Double-blind evaluation of nimesulide vs lysine-aspirin in the treatment of paediatric acute respiratory tract infections.

70 children aged 4 to 12 years with acute infection and inflammation of the respiratory tract (laryngitis, tracheitis, bronchitis, pneumonia) were enrolled in a double-blind investigation and randomised to treatment with nimesulide (50mg granules twice daily) or lysine-aspirin (360mg granules twice daily) for 5 days. The drugs were similarly effective in reducing cough, asthenia and dyspnoea, although nimesulide-treated patients experienced fewer gastrointestinal adverse events. These results confirm the efficacy of nimesulide in the treatment of respiratory inflammation and provide preliminary evidence of its value in children.

Erythrocyte membrane sialic acid in new-born infants.

Erythrocyte surface sialic acid was measured in 94 full-term new-born infants and in 20 premature infants of different ages, varying from 1 to 16 post-natal days. After the first 3 days of life, the amount of sialic acid, both per cell and per gramme of haemoglobin, was rapidly reduced to 70-80% of the initial value; these lower levels were maintained on the following days. The decrease observed on the 4th day may represent an expression of the mechanism by which a large amount of fetal red blood cells is eliminated from the circulation during the same period. Therefore, the relationship between sialic acid decrement and red cell sequestration exists also in fetal erythrocytes, and this may contribute to clarify the exact role of sialic acid in red cell survival time.

Ring chromosome 21. Observation in a female infant.

A case of a female infant with karyotype 46,XX,r(21)/45,XX,-21 is reported. From comparison of the phenotypic anomalies with the other similar cases the large variability of the 21q- syndrome is evident.

[Changes in blood viscosity after administration of vitamin E in the rabbit].

Vitamin E is an essential factor to maintain biological membranes stability and its lack may affect membranes structures and reduce erythrocyte life-span. Vitamin E also play a role in the maintenance of a normal platelet aggregation. A.A. studied the effects of a ten days supply of d-1-alpha tocopherol acetate (50 mg/Kg/die) on blood viscosity in 8 rabbits. Results obtained show a significant reduction of blood viscosity on 6th day of treatment in the male rabbits and a progressive reduction of values from the 6th till the 10th day in female rabbits. The most significant decrease of blood viscosity were obtained at the lowest shear-rates, due to an increased red cells deformability to the antioxidative action of vitamin E on the erythrocytes membrane and to a reduced red cells aggregation. Such modifications on the red blood cells caratheristics can be determined by vitamin E through different mechanism: a) inhibiting red cell membrane's polyunsaturable fatty acids oxidation; b) by removal of abnormal lipids from erythrocyte membrane; c) physical and chemical stabilization of membrane's surface.

[Platelet aggregation in normal and hypertensive subjects during cold pressor test].

The Authors have studied, in 5 normal subjects and in 10 with essential arterial hypertension, the behaviour of platelet aggregation before, during and after cold pressor test. It has been possible to evidence, in hypertensive subjects, a greater responsiveness of platelets to adrenaline induced aggregation. The Authors think that such effects may be due to hyperexcitability of sympathetic nervous system, which can regulate the functional behaviour of platelets in response to cold pressor test.
