Natural killer (NK) activity in normal donors undergoing leukapheresis.

The effect of leukapheresis performed with intermittent flow blood separator on normal donors NK activity is presented. There was statistically significant decrease of NK activity immediately after leukapheresis (p less than 0.001) which did not return to predonation values 1 day after leukapheresis (p less than 0.05), however, none of the donors values fell outside the normal range. It seems that NK cells are not as quickly replaced as T lymphocytes.

Osteolytic lesion in chronic myelogenous leukaemia.

Destructive bone lesion of the femur was observed in one patient from a series of 103 patients with CML. Numerous myeloblasts were seen on touch preparations of the fresh surgical specimen obtained by open biopsy of the affected area. Bone marrow and peripheral blood differential count were compatible with chronic phase of CML at this time. 5 months later blastic crisis developed. Local radiotherapy produced effective palliation of pain but did not prevent blastic transformation of CML. The treatment of blastic crisis was unsuccessful and patient died 3 years after diagnosis of CML, 6 months after the first clinical evidence of bone infiltration.

Clinical course and results of treatment of erythroleukaemia.

13 patients with erythroleukaemia were observed between 1971-1982. The initial laboratory findings revealed normocytic anaemia with the presence of erythroblasts up to 73% of nucleated cells. The leukocyte count was normal in 5 patients, low in 5 patients and elevated in the rest. Thrombocytopenia was present in all patients. The bone marrow showed hyperplasia of erythroid series. In the majority of cases structurally abnormal erythroblasts could be found. Myeloblasts in peripheral blood and bone marrow were found at diagnosis in 12 patients. In the terminal phase, the bone marrow showed the picture of acute granulocytic leukaemia, only in one patient of acute monoblastic leukaemia. Partial remission was obtained in 6 patients, the rest did not respond to any protocol. Survival time amounted to 2 to 30 months after diagnosis.

Effect of short-term levamisole therapy on delayed hypersensitivity.

A randomized trial of short-term Levamisole treatment was undertaken in a cancer population unresponsive to dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) to determine whether this agent increased delayed hypersensitivity. Of 100 patients entered, 50 received Levamisole (150 mg daily x 3) during DNCB challenge. The other 50 patients were challenged but not given the drug. The conversion rate to DNCB+ was 20% (10/50) for those treated and 12% (6/50) for controls. The difference is not significant. When all 100 patients were considered there was a statistically significant inverse relationship between extent of disease and the incidence of conversion to a DNCB reactive state. Levamisole as given does not appear to have a major influence on delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity.

Delayed hypersensitivity reactions in patients with acute leukemias and blastic crisis of chronic granulocytic leukemia.

Delayed hypersensitivity reactions were studied in 34 patients with acute leukemias and 13 patients in blastic crisis of chronic granulocytic leukemia during the course of the disease. All patients were skin tested with PPD, Candida antigen, SK/SD and DNCB. A positive correlation existed in majority of patients between the response chemotherapy and delayed hypersensitivity reactions in the tested patients.
