[New perspectives on depression].
Traditionally depression was considered as an episodic pathology; however, at present it is seen as a longitudinal disorder that can progress, in most of the cases, in a episodic way throughout the patient life and, in a minor percentage of patients, in a chronic way. The new longitudinal vision has changed the antidepressant treatment guidelines. The duration of the treatment of an episode has been set up in a minimum of six months. When the risk of new episodes is high, prophylactic treatment should be considered in order to keep an euthymic mood.
