Serum lipids, ABO blood group and sickle cell trait.

One hundred apparently healthy individuals were used in this study. 71% of these had normal haemoglobin (HbAA) while 29% had sickle cell trait (HbAS). Serum cholesterol and phospholipids were investigated. The mean lipid and lipoprotein concentrations (cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol and phospholipid) were higher in the sickle cell trait than in the subjects with normal haemoglobin. When separated into blood groups, 24% belonged to the type A+, 11% to the type B+, 2% to the type AB+ and 63% to the type O+. In relation to sexes, a greater percentage of female population had higher lipid levels then the men, and this was consistent even in the sickle cell trait.

Plasma cholesterol, B-carotene and ascorbic acid changes in human malaria.

Serum cholesterol (Total and free) as well as B-carotene and vitamin C level concentrations during and after severe infection by Plasmodium falciparum were determined. The decrease in the concentrations of cholesterol and B-carotene during and after infection was not statistically significant (P > 0.01), while the decrease in vitamin C was statistically significant (P < 0.01) during and after infection.

Extracellular lipase and proteinase of Basidiobolus haptosporus: possible role in subcutaneous mycosis.

Properties of proteinase(s) and phospholipase A in dialyzed culture filtrate of Basidiobolus haptosporus were studied. Lysolecithin, one of the hydrolytic products of phosphatidyl choline by phospholipase A was prepared and found able to hemolyse human red blood cells and 'clear' rat skin and muscle homogenates. The proteinase was able to digest human serum proteins. The pathogenic mechanism employed by this fungus may involve hydrolysis of lecithin to yield lysolecithin, which destroys cell membranes thereby liberating intracellular contents. The protein components of these contents are then digested by the proteinase(s) yielding amino acids which along with other metabolites serve as nutrients for the growth of the pathogen.

Serum cholesterol levels in a Nigerian population sample.

Serum cholesterol was determined in 104 healthy Nigerians (57 males and 47 females). The average cholesterol concentration was 187 +/- 72.8 mg/100 ml (mean +/- SD) with a range of 60-480 mg/100 ml. Cholesterol levels were higher in males than in females and increased with age. Distribution of cholesterol level was generally skew to the left.

Studies on the late-pre-beta-lipoprotein of human serum.

Very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) isolated from 3 healthy normolipidaemic subjects had a raised VLDL cholesterol to triglyceride ratio. The VLDL fractions gave 2 pre-beta-bands on agarose gel electrophoresis. Family study of the subjects appears to indicate sex linkage of this trait and a possible polygenic type of inheritance.

Comparison of high density lipoprotein and serum cholesterol levels in a European and an African community.

Serum and high density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations have been measured in 210 men and women in a London community and in a Nsukka community. Mean serum cholesterol concentrations were higher in London than in Nsukka. High density lipoprotein cholesterol was, however, higher in Nsukka than in London. Whereas the difference in serum cholesterol reached a statistical level when all the age groups were considered together, there was no statistical difference when the two populations were considered in terms of the young (20-39 year age group) and the middle aged (40-59 year age group). Difference in high density lipoprotein cholestrol, however, reached a statistical level in these two age groups.

Plasma phospholipid changes in tick infested N'dama cattle.

Plasma phospholipid composition and concentration of healthy and tick infested local cattle (N'dama) were studied. Phospholipid concentration was lower in the tick infested cattle. Phospholipid composition was also altered by the tick infestation. The phospholipids mainly affected are phosphatidyl choline, sphingomyelin and lysophosphatidyl choline and are absent from the plasma of tick infested cattle.

The effect of garri on rat plasma cholesterol.

Plasma cholesterol concentrations were measured in rats after incorporation of garri in their diet; control animals were fed a diet without garri. Cholesterol concentrations decreased with incorporation of garri in the diet, but a saturation point was reached after which garri had no further lowering effect on plasma cholesterol. Histology of the kidney and liver revealed cellular vacuolation and cytoplasmic swelling in garri-fed animals.

High density lipoproteins in ischaemic heart disease.

High density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations were significantly lower in ischaemic heart disease patients than in healthy subjects when age and sex-matched. This difference was, however, not observed in the older age group (greater than 60 years).

The evaluation of lipoprotein changes during gemfibrozil treatment.

During treatment with gemfibrozil, 1200 mg daily, total serum triglyceride levels were reduced in 7 of the 11 patients, owing chiefly to a fall in VLDL triglyceride levels. Total serum cholesterol responded variably, falling in a majority of patients with hypercholesterolaemia. High density lipoprotein cholesterol rose during treatment in patients who had either hypertriglyceridaemia or hypercholesterolaemia.
