[Serum levels of beta-seminoprotein (beta-Sm) in patients with breast cancer].

Serum levels of beta-Sm (a component of human seminal plasma) were measured in patients with breast cancer or mastopathy by RIA method. 9.4 +/- 9.5 ng/ml in control healthy adult women and 11.7 +/- 15.7 ng/ml in 8 patients with mastopathy were observed. Whereas, in 30 patients with breast cancer including 28 pre-operation and 2 recurrence 64.5 +/- 52.3 ng/ml were observed. Especially, high levels of beta-Sm (135.8 and 182.3 ng/ml) in the recurrence were detected. Each case of 8 post-operation was below 50 ng/ml. Fifty-seven percent of patients with breast cancer including pre-operation and recurrence were showed over 50 ng/ml. In histological typing, the beta-Sm levels of papillotubular carcinoma were higher than that of scirrhous carcinoma. In tubular carcinoma, 45% of stage I, 67% of stage II and 100% of stage III, IV and recurrence cases were over 50 ng/ml. The evidence suggests that serum levels of beta-Sm is useful for the diagnosis of breast cancer.

[Elution behaviors of elements from the hair (author's transl)].

The elution of the neutron activated elements out of hair soaked in some organic solvents and EDTA solution was studied. Soakage of the hair sample, which was washed with water and acetone in advance as IAEA's proposal, in ether and acetone for 30 minutes each resulted in no elution of Hg, Zn, Co and Se. Elution of Zn and Co from the powdered hair sample soaked in 0.1 M EDTA solution was rapid, while Zn did not elute out from the cut hair (2 approximately 3 mm length) on the same condition. Hg, Se and Au were not eluted out by 0.1 M EDTA solution in the both case of cut hair and of powdered hair. Br was removed by 0.1 M EDTA solution from the cut hair and from the powdered hair with equal ease.

[Neutron activation analysis of human hair--interrelation of hair constituents (author's transl)].

In an attempt to study the availability and limitation of analytical data of human hair as an indicator of environmental pollution and/or of human health effect, concentrations of elements in 202 scalp hair samples collected from local population in the Tokyo Metropolitan area were determined by instrumental neutron activation analysis. The correlation coefficients between concentrations of 13 elements in each sex and in each age group were calculated and discussed. There were significant correlations between some pairs of elements, i.e. Na-K, Br-Cl, Ca-Zn and Ca-Mg, in all five age classes in both of male and female, indicating that the correlations were consistent. Ca was observed to be reversely correlated with Cl. No significant correlation was apparent between Hg and Se, when the correlation coefficient was calculated using logarithmic converted concentration data.

[Neutron activation analysis of human hair--multivariate analysis of factors influencing on trace element contents in hair-- (author's transl)].

As a part of IAEA research project, "Activation analysis of hair as an indicator of contamination of man by environmental trace element pollutants", a survey was carried out to elucidate the levels of various trace element concentrations in hair of local population in the Tokyo Metropolitan areas, by applying instrumental neutron activation analysis. A total of 202 scalp hair samples were collected from the inhabitants classified by sex and five age classes. Irradiation was made in the Rikkyo University 100 kW TRIGA MARK-II reactor. Using several combinations of irradiation time, cooling time and counting time, forty elements were determined. The relationship between several trace element contents in hair and such factors as sex, age class, hair treatment, smoking habit and dental treatment, was analyzed by using the method of multiple regression. It was shown that (1) Hair treatment had a predominant effect on the contents of bromine, magnesium and calcium in hair, (2) Aging and smoking contributed increasing mercury content in hair, and hair treatment acted reversely.
