[Conditioning factors in the quality of health education for workers in public and collective food catering services].

The authors started from the assumption that "expectations" relating to hygienic work habits of workers in the food catering industry were a function of their health education. Research was conducted in three major food catering units both before and after completion of health education courses. In order to assess workers' awareness, they were asked to fill in a questionnaire pertaining to their sanitary information and their approaches to washing up, cleaning and disinfection. Samples taken from tableware, tools and workers' hands were tested microbiologically. Indices computed to measure the efficiency of the health education courses and the standards of microbial safety, as well as the chi 2 test confirmed the non-stochastic character of the positive findings in experimental units vs. controls.

[Household accidents in an occupationally integrated urban community].

A 42-item questionnaire was used to interview 300 urban residents (working in two chemical plants) who suffered household accidents over the last two years. The main target was to identify the actual causes of these accidents. Findings suggest that accident-producing dysfunctions in the "Man--Non-Professional Environment" system were basically due to particular personal variables such as false mental models of success and lack of risk anticipation from underestimation of task-oriented gestures, prosexis deficit through lack of awareness, rigid work stereotypes and lack of safety constraints. The authors discuss the necessity of a systematic, adaptable educational programme.

[Research on the occurrence of functional anomalies of the peripheral bronchi (small bronchi disease) in workers in a factory with respiratory noxious substances].

A group of 908 subjects has been studied, of which two-thirds were males, classified in 5 categories: unexposed, with light exposure, and severely exposed to inhalation of volatile substances, or various types of dust. A B.M.R.C. file was filled for each of the subjects. This file concerns respiratory symptoms. A forced expirogram was also performed, and FEV 25-75%, FEV 75-85%, and TEM were determined. The two expiratory flows (median and final) are frequently disturbed in subjects without respiratory symptoms, more frequently in smokers with a normal FEV 1. In those exposed to respiratory risk the proportion of alterations increases, but association of smoking with inhalation of noxious chemical substances will determine a modification of FEW 1 and anomalies of the peripheral bronchi occur more frequently in smokers. Between the criteria suggesting the presence of small airways disease, the ratio FEV 25-75% under 60%, with a FEV 1/FVC ratio within normal limits, this being the most sensitive of the criteria, also appears as the most reliable.
