784 kb with a coat protein of approximately 28.5 kDa. The nucleotide sequence of the virus revealed that its genomic RNA was positive strand, containing 5784 bases with seven open reading frames (ORF). ORF1 had the motifs of RNA-dependent RNA polymerases (RdRp) and helicase. ORF2 encoded a coat protein. ORF3 to 7 could encode putative polypeptides of approximately 12, 12.5, 21, 14.5, and 23 kDa, respectively, but none of them showed significant similarity to any other known polypeptides. The 5' end of the viral RNA was uncapped and the 3' end was polyadenylated with 74 bases. Genomic structure and organization and the derived amino acid sequence of RdRp and helicase domain were similar to those of tymoviruses, a plant virus group.

A novel degradable polycaprolactone networks for tissue engineering.

Polycaprolactone (PCL) macromer was obtained by the reaction of PCL diol with acryloyl chloride and confirmed using Fourier transform infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer. Novel degradable PCL networks were prepared through photopolymerization of the PCL macromer. Thermal, mechanical, and morphological characteristics as well as degradability and biocompatibility of the PCL networks were investigated. Differential scanning calorimetry showed that the melting temperature and the calculated weight average crystallinity of PCL networks were decreased with a decrease of molecular weight of PCL diols due to the increased crosslinking density. Thermal stability of PCL networks was higher than that of PCL diols. PCL networks showed faster degradation, and higher compressive modulus and compressive recovery ratios than those of PCL itself because of their low crystallinity and the modification of terminal groups. The porosity of the PCL networks can be controlled by the amounts and size of porogen used. MG-63 osteoblast cell was attached and proliferated on PCL networks. PCL networks therefore may have considerable potential as scaffold for tissue engineering.

Barley beta-glucan lowers serum cholesterol based on the up-regulation of cholesterol 7alpha-hydroxylase activity and mRNA abundance in cholesterol-fed rats.

Barley, which is high in soluble dietary fiber (particularly beta-glucan), is thought to have hypocholesterolemic effects. The present study was performed to further elucidate the hypocholesterolemic actions of waxy barley, and the extent to which they can be attributed to beta-glucan. Male Sprague-Dawley rats (n=21) were fed control (fiber-free) diets, diets with the addition of 2.5%, refined beta-glucan or 30% waxy barley that provides approximately 2.5% beta-glucan in the diet for 2 wk. Body weight gain and food efficiency of rats were unaffected by diet. beta-glucan or waxy barley decreased serum levels of total cholesterol (p < 0.05) by 13.5% or 18.9%, and also decreased LDL-cholesterol 19.4% or 24.3%, respectively. Addition of refined beta-glucan or waxy barley to the diet resulted in greater bile acid excretions (p < 0.05) compared to the control group. The waxy barley diet up-regulated by 2. 3 times and the beta-glucan diet by 1.5 times the activity of cholesterol 7a-hydroxylase (CYP7A1). Hepatic CYP7A1 mRNA level paralleled the increases in enzyme activity. The results of this study suggest that the hypocholesterolemic effects of both beta-glucan and a waxy barley diet may be due to the enhancement of CYP7A1 expression resulting from increased fecal excretion of bile acids.

Academic performance of Korean children is associated with dietary behaviours and physical status.

The purpose of this study was to obtain a fuller understanding of the association of dietary behaviours, physical status and socio-economic status with academic performance in Korean teenagers. The subjects in this study were 6,463 boys and girls, in grade 5, 8, and 11 in Korea. A self-administered questionnaire and the food-frequency form were used. Grade point average (GPA), height, weight, and physical fitness score for the year were recorded from the school record. The academic performance of students was strongly associated with dietary behaviours, especially with regularity of three meals even after control for parent's education level. Regular breakfast and lunch were more important in grades 5 and 8, while regular dinner was more related with academic performance in grade 11. Small, positive associations of height and physical fitness to academic performance were also found. The relative importance of regularity of meals was greater than that of socio-economic status and physical status in older teenagers. The results of this study suggest that accommodation of better dietary environment and nutrition education for three regular meals is recommended.
