[Ecological zones of Dagestan territory and epidemiology od acute leukemia in older age groups].

The authors report annual acute leukemia incidence through 1980 to 1995 in Dagestan in respect of implications of of environmental factors. The highest leukemia incidence rate was in the age group over 50 years. Acute leukemia incidence varied with years, sex and territory zones. Active utilization of chemical fertilizers in agriculture proved a contributing factor in the onset of acute leukemia, especially in persons older than 50 years.

[Genetic and phenotypic markers in adult leukemia].

The authors studied a number of original genetic phenotypical markers in leukemia patients. They suggested the existence of polygenic impacts involved in leukemia genesis. Hence, leukemias may be linked with some gene markers. It was established that leukemic subjects had phenotypical frequencies of cerebral hemispheric and sighting eye asymmetry, density of ear wax, hair color significantly different from those in the population. Hence, the above markers may indicate individual predisposition to leukemias.

Differentiation of phenotypic activity and its genetic analysis in native populations of the Caucasus.

This study introduces a novel approach to the dissection of polygenic variation. First, multidimensional analysis was used to define groups within the normal population. Next, these groups were compared on behavioral and physiological measures to establish underlying mechanisms. Finally, groups were compared on a range of polymorphic markers to determine the extent of single-gene effects. As this approach was conducted using three ethnic populations, the implications of between-, as well as within-, population variation can be assessed.

[The second family with hemoglobin Dagestan (alpha 60 Lys----Glu)].

Data have been presented on a new hemoglobin detected in a family of the Lezghin population in the Daghestan ASSR. The structural analysis of this hemoglobin has shown its correspondence to hemoglobin "Daghestan" that was previously detected among the population living in the Tabasaransk region. A detailed genetic analysis has shown a possibility of the gene drift. It was found that the proband's grandmother (his father's mother) had come from the Tabasaransk population of the Republic.
