Identification of the bacterium associated with haemorrhagic septicaemia in rainbow trout as Hafnia alvei.

An unidentified bacterium responsible for epizootic haemorrhagic septicaemic disease in rainbow trout was recently described. This organism exhibited some antigenic similarity to Brucella abortus and to Yersinia ruckeri and was presumed to belong to the family Enterobacteriaceae. Further biochemical characterization and DNA relatedness studies showed that pathogenic fish strains are Hafnia alvei.

A new species of fish-pathogenic bacterium antigenically related to classical Brucellae.

A bacterial epizootic in trout (Salmo gairneri, Richardson) characterized by haemorrhagic diathesis is described in its acute and subacute form. The disease could be reproduced with the isolated new bacterial species. Two basic features characterize this bacterium: I. growth at 41 degrees C (water bath) on cultivation in solid and liquid media and 2. antigenic relationship to the classical brucellae. Immunoelectrophoretic analysis revealed a common antigenic determinant in the LPS of the isolated fish-pathogenic bacterium and that of classical brucellae (S form).

[Discovery of rams shedding Brucella ovis by immunochemical study of the seminal plasma].

Clinical, bacteriological, serum and immunochemical experiments were carried out on rams, infected with Br. ovis. The most advisable for the discovery of infectious rams proved to be the immunochemical research on the seminal plasma. The demonstration of immunoglobulin fractions in the seminal plasma of rams of the infected group permits to find out the rams, detaching Br. ovis, without treating the animals with the abortive form of the infection.

[Immunological activity of the blood sera from cattle with chronic mycotoxicosis].

Attempts were made to disclose and reproduce the immunologic activity of the blood sera of cows, aborted fetuses, and newborn calves in feeding the cows with feeds acted upon by small amounts of toxic moulds. Studied were blood samples of cows in advanced pregnancy or such that had freshly calved, of cows with liver dystrophy, and of newborn calves with toxic dyspepsia. The methods of immunodiffusion and immunoelectrophoresis were employed. It was found that in continuous feeding with mould-affected forages the toxins that gained access into the body attacked chiefly the liver. Along with other changes it induced the release of a complex antigen that was likely to bear the character of both the toxin and the liver proteins. It is believed that the process of building up of specific immune defense against mycotoxins is more complex and continuous. Thus, the immunity obtained is not so effective as in the case of microbial infections.

[Hemorrhagic septicemia in rainbow trout due to Yersinia ruckeri sp. nov].

Bacterial hemorrhagic septicemia in rainbow trout is reported for the first time in this country, with Yersinia ruckeri as causative agent. The identification of the isolated strains was carried out on the basis of morphologic, cultural, and biochemical properties. Described are the morphologic changes, giving some epizootiologic data. Stated is the employment of an immunochemical method for differential diagnosis, based on changes that take place in the plasmal lipoproteins of diseased trouts. It has been found that the immunoelectrophoresis of sera of trouts infected with Yersinia ruckeri, using rabbit antisera against trout plasmal proteins reveals only traces of the molecularly destroyed alfa- and beta-lipoproteins.

[Immunoprophylaxis and serodiagnostic studies of abortion in cows caused by bacteria of the Mimeae group and the genus Yersinia].

Tested was the prophylactic effect of a vaccine against abortions in cows caused by bacteria immunologically related to R Brucella organisms. Results pointed to the substantial drop in the number of abortions in the vaccinated animals. Reported are also results of serologic investigations by the complement-fixation test with cows showing abortions and sterility.

[Antigenic analysis and immunological studies of the uterotropic bacterial strains SH6 and 01 isolated from aborted cows].

The uterotropic strains SH6 and O1 were studied immunoelectrophoretically to establish their antigenic relationship. The more readily diffusing component of the O-antigenic fraction of the strains proved immunologically identical with LPA of the R Brucella organisms, while the slower component showed common determinants with the O-antigenic fraction of Yersinia pseudotuberculosis. Immunodiffusion revealed that the O-antigenic fraction of the O1 strain and LPA of the S Brucella organisms contained common antigenic determinants having a weak immunologic activity, and this could explain the agglutination reaction after Wright and Huddleson of the sera from cows with infections caused by the uterotropic strains described. It was established through electrophoresis that in contrast to Yersinia enterocolitica 373 the O-antigenic fraction of the uterotropic strains is immunologically identical with LPA of the R Brucellae. An analogy is shown to exist between the immunologic activity of cow sera from infected animals and the A substance as well as at higher agglutination titers after wright of substance B as described by Amarasinghe.

[Bacterial infection in cows associated with abortion, endometritis and sterility].

Isolated were two types of bacteria (having common morphologic and cultural behaviour and related antigenic composition) from aborted fetuses and placentae of cows with a positive reaction after both Huddleson and placentae of cows with a positive reaction afterboth Huddleson and Wright. They were shown to be new species of the group Mimeae and the genus Yersinia. It was demonstrated through immunodiffusion and immunoelectrophoresis that these new bacteria present antigenic relationship with Brucella organisms. A common O-antigen determinant was found to exist in the isolated bacteria and the S-and R-Brucellae and Br. ovis. The pathogenic effect was tested of the newly isolated bacteria on experimental animals, establishing a certain degree of uterotropism. An abortion was reproduced in a pregnant heifer by means of the intravenous injection of a bacterial culture. The serologic reaction presented by the animal proved comparable with that of cows exhibiting a natural infection process.
