Intermanual coordination in relation to handedness, familial sinistrality and lateral preferences.

Intermanual coordination assessed by alternating finger tapping and finger-tapping asymmetry were investigated in 105 healthy right- and 105 left-handers and related to handedness, familial sinistrality and lateral preferences (in hand-clasping, arm-folding and eyedness). Compared to right-handers, left-handers with less pronounced left-hand preferences (Subgroup B) showed higher values in intermanual coordination and lower values in finger-tapping asymmetry. Moreover, familial sinistrality and eyedness interacted with handedness effects. While in right-handers intermanual coordination was significantly higher in subjects with dominant left eye, in left-handers of the Subgroup B it was somewhat higher in those with dominant right eye. Higher values in intermanual coordination and reduced asymmetry in finger tapping may be associated with a greater bihemispheric control and better performance in fast bimanual movements.

Patterns of lateral preference in psychotic patients.

Two tests of lateral preference (hand-clasping and arm-folding) were investigated in 50 adult right-handed healthy controls and in 42 right-handed psychotic patients. In the psychotics, hand-clasping and arm-folding with uppermost left positions were less evident than in the controls. In the psychotics with uppermost right positions in both tests (including handedness, i.e. unilateral right), good prognostic clinical features were most pronounced. These results, which were predominantly found in the males, are interpreted on the basis of possible relationships between hemispheric asymmetries and lateral preferences.

Instability in functional motor laterality of children and adolescents with endogenous psychosis and predominantly motor disturbances.

A group of eight unmediated right-handed children and adolescents with endogenous psychosis and predominantly motor disturbances and two right-handed control groups (6 healthy subjects and 10 patients with different psychiatric diseases) were investigated with the help of a tapping-test series. The most important finding was related to differences in the stability of functional motor laterality between controls and psychotics. Stability of instability in functional motor laterality was identified by referring to the standard deviation (SD) of percentile right-left tapping differences calculated for each subject for the various parts of the tapping-test series. The high SDs in psychotics, in contrast to the low SDs in both control groups, point to increased variations or instabilities in the functional superiority of the preferred hand. Instability in functional motor laterality in this test is considered characteristic of this subgroup of patients, and may be due to a partial relapse to a lower hierarchical stage of handedness.

Functional motor asymmetries correlated with clinical findings in unmedicated schizophrenic patients.

Motor asymmetries were investigated in 28 unmedicated schizophrenic in-patients and 32 healthy controls. Of the patients, who were assessed as right-handers by a handedness questionnaire, 46.4% changed their motor laterality in at least one part of the tapping test series, probably because of a decrease of functional hemispheric asymmetry. These patients were characterized by more pronounced psychotic symptoms than those who did not change motor laterality. According to the tapping frequency, two groups of patients could be distinguished: the high- and the low-frequency group. In both groups certain tapping data could be correlated with characteristic clinical features. While the findings in the high-frequency group point to an enhanced activation level of the right hemisphere and appear to be correlated with the onset of positive symptoms and better prognosis, the findings in the low-frequency group may be a reflection of a disturbed function of the left frontal region and seem to be correlated with a gradual chronic development of predominant negative symptoms with worse prognostic implications.

[Changes in functional cerebral laterality of patients with torticollis spasmodicus].

By comparing the results of tapping with and without simultaneous speaking and by evaluating their lateral differences the probable lateralization of functional speech centre was established in 28 patients with torticollis spasmodicus and 28 healthy controls. In doing this, it became evident that unlike the controls the patients as a hole in a significant way lateralized the speech centre more frequently to the right. The changed cerebral laterality in the patients was supposed to be stimulated by pronounced emotional conflicts and to be involved in the disease of torticollis spasmodicus.

[Relation of alpha wave asymmetry to other laterality findings in schizophrenic patients and healthy controls].

Thirty two right-handed patients with acute paranoid hallucinatory schizophrenia treated without drugs and thirty two right-handed healthy controls were investigated with the aim of finding out, if the results obtained from the tests in laterality correlated with the asymmetries in the alphawaves of the EEG data. As the most important result of the study, we could establish that in the patients, in contrast to the controls the alphawaves occurred on the right hemisphere whatever the additional findings in laterality were. The present results obtained from our patients indicate that in this stage of the disease the right hemisphere is relatively autonomous.

[Sensory stimulation-induced alpha-rhythm asymmetry of schizophrenic patients].

Changes in the alpha-waves produced by the "Berger-reaction" and simultaneously occurring alpha-wave asymmetries were evaluated in 40 right-handed patients with acute paranoid hallucinatory schizophrenia treated without drugs and 55 right-handed controls. Compared to the controls the laterality of alpha-wave in the patients was shifted to the right and increased at the same time. The former change may be due to an increased reactivity of the right hemisphere, while the latter points to a disturbed relationship between the two hemispheres.

[Alpha-rhythm asymmetry of schizophrenic patients before and after tryptophan administration].

Before and one hour after tryptophan loading laterality differences in the alpha-waves were evaluated from the EEG data obtained from 16 right-handed patients with paranoid hallucinatory schizophrenia and 16 right-handed controls. The alpha wave asymmetry of the patients which was increased and shifted to the right before tryptophan loading may be due to a disturbed relationship between both hemispheres. Particularly in the patients, the pronounced changes in the laterality of alpha-waves after tryptophan loading demonstrate that like psychotic substances tryptophan and its metabolites may bring about changes in subcortical and cortical asymmetries.

[Polygraphic therapy control in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome--a case report].

In a female patient with Gilles-de-la Tourette syndrome (GTS) the clinical improvement during drug therapy of haloperidol and clomipramine was proved with the help of a polygraphic method (simultaneous recording of different electrophysiological and vegetative parameters). Before intensifying therapy symptoms of vegetative irritation, motoric discharge patterns with high amplitude in correlation with movements and permanent activity with low amplitude even in a state of external motoric rest were found. After intensifying therapy vegetative stabilization and ceasing of any electrical activity in the EMG could be demonstrated. It is concluded that the effects of therapy in GTS may be checked and quantified by means of polygraphic methods.

[Effect of repeated serotonin injections on temperature regulation in the rat].

The effect of repeated serotonine injections was investigated in thirty Wistar rats tested under normo-, hypo- und hyperthermic conditions. 7 mul of a 0.5% serotonine solution (5HT) were injected into the third ventricle at 1-hr intervals. Temperature responses such as oxygen consumption and rectal temperature were measured and the heat loss was calculated. Intraventricular serotonine produced cooling in all animals. The central mechanisms of heat production were inhibited and those of heat loss were activated. The serotonine responses were most pronounced in hypothermic rats and least effective in hyperthermic animals.

[Influence of mediopreoptic stimulation on temperature regulation in rats before and after serotonin injection].

The effects of electrical stimulation of the Area praceoptica medialis (APM) and intraventricular serotonine injection were investigated in thirty Wistar rats tested under normo-, hypo- and hyperthermic conditions. Temperature responses such as oxygen consumption and rectal temperature were measured and heat loss was calculated. The effects of the first stimulation before serotonine injection were compared with those of the second one after serotonine application in order to prove the influence of serotonine on temperature responses due to APM stimulation. On the other hand, the influence of stimulation on changes produced by serotonine injection should be shown by the recordings of the second serotonine responses with stimulation effects and by comparison of these with those of the first serotonine responses without stimulation effects. The first APM stimulation depending on the rectal temperature before stimulation resulted in decreasing oxygen consumption in hypothermic rats while increasing that of hyperthermic animals. There was a little decrease of rectal temperature under hyper- and normothermic conditions. while under hypothermic conditions animals showed marked depression. The increase in heat loss, however, was least in hyperthermic rats and most pronounced in hypothermic animals. The second APM stimulation did almost not affect the temperature responses after serotonine application in normothermic rats, while causing supercooling agin under hypothermic conditions and insignificant cooling at hyperthermic environment temperature. Comparison of the first and second stimulation effects revealed statistical significant differences at normo-, hypo- and hyperthermic temperatures. The results are discussed under consideration of the different starting conditions before the first and second stimulation. These findings do not indicate that serotonine would shift the sensibility of mediopraeoptic structures and thus unequivocally modifies stimulation effects.
