[Clinical significance of adhesive properties of leukocytes and blood serum in patients with multiple sclerosis].

Adhesive blood properties have been studied in 100 MS patients with the help of the new method developed on the basis of the leucocyte adherence inhibition (LAI) test, which was based on the calculation of the ratio of adhesive cells to non-adhesive ones. The value obtained was called the Index of Spontaneous Adhesion (ISA), while the respective indicator reflecting the effect of adhesion strengthening under the influence of autoserum, being expressed by 30% and more, was named the Effect of the Adhesion Strengthening (ES-a). Blood samples of 54 donors and 31 patients with other neurological diseases were used as controls. Statistically significant increase of ISA values of MS patients was detected as compared to the group of donors. The highest indices of ISA and ES-a were found in the primarily progressive course and at the stage of MS exacerbation in the remitting course. Correlation between levels of adhesion and clinical features as well as parameters of clinical and humoral immunity are described. A role of membrane and soluble forms of adhesion molecules in initiation and progression of the immunologic process in MS is discussed.

[The role of serum 'adhesive factor' and leukocyte sensitization in pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis].

The reactivity to the myelin basic protein, brain gangliosides purified derivative and also the influence of the serum on the cells adherence were determined by micromodification of the leukocyte adherence inhibition (LAI) test. 46 multiple sclerosis patients, 21 patients with hereditary disease and 41 donors were examined. The cellular sensitization to the myelin basic protein and brain gangliosides was revealed in 57% of the multiple sclerosis patients. The leukocyte adherence was increase in 53.5% patients when autologous serum was added. The adherence factor was most often found (90% case) in patients with severe neurological deficit. It is suggested that this factor is a connected t the increased levels of circulating adhesion molecules in multiple sclerosis patients.

[Clinico-immunologic correlations and various characteristics of the lymphocyte receptors in hepatocerebral dystrophy].

Clinical and immunological studies were performed in 45 patients with HCD. A group of patients was investigated by conventional immunology tests. spontaneous and active rosette formation, theophylline test, immunofluorescent B-lymphocyte investigation, IgA, IgM, IgG and circulating immune complexes (IC) levels measurement. Monoclonal antibodies were used to count T- and B-lymphocytes, T-helpers and T-suppressors in another group. [3H]-spiroperidol binding to blood lymphocytes was studied in 28 patients. Immune indices were found to be related to the disease duration, degree of visceral deterioration and the duration of Cu-depleting drugs administration. After a prolonged treatment with D-Penicillamin or Cuprenil immune indices returned to normal levels while the count of theophylline-sensitive lymphocytes remained unchanged. The mechanisms of metabolic and immune interrelations in HCD are discussed.

[Immunologic disorders in cerebrovascular lesions associated with livedo (Sneddon's syndrome)].

In combined immunological investigation of 24 patients with Sneddon syndrome, 16 showed the decreased content of T-lymphocytes and theophylline-sensitive cells, increased content of B-lymphocytes, increased levels of IgM and circulating immune complexes. In 80% of the patients the leukocyte adherence inhibition test has revealed the blood cell sensitization against nervous tissue antigens, basic myelin protein of purified protein derivative. The data suggest the participation of autoimmune mechanisms in the Sneddon syndrome pathogenesis.

[The dynamics of immunological indicators in the treatment of patients with multiple sclerosis with prednisolone combined with plasmapheresis].

The dynamics of the immunological parameters was studied in 17 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) who received prednisolone therapy in combination with plasmacytapheresis. The authors measured the counts of blood lymphocytes, T- and B-cells, active, theophylline-sensitive and theophylline-resistant lymphocytes levels of IgA, IgM, and IgG, and of circulating immune complexes. Marked clinical improvement was attained in 9 patients, moderate improvement in 7 cases. The dynamics of the immunological parameters depended on the clinical characteristics of the disease. The best correction of immunological characteristics was observed in patients with exacerbation of the process, remittant course, and moderate severity of the disease. The authors discuss the variable reactivity of theophylline-sensitive lymphocytes to the treatment.

[Immunologic abnormalities in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis].

A comprehensive immunological examination of 20 patients with various clinical manifestations of lateral amyotrophic sclerosis (LAS) was carried out. The authors determined the total lymphocyte count, the percentage and absolute ratio of T- and B-lymphocytes of the blood, subpopulations of active, theophylline sensitive and theophylline resistant lymphocytes and also the content of serum immunoglobulins A, M and G as well as the circulating immune complexes (IC). Patients with LAS exhibited a decreased total count of blood lymphocytes and increased the percentage of B-cells and IgM. The ratio of the number of the theophylline resistant and theophylline sensitive cells was also found to change at the expense of a decrease in the latter (T-suppressors). Patients with different duration and severity of the disease were shown to have some differences in their immunological indices. The role of the immunopathological reactions in the pathogenesis of the disease is discussed.

[Thymus-dependent and thymus-independent blood lymphocytes in multiple sclerosis].

In 65 patients with various clinical manifestations of disseminated sclerosis, the percentage and absolute content of T- and B-lymphocytes, as well as of the three classes of immunoglobulins (IgA, IgG, and IgM) were examined. Use was made of spontaneous and active rosette formation. B-lymphocytes were determined by the immunofluorescent method of detecting superficial immunoglobulins, and by complementary rosette formation. The serum immunoglobulins were determined by the radial immunodiffusion method. The content of T-lymphocytes in patients was found to vary, which was largely observed in patients with the remitting course of the disease. The content of B-lymphocytes and immunoglobulins G and M was found to be increased significantly, this increase being observed especially frequently at active stages of the disease. The importance of the discovered anomalies in the immune status for the disease pathogenesis is discussed.

[Quantitative evaluation of the T- and B-systems of immunity in various hereditary diseases of the nervous system].

In 37 patients with some hereditary diseases of the nervous system (deforming muscular dystonia, hepatocerebral dystrophy, essential tremor, etc.), as well as in 22 healthy subjects (donors), the percentage and the absolute content of the T- and B-lymphocytes in the blood were determined. Use was made of the reactions of spontaneous, active, and complementary rosette formation and determination of the B-cells from superficial immunoglobulins. In all the hereditary diseases listed a drop of the content of thymus-dependent lymphocytes and an increase of the capacity of lymphocytes for complementary rosette formation were revealed. The data obtained can be, probably, interpreted as evidences of a secondary immunodeficient state, possibly, caused by metabolic disturbances which are known to play an essential role in the pathogenesis of hereditary diseases of the nervous system.

[Indirect immunofluorescence and complement absorption test characterization of anti-brain antibodies in schizophrenia].

The content and tropism of anticerebral antibodies were examined in 20 schizophrenic patients using the indirect immunofluorescence and complement fixation tests. With the aid of the latter the antibodies were revealed in 15 patients, the antibodies to the homologous brain being more frequent in patients with a more severe, continuously progressing schizophrenia, while the antibodies to a heterologous (rat) brain were more often detected in patients with slowly progressing forms of the disease. In 18 patients, the indirect immunofluorescence test showed fixation of immunoglobulins on the nervous tissue components, such as, neurons, myelin, vascular walls. Rather frequently fluorescence of the microglia cells was observed: according to literary data this is not the case with sera of neurological patients. Of attention was a selective fluorescence of the canaliculi observed in examinations of the renal tissue. The data obtained point to a participation of the immunological reactions in the schizophrenia pathogenesis, these reactions involving various morphological and functional systems.

[Possibility of using the indirect fluorescent antibody technic to analyze immunoglobulins in certain neurogenetic diseases].

Results of examining the sera of 11 normal donors and 37 patients with various neutogenetic diseases using, the Coons indirect immunofluorescence technique are presented. The patients' immunoglobulins could be better fixed on nervous tissue components than those of the control donors. This seems likely to be due to both a rise in the content of serum immunoglobulins and accumulation of specific anticerebral antibodies in the patients' blood. It is suggested that in all cases of using indirect immunofluorescence the quantitative determination of immunoglobulins and serum titration should be carried out.

[Biochemical and immunological induces of the blood in Parkinson's disease and their correction with the help of laser therapy].

The influence of laser therapy on the course of Parkinson's disease (PD) was studied in 70 patients. This influence appeared adaptogenic both in the group with elevated and low MAO B and Cu/Zn SOD activity. Laser therapy resulted in reduction of neurological deficit, normalization of the activity of MAO B, Cu/Zn-SOD and immune indices. There was a correlation between humoral immunity and activity of the antioxidant enzymes (SOD, catalase). This justifies pathogenetically the use of laser therapy in PD.
