[Intensity of lipid peroxidation in the small intestinal wall in peritonitis and its correction].

Experiments were conducted on albino rats to study lipid peroxidation (LPO) in muscle homogenates of the small intestine in peritonitis of various duration. LPO increased most significantly in 24-hour peritonitis. There was no statistically significant difference between the LPO values two days later and those of 24-hour peritonitis. With the use of the antioxidant alpha-tocopherol with essential 12 hours after the development of peritonitis no significant changes occurred in the LPO values. In 24-hour peritonitis LPO was initiated but it was less pronounced. alpha-Tocopherol acetate and essential were included in the complex of therapeutic measures in 20 patients. They were administered before and 3-4 days after the operation. As a result the motor-evacuation function of the gastrointestinal tract was restored in a shorter time. The postoperative period took a favorable course, and the duration of in-hospital treatment reduced by 2-3 days on the average.

[Study of regional blood flow in the prognosis of the process of healing of postoperative wounds].

The authors suggest using the regional blood flow in control over the course of the wound process after various types of laparotomy so as to prognosticate the possibility of suppuration of the postoperative wounds. Examination of 20 patients showed that the regional blood flow values depended on the operative trauma and the character of the inflammatory process in the abdominal cavity. Decrease of the regional blood flow in the wound to 24 ml/min/100 g and lower indicates that purulent inflammation will most probably develop in the postoperative wound.

[The motor activity of the gastrointestinal tract in acute appendicitis].

From study of electrogastrograms in 92 patients with acute appendicitis before and in various periods after appendectomy conducted under local or halothane nitrous-oxide-oxygen anesthesia, the authors conclude that electrogastrography may be used in complex with other methods for prognosticating the possibility of the occurrence of postoperative paresis. They point to the preventive significance of general anesthesia in the development of postoperative pareses. Percutaneous electrostimulation had a favourable effect in 12 patients with paresis developing after appendectomy.

Acute Disease↗

[Early diagnosis of postoperative intestinal obstruction].

Forty-three patients were reoperated in the early postoperative period. In 27 of them the cause of early relaparotomy was postoperative intestinal obstruction. In 20 of these 27 patients the cause of postoperative obstruction were adhesive lesions. Of the 43 reoperated patients 31 showed distinct clinical signs and symptoms of postoperative obstruction. In 12 patients early diagnostic laparoscopy was performed due to unclear symptomatology. This allowed to obtain detailed information and to reduce the period of dynamic observation, to lessen postoperative risk, to avoid unnecessary relaparotomy.
