Personal and territorial space of the patients: a nursing ethics question.

Using the technique of the critical incidents, situations and behaviors mentioned by hospitalized patients were identified as far as the invasion of their personal and territorial space was concerned. The analysis of 80 reports of critical incidents revealed: a) 80 situations which were grouped in 11 categories; b) 95 health personnel behaviors related to personal and territorial invasion. These reports were distributed in nine behavior categories related to invasion of personal space and seven categories related to invasion of territorial space. Considering the reported behaviors, the authors emphasize: lack of respect for the patients, making noises and turning the lights on. The data showed that the health personnel do not respect the personal and territorial space of the hospitalized patients. This fact has several negative consequences to the patients such as: negative feelings, decreased quality of assistance, alteration in the pattern of sleep, among others.

[Attitudes of professional nurses towards burn patients: elaboration and reliability tests of a measurement instrument].

In this study it was developed an Instrument for Measuring the Attitudes of Nursing Professionals toward Patients with Burns. 194 items, divided into subscales, expressing favorable and unfavorable attitudes toward patients with burns, were analyzed, concerning their apparent and context validity. Following this psychometric analysis 170 items were selected to compose the definitive scale. The confiability coefficient estimated by the split-half method for the different subscales ranged from 0.61 to 0.82. The confiability coefficient of the total scale was equal to 0.92.

[The trend in the locus of control in diabetic patients].

The tendency of locus of control in diabetic patients is a theme approached by the nurse as an educator. The objectives of this study was to test reliability of the "Instrumento de Medida de Locus de Controle à Saúde (IMLCS)" (Instrument of Measurement of Locus of Control for Health); to confront the distribution of responses to different items of the "IMLCS" by a group of diabetic patients; and to verify the predominance of locus of control for health in the subjects studied. To reach these objectives the "IMLCS" was applied. The data showed that there was a prevalence of subjects with a locus of external control, that the different items were answered in a favorable manner by the subjects and that the scale was valid for the population of diabetic patients. We believe that these results show the need for rethinking the role of the nurse in the education of diabetic patients.

The importance of nonverbal communication during the preanesthesia period.

This article discusses the phenomenon of nonverbal communication as evidenced between preoperative patients and the nurses attending them. Ten such patients and the nursing group assigned to them were directly observed for frequency of nonverbal interaction during the period immediately preceding surgery. Patients' nonverbal expressions of tension, fear, anxiety, and so on were noted, videotaped, and then analyzed according to three categories of interaction: positive, neutral, and negative. Of 2,173 registered nonverbal interactions, 65.1% (1,416) were rated as negative, a finding that should alert nurses to the need to identify patients' manifestations of anxiety so as to provide assurance and a sense of courage preceding surgery. Positive means of communicating nonverbally are discussed.

[Focusing the administrative exercise within the whole of nursing functions].

Within the hospital context, the nurse cannot avoid the administrative function, even though this is a controversial issue in Brazilian nursing. To focus on the problem, in the present study we set out to identify the set of functions of nurses working on the admission floors and to determine the distribution of administrative functions according to their bureaucratic and non-bureaucratic characteristics. The data were collected at four admission units by intermittent observation of work performed by nurses in 1985. The following set of functions were identified: administration (62.5%), patient assistance (19.2%), teaching and research (3.8%), functions that could be delegated to others (6.8%) and personal (7.6%). The administrative functions were classified into bureaucratic and non-bureaucratic with a respective distribution of 77% and 23%. The study indicates that the administrative function is one of the elements defining the nurse's profile, even though the authors believe that this function should be better oriented.
