Like other prototroph bacteria, Mycobacterium phlei was found to incorporate thymine into its DNA very poorly. As a result of a rapid thymidine-to-thymine conversion, thymidine incorporation also proved to be inefficient. Thymidine incorporation could be somewhat enhanced by pretreatment of the cells with uridine. When radioactive adenine, and particularly uracil, were used as precursors, highly labelled DNA could be obtained from the cells, although the majority of radioactivity was found in the RNA. Uracil was thus found to be the most suitable precursor for labelling phage DNA. On the basis of these findings, uracil is recommended for in vivo labelling of Mycobacterium and mycobacteriophage DNA.
The transplantable MC-29 virus-derived hepatoma is a suitable model for studying the influence of immune status on virus-derived hepatomas in chickens. It was found that both humoral and cellular immunologic reactions have a role in the pathogenesis of virus-derived hepatomas and that virus-derived hepatomas can be influenced by nonspecific immunostimulation. The lymphoid system was profoundly altered in hepatoma-bearing chickens; this cannot be neglected when studying correlations between immune reactions and carcinogenesis. Profound changes were also observed in protein synthesis and the steroid receptor system of hepatoma-bearing chickens compared to healthy birds; this also complicates the understanding of the role of immune mechanisms in carcinogenesis.
Immunization of CBAT6T6 mice with MC-29 hepatoma antigen did not change the take of Rous sarcoma virus, Schmidt-Ruppin strain [RSV(SR)] mouse tumors after sc transplantation. Immunization with MC-29 hepatoma antigen only slightly increased the average survival time of the mice and significantly decreased tumor growth only at the minimal lethal dose level. Immunization of mice with MC-29 hepatoma antigen and immunization with chicken Rous sarcoma gave similar results; both elicited much less transplantation resistance than immunization with irradiated RSV(SR) mouse tumor cells. The data indicate that there are common tumor-specific transplantation antigens of MC-29 hepatoma and Rouse sarcoma, but further in vitro experiments are needed to prove this.

The effect of six-months rachitic diet on the articular cartilage of 12 white Whistar male rats has been studied using light, polarisation, and electronmicroscopes. On the basis of our observations radical changes could be noticed. The intracellular accumulation of glycogen and lipid and the necrosis of cells in the proof/inner/zone indicate the modifications of the cell's structure. The effect of permanent diet on the ground substance of articular cartilage was identified by irregular collagen fibers, and quantitative and qualitative changes of GAGs. On the basis of several author's argumentations it can be supposed that different illness/insufficiency of liver and kidney, and disturbance of resorption in human/can induce similar changes of articular cartilage which was produced by a long term rachitic diet. The cytological picture after long lasting rachitic diet is comparable with the arthrosis.
