[Benign tumor of the small intestine causing recurrent hemorrhage].

The authors reported a 56-year-old man, who suffered from repeated massive gastrointestinal bleeding. The source of the bleeding was leiomyoma of the ileum. Abdominal computertomography and selective enterography confirmed the tumour's localisation. After partial resection of the ileum the patient had no more complaints.

[Nutritional lead poisoning--a differential diagnostic problem in abdominal pain].

The authors report on the case of a 44-year-old female patient as well as a 51-year-old male patient, who were taken to hospital with abdominal complaint of unknown origin. The symptoms in the case of the female patient suggested cholecystitis, whereas in the case of the male patient chronic pancreatitis. Following detailed examinations the authors have explored nutritional lead poisoning of a married couple. Within a short time--after Ca-EDTA treatment--they have become free of complaint. After a survey of the literature the authors analyse the diagnostic possibilities of the patients with the symptoms of abdominal colic pain and the way to the diagnosis, respectively.

Gallstone, causing bleeding and pyloric stenosis syndrome, diagnosed by urgent gastroscopy.

By means of urgent gastroscopy the authors, right before surgery, recognized a pyloric stenosis syndrome and a gallstone that had caused massive melena in a female patient of 73. Cholecystectomy and a Billroth II gastric resection were performed. Following surgery, a transitory duodenal fistula developed. After a month of clinical treatment the patient was sent home cured. This case draws attention to the importance of removing a gallbladder filled with stones as soon as possible in order to prevent complications, as well as to the necessity for gastroscopy in cases of unexplained abdominal complaints.

Diagnostics of malformation syndromes using an available computer program.

Increased attention to the malformation syndromatology is motivated by the importance of accurate diagnosis and its necessity in genetic counselling. Given the great number of malformation syndromes, it is logical to make use of computers in their ability perform differential diagnostics. The aim of our present examinations was to assess the benefit that an experienced pediatrician can obtain from an available program. The "Syndrome Program" of R. Winter and M. Baraitser was applied. Using coded symptoms, the computer produces a short list of possible diagnoses, which can then be assessed by the user. References and syndrome features can be recalled and compared with those in undiagnosed cases. The diagnoses of 100 different syndrome features can be recalled and compared with those in undiagnosed cases. The diagnoses of 100 different syndromes were controlled. The method applied yielded very good results. The computer diagnosis of malformation syndromes is a helpful way of supplying information. It may promote the standardization of diagnostic practice, international cooperation and epidemiologic studies in different regions.
