Relationships between electrodermal activity and symptomatology in schizophrenia.

The present report studies the differences between schizophrenic responders and nonresponders within the different symptomatologic groups of the Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms (SANS) and the Scale for the Assessment of Positive Symptoms (SAPS). The relationship between the different electrodermal activity parameters and the scores on the scales was also analyzed. The results showed that nonresponders had negative symptoms. In addition negative symptoms registered a general fall in all electrodermal-activity parameters.

Effect of theophylline on nuclear retention of oestrogenreceptor complexes: correlation with oestrogen responses.

In the ovariectomized adult rat uterine oedema induced by 0.01 and 0.1 micrograms oestradiol-17 beta/100g body weight increased further in the presence of theophylline. Nuclear retention of oestrogen-receptor complexes also increased in response to theophylline both in vivo and in vitro. Theophylline decreased the number of eosinophils in the blood and concurrently decreased oestrogen-induced uterine eosinophilia at doses of 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 1, 10 or 30 micrograms oestradiol/100 g body weight, through a mechanism independent of glucocorticoids. There was, therefore, no correlation between changes in the number of uterine eosinophils and changes in uterine wet weight induced by theophylline and oestrogen. It is suggested that the presence of oestrogen-receptor complexes in the nucleus for at least 4 h is a prerequisite for the induction of uterine oedema and growth in the presence of theophylline and oestradiol-17 beta.

Autoradiographic study of the development of the neostriatum in the rabbit.

Autoradiographic labelling has been employed to analyze the morphogenesis of the neostriatum. Pregnant rabbits received a single intraperitoneal injection of tritiated thymidine at different stages of gestation. Careful microscopical observation of the autoradiographs shows that cellular components of the neostriatum originate between days 15 and 18 of the intrauterine life from a layer of proliferating matrix cells that lies on the floor of the anterior part of the lateral ventrical (ganglionic eminence). From this proliferating layer, precursor cells migrate outwards to reach the developing neostriatum in a sequential fashion according to two gradients of histogenesis. Thus, it was found that neurons formed at early stages occupy a ventromedial position in the neostriatum, while those formed at later stages occupy a dorsolateral position (ventromedial to dorsolateral gradient). Furthermore, the present study indicates that the rostral regions of the neostriatum arise somewhat later than the caudal ones, demonstrating the existence of a caudocephalic gradient of cytogenesis.

Habituation and sensitization processes in depressive disorders.

The aim of the present study was to investigate further into habituation and sensitization processes in depressive disorders. The depressive subjects were 27 outpatients. All of them were diagnosed according to DSM-III-R criteria. Controls were 27 normal subjects. The amplitudes of electrodermal responses and the basal levels were recorded during a stimuli series of 15 80-dB tones and of 1 100-dB tone in the 11th trial. The depressive patients displayed lower basal conductance levels and lower conductance amplitudes in orienting responses to the first stimulus and to stimulus change. No differences were found in conductance response amplitudes of stimuli series, although a tendency towards smaller conductance amplitudes in depressive patients was observed before stimulus change. A trend towards habituation was detected in both groups, but no differences between them were present, neither the habituation velocity of depressives was found to be unlike normals. Our results display lower responsivity in depressive patients, which reflects alterations in the sensitization process.
