Interspecies comparisons of plasma half-life of trimethoprim in relation to body mass.

The relationship between body mass and plasma half-life of trimethoprim was studied in 10 different species of animals and man using published data. Log half-life was positively and significantly correlated to log body mass based on individual measurements in herbivorous animals (n = 23, P < 0.01), in herbivorous animals+pigs (n = 29, P < 0.01), in ungulates (n = 27, P < 0.01), in ruminants (n = 16, P < 0.01) and in non-herbivorous mammals, except pigs (n = 6, P < 0.05). The correlation was described by the allometric equations: t 1/2 beta = 27 W0.26 in herbivorous animals and t 1/2 beta = 125 W0.32 in non-herbivorous animals except pigs.

Restoration of thumb opposition by displacement of extensor pollicis brevis.

An operative procedure for functional repair of thumb opposition is described. The extensor pollicis brevis is displaced to the proximal two-thirds of the carpal canal without detachment of its distal end. Twelve patients with combined lesions of the median and ulnar nerve were operated on. Ten patients were followed up from one to six years after the intervention. Restoration of thumb opposition to the middle or to the ring finger was observed in all, in three cases without sufficient pronation.

Thumb reconstruction through metacarpal bone lengthening.

The experience with thumb reconstruction through metacarpal bone lengthening in 35 patients treated over a period of 12 years is presented. In 25 cases a spontaneous consolidation of the gap between the distracted fragments occurred, whereas in the remaining 10 the gap was bridged by a bone graft. The elongation of the metacarpal achieved varied from 2 to 4 cm. Examination of patients followed from 4 to 8 years after the treatment shows a good appearance of the reconstructed thumb without osteolysis or other trophic changes in the distal end. The quality of the skin sensibility in the amputation stump is preserved after the lengthening.

Thumb reconstruction in children through metacarpal lengthening.

In 7 children, aged 10 to 14 years, we did thumb reconstructions by a gradual lengthening of the first metacarpal. In all cases, spontaneous bone consolidation occurred between the distracted fragments. The average period of treatment was 4 months, and a mean metacarpal elongation of 88% was achieved. The quality of the skin sensitivity in the amputation stump was preserved after the lengthening.
