A proliferation-competent adult rat liver cell monolayer system has been analyzed for tissue-specific functions during its growth cycle. High levels of the adult (L type) form of pyruvate kinase (EC 2.7.1.40) and glutathione S-transferase B ("ligand," EC 2.5.1.18) are observed during the early lag phase; they decline markedly during the logarithmic phase and reappear during the stationary phase. By contrast, elevated levels of the fetal (K type) form of pyruvate kinase and alpha1-fetoprotein production appear only after proliferation begins; this pattern diminishes slightly during stationary phase as the adult phenotype is restored. Albumin production continues throughout the entire growth cycle. These in vitro findings simulate those observed during hepatoproliferative transitions in the intact animal and, as such, constitute a developmental program for normal epithelial cells in primary culture.

In an open-label, multicenter, prospective study, 20 women applied tretinoin (retinoic acid) cream 0.1% daily for 3 months to pregnancy-related stretch marks in the abdominal area. Efficacy was evaluated by analysis of one preselected target lesion, which was rated on a six-point scale (-1 = worse to 4 = cleared). At week 12, significant global improvement was noted from baseline in all stretch marks, and the target lesion decreased in length by 20% (P = .01). Erythema and scaling, the most common adverse events, occurred in 11 patients, decreased in severity after the first month of treatment, and were controlled with continued application of tretinoin and petroleum jelly ointment. In this small study, topical application of tretinoin significantly improved the clinical appearance of pregnancy-related stretch marks.
Forty patients with superficial mycoses were treated with itraconazole, a new triazole derivative, in an open study. In 29 cases the diagnosis was dermatophytosis; in five, candidosis; and in six, pityriasis versicolor. Each patient received 50 mg of itraconazole orally once a day for 30-60 days. Thirty-three patients completed therapy; at the end of therapy, 21.2% were considered clinically cured and 57.6% were considered mycologically cured. Results of direct microscopic examination were negative at 30 days for the patients with pityriasis versicolor; none of the patients with candidosis responded to therapy. Pruritus and other symptoms or signs of infection improved after the 15th day, but even after 60 days of therapy, nine of the 10 patients who finished the trial at that time had residual lesions. The drug was well tolerated. It appears that a dosage of 50 mg of itraconazole daily is not adequate for the treatment of these mycoses.
