Vision screening of an adolescent inner city population: a high failure rate and low compliance on follow-up care.
625 inner city high school students were screened. Some 45.8% of this sample were designated as special education students. The referral rate was 52.3% for all students screened. Detailed failure rate by group and category are reported. Special education students had a higher incidence of uncorrected hyperopia and binocular dysfunction. Intervention strategies to improve a poor compliance rate for follow-up care are discussed.

Visual development.
This paper summarizes the postnatal development of the visual system in a format that separates the various parts and functions into Input Components, Transmitting Components, Integrative Mechanisms, and Visually Induced Cognitive Behaviour. This treatment of a number of studies and philosophies that comprise the field of infants' vision indicates that most components and mechanisms are fully operative by the end of the second year of life.

Laterality and directionality--optometric clinical applications.
Five rationales for the optometric evaluation of laterality and directionality are identified in this paper. These include an application of particular studies in the infant's vision literature along with theories of Hershenson, Piaget, Gesell and Kephart and the phenomenon of reversal confusion frequently associated with learning-disabled children. Selected optometric testing procedures are viewed in the context of these rationales.
