The method of electron microscopy was used in studying the antero-parietal area of neonatal rats born from mothers treated by desoxycorticosterone-acetate (DOCA) during the last 7 days of gestation (II group) or last 14 days (III group). The animals of the III group were given greater doses of DOCA. The neocortex of experimental newborn rats had accelerated differentiation of glial elements: differentiating glioblasts and astroblasts were noted more frequently, while the III group of animals had in addition single cells looking like oligodendrogliocytes. Processes of differentiation of glioblasts were more pronounced in the III group of rats whose mothers were given greater doses of DOCA and during a longer period of time while processes of proliferation were more pronounced in the neocortex of newborn rats of the II group (mitosis figures most often).
Electron microscopic methods were used to study the antero-parietal area of the cortex of newborn rats from intact mothers (I group) and rats born after intramuscular injection of desoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA) to pregnant rats during the III trimester (II group) in dose 10 mkg/100 g of the body mass or during the II-III trimester of gestation (III group) in dose of 2 mkg/100 g. By the moment of delivery the hormone dose in the both experimental groups was gradually decreased up to 0.8 mkg/100 g of the body mass. Prenatal treatment by DOCA resulted in the following changes in the structure of hematoencephalic barrier: ultrastructural changes of endotheliocytes and pericytes showing accelerated synthetic and metabolic processes; lengthening of interendotheliocytic dense junctions, increase of the amount of astroblast peduncles; accelerated development of the basement membrane (lengthening and thickening) and differentiation of astroblasts. Signs of accelerated differentiation of glioblasts and vascular wall were much more pronounced in the neocortex of the III group of animals. However, part of the vessels were surrounded by edema. The perivascular edema was accompanied by loosening of the basement membrane, flattening of endotheliocytes, pericytes and increase of their electron density.
Pregnant rats have been injected intramuscularly with hydrocortisone-acetate or desoxycorticosterone-acetate (DOCA) for the III or the II-III trimesters of pregnancy. In the last case the animals are given not only greater doses of the hormones, but during a longer period. By the end of the pregnancy the drug dose decreases. In mother-rats after hydrocortisone injections the adrenals mass increases; after DOCA the body mass increases, and that of the adrenals drops. In the offspring hydrocortisone produces decline of the thymus and adrenals mass, as well as neutrophilic leucocytosis, lympho-, eosino-++- and monocytopenia. Just the opposite, DOCA results in lympho- and monocytosis, in increasing morphofunctional activity of monocytes. Common effects in hormonal action is demonstrated as underdevelopment of the adrenals, in decreasing thymus mass, in development of neutrophilic leucocytosis and eosinopenia. With increasing doses and duration of prenatal injections of corticosteroids in rats the mass of the adrenals and thymus drops even greater, stimulating effect of the hormones on the neutrophilic granulocytopoiesis decreases.

Desoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA) was injected intramuscularly to pregnant rats at the III, or II-III trimester of pregnancy. By the end of pregnancy with increasing body mass of the female rats, the hormonal dosage dropped. The newborn rat skin was studied. The prenatal effect of DOCA resulted in thinning the epidermis, the decreasing dosage in certain activation of the epithelial proliferative activity and in appearance of foci of its hyperplasia. The hormone in the dose 0.8-1.0 mcg/100 g of the body mass activates the proliferative ability of fibroblasts, elevates the quantity of tissue basophils, increases secretory activity of both of them; this produces thickening of the derm. In the microvessels morphofunctional activity of endothelium increases, in the basal membrane contents of PAS-positive substances drop, the wall is often infiltrated with lymphocytes. Correlations between the cells and other structural components of the skin intensify. When the dose of DOCA increases and the time of the injection is short, the proliferative and secretory activity of fibroblasts is inhibited, but morphofunctional properties of the tissue basophils are stimulated. Congestive phenomena develop in the microvessels, mitotic activity of endotheliocytes is inhibited, in the basal membrane amount of the PAS-positive substances sharply decreases, perivascular edema develops in the connective tissue. Weakening or imbalance of the correlations is observed.
Electron microscopy was used to study the effect of durative protein-caloric insufficiency on the ultrastructure of neurons in the V brain layer of 40-day mice. The perikaryon of most nervous cells showed insignificant elements of destruction, focal rarification of ribosomes, deaggregation of Nissl's substance, expansion of the cysterns in the cytoplasmic network, changes in mitochondria, etc. In the cytoplasm of separate neurons, the destructive processes were more pronounced and involved almost the whole cytoplasm. They were also found in most dendrites of large and medium size of the V cortical layer. At the same time most neurons demonstrated marked signs of the compensatory-adaptive processes (an increase in the amount of folds in the nuclear membrane, an increase in the quantity of lisosomes, an enhanced activity of the axo-dendric part of the synapses, etc.).

Methods of light microscopy and morphometrical analysis were used for studying semithin sections of the antero-parietal portions of the cortex of neonatal rats from mothers treated by desoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA) during the last 7 (II group) of last 14 days (III group) of gestation. Animals of the III group were given greater doses of DOCA. Experimental neonatal rats had greater absolute and relative masses of the cerebrum and the thicker cortex: in the II group at the expense of enlargement of neurons, greater amount of glioblasts and the volume of neuropile; in the III group--at the expense of still greater neuron sizes, enlargement of glioblasts and their greater number, as well as the growth of the neuropile volume. In the neocortex of the II group of animals processes of proliferation of glioblasts were more pronounced, greater doses and amount of actions of DOCA (III group) being followed by processes of reinforced differentiation of nerve and glial cells. Experimental animals were found to have greater amount of microgliocytes, hypertrophy of endotheliocyte and pericyte nuclei. Symptoms of blood stagnation and perivascular edema were very rarely noted in neonatal rats of the III group.
