D-penicillamine induced Goodpasture's syndrome in Wilson's disease.

Fatal pulmonary hemorrhages and rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis occurred in three patients with Wilson's disease (hepatolenticular degeneration) who had been treated with penicillamine for 2 to 31/2 years. Light microscopic studies of the kidneys showed severe glomerulonephritis with crescent formation, and the lungs showed intraalveolar hemorrhages. Although the clinical and pathologic abnormalities were those of Goodpasture's syndrome, immunofluorescence microscopic studies in the one case tested showed an interrupted, rather than linear, fluorescence pattern.

Mammalian hepatic lectin.

A rabbit hepatic protein that specifically binds asialoglycoproteins is also a lectin that agglutinates untreated human and rabbit erythrocytes and neuraminidase-treated erythrocytes from rat, mouse, and guinea pig. Both binding of asialoglycoproteins and agglutination of erythrocytes appear to involve reaction on the same active sites of the hepatic protein.

Systemic absorption of intrauterine copper.

A comparison of the various effects, in rats, of intrauterine insertion of copper-64 or copper-67 wire with the effects of intraperitoneal injection of copper sulfate solutions has shown that copper ions, dissolved from the wire, are locally active contraceptively and, in part, systemically absorbed.
