[Microbial etiology of the MMA syndrome (mastitis-metritis-agalactia) in swine raised commercially].

A total of 147 uterine-cervical exudates and milk samples from 165 lobes of the mammary gland of sows with clinical symptoms of mastitis-metritis-agalactia (MMA) were studied microbiologically. It was found that greatest was the share of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus organisms taking part in the microbial etiology of the syndrome. Second ranked Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Corynebacterium pyogenes along with some aerobic sporulating bacilli.

[Cytological research on the vaginal mucosa in cows with estrous cycle disorders].

Cytologic investigations were carried out of a total of 140 cows with regard to the vaginal mucosa in the event of disturbed functions in the course of the sexual cycle: hypofunction of the ovaries (71 animals), persisting yellow bodies (34 animals), and estral and postestral cases of metrorrhagia (35 animals). Chamov's trichromatic method was employed to stain the smears and Véznik's cytogramme method--to carry out the recordings. It was found that in the case of ovarian hypofunction the mixed type of cell pictures prevailed (47.8 per cent), followed by the estrogenic type (39.4 per cent), and the progesterone type (12.6 per cent). In the case of persisting corpora lutea the mixed type of cell picture prevailed too--64.7 per cent, while the estrogenic and progesterone types were 17.6 per cent. Featuring in the postestral and estral metrorrhagia was the estrogenic type of cell picture (51.4 per cent), while the mixed type accounted for 45.7 per cent of the cases, and the progesterone one--for 2.8 per cent. It is suggested to use the cytovaginal method in combination with the routinely employed clinical and laboratory tests for the overall evaluation of the condition of the genital system in cows.

[Drug resistance of bacterial strains isolated from sows with the clinical picture of mastitis-metritis-agalactia].

The disk method with Ericson and Bauer's solid nutrient media were employed to ascertain the drug resistance of a total of 54 strains of Escherichia coli, 25 strains of Staphylococcus aureus, 11 strains of Streptococcus pyogenes, 7 strains of Corynebacterium pyogenes, 7 strains of Streptococcus uberis, 2 strains of Streptococcus agalactiae, and 1 strain of Streptococcus disgalactiae isolated from utero-cervical exudate and milk samples of sows with clinical symptoms of mastitis-metritis-agalactia (MMA). It was found that gentamycin only suppressed 100 per cent of the strains. So far as the other chemotherapeutic agents were concerned the organisms showed a varying extent of resistance. After determining the sensitivity of the strains to drugs two groups of pigs (from which the strains referred to were isolated) were subject to treatment. All 20 sows of the first group were treated with oxytocin only, while the 446 animals of the second group were treated with gentamycin in combination with oxytocin. It was found that effective therapy in the case of MMA was impossible with the application of preparations on the base of the hind lobe of the pituitary only. It is necessary to use chemotherapeutic means tow which the isolated organisms are susceptible.

[Morphological changes in the genitalia of culled sheep].

Morphologic studies were carried out on the genital organs of a total of 102 culled ewes in a postestrous season. In some 44.12 per cent there were clearly manifested gross lesions. Endometritis forms accounted for a highest percent--13.7, followed by uterus pigmentation--12.75 per cent, and hypoplasia of the uterus--11.76 per cent. Histologically, the ovaries presented yellow body cysts--13.00 per cent, follicular cysts--6 per cent, and chronic salpingitis with hydrosalpinx--19 per cent.

[Cocks with experimentally induced acute typhoid].

Acute typhoid infection was induced in cocks of the New Hampshire breed at the age of 14 months within the period of intense productivity. Bacteriologically, there were in the viscera of cocks died of the acute infection organisms of Salmonella gallinarum--the isolates were from the heart, liver, spleen, and testis, while in the viscera of infected birds that were killed no such organisms were isolated. Histologically, there were necrobiotic and degenerative lesions in the epithelial cells of the seminiferous tubuli as well as disturbances in the process of spermiogenesis. The morphologic changes seen in the parenchymal organs were analogous with those that have been demonstrated so far. Cytologically, the semen of the infected cocks presented pathologically changes spermatozoa and anomalies of their head and tail; a large number of erythrocytes and leukocytes were also found.

[Histological characteristics of the testis and epididymis of calves during postnatal development].

A histologic investigation was carried out of the testis and epididymis of a total of 42 calves of the Black-and-white grouped in 14 test groups. The animals were currently castrated after the age of 2 months and were raised in the open. Material for investigation was taken on the 1st and 15th day, and once in every following month up to the completion of 12 months of age. It was found that up to the 3rd month there was no lumen in the testicular tubules, but only differentiating Sertoli cells and gonocytes were seen. Spermatogonia and spermatocytes were first observed at the age of 4 months, and prespermatids and sporadic spermatids--in the 8th month. Single spermatozoa in the phase of final shaping appeared in the 10th month, and completed spermatogenesis--in the 11th month. The histogenesis of the wall of the tubules of the epididymis completed earlier as compared to the histogenesis process in the testis--by the age of 8 months. Later on there were morphologically in the epididymis some proliferation and folding of the tubules with widening of the lumen, whereupon the amount of the surrounding connective tissue relatively decreased.

[Localization of alkaline and acid phosphatases in the testes and epididymis of calves during postnatal development].

A histochemical investigation was carried out after Gomori's method on the activity and localization of the alkaline and acid phosphatase in the testis and epididymis of 28 calves of the Black-and-white breed as dependent on their age--from the first day following birth to the age of 12 months, divided into 14 test groups. It was found that both enzymes had analogous localization in the testis as well as in the various portions of the epididymis, however, the activity of the alkaline phosphatase was higher as compared to that of the acid phosphatase. While in the interstitium of the testis and epididymis on the 1st, 15th, and 30th day following birth the alkaline phosphatase had low activity the acid phosphatase on the same dates was found in the epididymis only.

[Clinical aspects and therapy of anaphrodisia in cows].

Clinical investigations were carried out of a total of 1675 cows to elucidate the reason for anaphrodisia. The functional activity of the ovaries was determined by the use of cytovaginal smears stained after Chamov. Animals with anaphrodisia on the base of ovarian hypofunction were treated with hormonal preparations of gonadotropic action, while those with persisting periodic corpora lutea--with prostanglandin or the yellow bodies were manually removed. it was found that anaphrodisia in cows was more largely due to ovarian hypofunction (78.5 per cent), and to a lower extent--to persisting yellow bodies (21.5 per cent). In the case of ovarian hypofunction very good results were obtained with the use of gravohormone and prolan, and in the case of persisting corpora lutea--with the use of prostaglandine F2 alpha. The manual removal was associated with low conception rate and higher index of insemination. The cytovaginal smears could be used as an adjunct for the indirect determination of the functional activity of the ovaries.

[Case of a leiomyoma in the uterus and cervix of a sheep].

Morphologic studies were carried out on the genital organs (uterus, cervix, oviducts, and ovaries) of a 3-year-old sterile sheep. A gross lesion was found in the region of the uterine bifurcation, consisting of a tumor-like formation of a 3 cm dia, pale gray cross-section surface, and elastic to hard consistence. Histologically, proliferation was seen of the smooth-muscle cells in various directions within the uterus and cervix. It was demonstrated to be a primary leiomyoma, originating from the myometrium. Its gross and microscopic appearance resembled the leiomyomas found in the remaining parts of the body of other mammals and man. The endometrium presented desquamation of the protective epithelium, necrobiosis of the uterine glands, activation of the local cell elements, and oedema of the stroma. There were persisting corpora lutea, atretic follicles, and sclerotic changes in the ovaries. No changes were found in the oviducts.

[Clinical, cytological and microbiological studies of the MMA syndrome].

Clinical, cytological, and microbiological investigations were carried out of a total of 793 sows in the course of 10 days after farrowing. It was found that the MMA syndrome was manifested in the first days following farrowing with higher temperature, changes in the genital organs with a purulent discharge from the first to the third day, and lesions in the mammary gland with inflammatory processes or decrease in the milk secretion. The cell content of milk of the diseased sows was higher. The microbiologic study of uterine, vaginal, and milk secretion led to the isolation of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Staphylococcus epidermidis as well as mixed infections and other bacteria as causative agents of MMA.

[Pathohistological changes in the mammae and sex organs of sows with the MMA syndrome].

Studied were morphologically the udder and genitalia of 13 sows with the mastitis-metritis-agalactia syndrome (MMA) and of 3 normal sows from the first to the third day after farrowing. In 53.80 per cent of the cases there were histological changes of acute catarrhal and purulent mastitis, and in 23.08 per cent--degeneration of the glandular epithelium, 23.08 per cent having hypoplasia of the milk alveolae. In 61.80 per cent of the cases the changes in the udder were accompanied with changes in the uterus (catarrhal and purulent endometritis). There were in the ovaries of both the diseased and the normal sows persisting corpora lutea and massive atresia of secondary follicles.

[Histological endometrial changes in cows with latent endometritis].

Histologic studies were carried out through biopsy of the endometrium of 61 barren cows. The animals showed no visible clinical signs of a disease of the genital organs. With the method used with cows affected with latent endometritis there were in 57.37 per cent of the cases degenerative and inflammatory changes (49.18 per cent of the diseased animals were with chronic catarrhal endometritis, and 8.19 per cent had atrophic endometritis), and 42.62 per cent showed no changes in the endometrium. The latent endometritis observed was manifested with degeneration and desquamation of the surface epithelium, and a moderate lymphocytic and plasmacellular infiltration along with necrobiosis of the uterine glands and proliferation and hyalinization of the connective tissue in the propria and the walls of the blood vessels.
