Quantum thermal conductance of electrons in a one-dimensional wire.

We use an electron thermometer to measure the temperature rise of approximately 2 x 10(5) electrons in a two-dimensional box, due to heat flow into the box through a ballistic one-dimensional (1D) constriction. Using a simple model we deduce the thermal conductance kappa(Vg) of the 1D constriction, which we compare to its electrical conductance characteristics; for the first four 1D subbands the heat carried by the electrons passing through the wire is proportional to its electrical conductance G(Vg). In the vicinity of the 0.7 structure this proportionality breaks down, and a plateau at the quantum of thermal conductance pi(2)k(2/B)T/3h is observed.

Conductance quantization at a half-integer plateau in a symmetric GaAs quantum wire.

We present data from an induced gallium arsenide (GaAs) quantum wire that exhibits an additional conductance plateau at 0.5(2e2/h), where e is the charge of an electron and h is Planck's constant, in zero magnetic field. The plateau was most pronounced when the potential landscape was tuned to be symmetric by using low-temperature scanning-probe techniques. Source-drain energy spectroscopy and temperature response support the hypothesis that the origin of the plateau is the spontaneous spin-polarization of the transport electrons: a ferromagnetic phase. Such devices may have applications in the field of spintronics to either generate or detect a spin-polarized current without the complications associated with external magnetic fields or magnetic materials.

Zero-bias anomaly and kondo-assisted quasiballistic 2D transport.

Nonequilibrium transport measurements in mesoscopic quasiballistic 2D electron systems show an enhancement in the differential conductance around the Fermi energy. At very low temperatures, such a zero-bias anomaly splits, leading to a suppression of linear transport at low energies. We also observed a scaling of the nonequilibrium characteristics at low energies which resembles electron scattering by two-state systems, addressed in the framework of two-channel Kondo model. Detailed sample-to-sample reproducibility indicates an intrinsic phenomenon in unconfined 2D systems in the low electron-density regime.

Efficient single photon detection by quantum dot resonant tunneling diodes.

We demonstrate that the resonant tunnel current through a double-barrier structure is sensitive to the capture of single photoexcited holes by an adjacent layer of quantum dots. This phenomenon could allow the detection of single photons with low dark count rates and high quantum efficiencies. The magnitude of the sensing current may be controlled via the thickness of the tunnel barriers. Larger currents give improved signal to noise and allow sub-mus photon time resolution.

Imaging fractal conductance fluctuations and scarred wave functions in a quantum billiard.

We present scanning-probe images and magnetic-field plots which reveal fractal conductance fluctuations in a quantum billiard. The quantum billiard is drawn and tuned using erasable electrostatic lithography, where the scanning probe draws patterns of surface charge in the same environment used for measurements. A periodicity in magnetic field, which is observed in both the images and plots, suggests the presence of classical orbits. Subsequent high-pass filtered high-resolution images resemble the predicted probability density of scarred wave functions, which describe the classical orbits.
