Clearance of debris from the iris through the drainage angle of the rabbit's eye.

The fate of particulate material on entering the drainage angle of the rabbit's eye was investigated by transmission electron microscopy. The infiltrate was produced by photocoagulation of the iris. Initially it consisted of plasma, connective tissue and cellular debris, fibrin, and red blood cells. Later, free melanin granules, polymorphs, macrophages, and iris clump cells were all seen to enter the drainage system. Native meshwork cells were found to be active phagocytes and began to degrade various components of the infiltrate within 2 hours of the formation of the iris lesions. Corneal endothelial cells, the cells which cover the iris pillars, and the adventitial cells of the ciliary body were less active but were also phagocytic.

Serum cobalamin and folate in the optic neuropathy associated with tobacco smoking.

The concentrations of vitamin B12 in the sera from 77 patients diagnosed as suffering from the toxic optic neuropathy associated with tobacco smoking were compared with control levels and with serum folic acid concentrations from the same patients. Of these, 17 patients had associated pernicious anaemia. Serum vitamin B12 levels were significantly lower, whereas the folic acid concentrations showed great variation. Folic acid levels in the serum tended to be high when the vitamin B12 level was low (r = 0.29). The results suggest that the role of folic acid in the genesis of the optic neuropathy is not marked. However persistently low levels of folic acid occurred in one subject and significant clinical improvement resulted only from specific therapy.

Particulate phagocytosis by trabecular meshwork endothelium.

We studied the phagocytic response in the trabecular meshwork of rabbits to the debris released by photocoagulation of the iris. Four cell types exhibited phagocytosis: native meshwork endothelium, histiocytic macrophages, polymorphonuclear leukocytes and corneal endothelial cells. Nienty days after the photocoagulation both the lining cells and the trabecular beams of the meshwork had returned to normal.

Electron probe X-ray analysis of an intraocular foreign body.

We describe a simple and rapid method of electron probe x-ray analysis on a foreign body removed from the eye. We demonstrated the presence of copper in an intraocular foreign body which has originated from a blank 0.22 calibre cartridge. Sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, sulpher and chlorine were also detected. It seems likely that these elements were derived from the biological milieu in which the intraocular foreign body had rested for some 2 years and 9 months.
