Myocardial necrosis through chemical-calcic mechanism.

An 18-day-old child is presented with a ventricular septal defect and aspiration bronchopneumonia with abscesses. An extensives myocardial necrosis with calcium deposits is also present. The authors think that the myocardial necrosis is a consequence of the calcium deposition on the mitochondria of myocardial fibres, favoured by the general and local changes, especially the heart hypoxia due to the combined action of the heart congenital diseases and of bronchopneumonia.

Bronchopneumonia

Morphopathologic changes of enteropathies in 161 children's intestinal endobiopsies.

The authors examined microscopically 161 jejunal biopsies of which 142 presented a pathologic mucosa. The two sexes were equally represented and the prevalent age was between 1 and 2 years. Nearly one third of the cases were acute enteritides and the remaining ones--granulative and atrophic enteritides; none of them was hypertrophic. The causes of these enteropathies are various.

Influence of deuterium on the spleen immune system.

Following administration of deuterium to white rats changes of dysimmunitary-immunitary depression occurred. At the beginning the changes involved the whole spleen parenchyma, with marked lymphocyte depopulation of the red pulp and a decrease of the lymphod follicles. After about 4 - 7 days important amorphous deposits were formed, located exclusively perifollicularly and only in the spleen. The authors suggest the dysimmunitary globulinic-paraamyloidic nature of these deposits which, in their opinion, are produced by deuterium through a chemical mechanism. The differential diagnosis was only made with Gamma-Gandy nodules, because no such changes are found in pathology. It is not known why this deposition takes place exclusively in the spleen and especially around the lymphoid follicles. The authors raise the question whether some methods could be found which might direct the immunitary blockade to certain organs.

Drug-induced immunodeficiency associated with nodal Kaposi's sarcoma.

A 40-year-old male showed a syndrome of acquired immunodeficiency after a prolonged use of antidiabetic sulfamides. The lesions were revealed by the biopsic examination of inguinal lymph nodes. Immunodeficiencies are usually associated with malignant lymphoma: our case was, however, associated with Kaposi's sarcoma.

Relationship between structural and ionic changes in cardiosclerosis.

The parallelism between hypoxic changes in the myocardium revealed by Lie's technique and by fluorescence microscopy and the ionic changes (Na+, K+, Ca2+) was studied in 51 autopsy cases. The Lie technique was positive in 52.6 per cent of the cases of cardiosclerosis with myocardial infarction and in 15 per cent of the cases of cardiosclerosis without infarction, while fluorescent areas were found in all cases of infarction and in 35 per cent of cardiosclerosis cases without infarction. Na+ and K+ were decreased and Ca2+ ions were increased in both ventricles and in both sexes, both in infarctions and in cardiosclerosis cases without infarction. Ionic changes are more probably related to the intensity of cardiosclerosis rather than to age or sex.
