[Waist-hip and waist-thigh index in obesity especially in relation to weight reduction].

Waist-hip index (WHI) and waist-thigh index (WTI) were determined in 18 obese males and 24 females, respectively, before and after weight reduction, in comparison to this in 12 males and 10 females in normal weight. Under weight reduction the two indices in males were significantly reduced in correlation to the relative weight. In females analogous changes could not be proved. Furthermore, the WHI was significantly lower in persons with normal weight than in obese ones (males and females), the WTI only in females. - In obese males, however, not in males with normal weight the WHI processes a prediction value for the atherogenic risk, which is at least adequate to the value of up to now wellknown parameters (relative weight, body mass index etc.).

[Clinical, biochemical and anthropometric studies and determination of biological age in relation to body mass in a longitudinal study].

On 46 adipose persons (25 males and 21 females) and 53 test persons with normal weight (35 males and 18 females) at the age of 25-40 years since 1976 clinical, biochemical and anthropometric investigations as well as the determination of the biological age have annually been performed. Several of the parameters established (e.g. cholesterol, triglycerides, fasting blood sugar, blood pressure among others) in the course of 9 years within the well-known normal regions draw towards the adequate valid limit value to the pathological entity. The results of the study distinctly show the central role of obesity for the development of risk factors. Despite the partly only with a certain tendency recognizable behaviour of single parameters after 9 years from our point of view the longitudinal method represents itself as a very well suitable method for establishing dynamic processes and risk factors of age.

[Relation between obesity and atherogenic risk factors in a longitudinal study].

Since 1980 clinical, biochemical and anthropometric examinations have been performed annually on 46 adipose patients (25 males, 18 females) and 53 test persons (35 males, 18 females) at the age of 25 to 40 years. Several of the established parameters (e. g. cholesterol, triglycerides, uric acid, blood pressure among others) in the course of the 5 years within the known normal regions drew towards the adequate limiting value to the pathological. The results of the study clearly show the central role of the overweight for the formation of risk factors. Despite the partly only in a certain tendency recognizable behaviour of individual signs after 5 years from our point of view the longitudinal technique represents itself as a very well suitable method to realize dynamic processes and risk factors of ageing.

[Behavior of serum lipid parameters--results of a longitudinal gerontologic study].

Within the Leipzig longitudinal study from 1968 to 1978 in 158 test persons (46 males, 112 females) cholesterol and the total fatty acid spectre were gas-chromatographically determined in regular intervals. Serum cholesterol as well as proportions of linoleic acid increased significantly. By the significant decrease of the palmitic acid the percentages of the saturated fatty acids altogether decreased despite increase of stearic acid. In these cases the differences between males and females as well as between persons with normal weight and overweight more and more evened up. Ascertained correlations existed between reduction of the relative weight and decrease or more insignificant increase of cholesterol on the one hand and increase of linoleic acid on the other. The latter phenomenon is above all to be traced back to the fat-reduced diet and to the diet rich in polyene fatty acids which was more and more applied mainly by older test persons in the course of the longitudinal study, which thus may lead to antiatherogenic constellations of serum fatty acids.

Aged↗

[Cardiovascular disease, body weight, nutrition and age].

In 979 adipose (236 males and 743 females) test persons and 341 test persons with normal weight (149 males and 192 females) at the age from 18 to 55 years nutrition anamnestic, clinical, biochemical, anthropometrical and social-economic examinations were carried out. Our results on the frequency of coronary insufficiency and hypertension in adipose persons could clearly confirm that this in males as well as in females in all age groups was higher than the frequency in persons with normal weight. In the comparison of the eating habit between test persons with normal weight and overweight with coronary insufficient and hypertension and without these diseases became evident that there is a significant connection between the uptake of energy, the consumption of saturated fatty acids, cholesterol, carbohydrates and the coronary insufficiency and hypertension. Preventive and curative measures for influencing coronary risk factors are therefore necessary.

[Human biological age].

By biological age is understood that state of the organism, with the inclusion of both physical and psychic parameters, which has been reached at a certain point of the chronological age. Experiments are reported which have been conducted in an attempt to measure the biological age of human beings by the aid of batteries of tests. So far, more than 1000 subjects have been examined, and they include both "normal subjects" and groups of patients showing such risk factors as overweight, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus. The motivation for such studies is the desire to satisfy practical needs. To tackle this problem it is necessary that investigators representing the various disciplines of gerontology should work closely together.

[Nutrition in old age (author's transl)].

The present study on nutrition in old age was intended to make some of its fundamental problems a subject of discussion. It was meant to show that there still are some unclear and vague conceptions in this field. But the problems raised should not prevent the application of those recommendations in every-day work which seem to be justified on the basis of present knowledge. It appears to be essential that, in spite of the general character of such guidelines, the individual's specific situation should always be given priority when considering his case. Advice on nutrition should not resemble strict orders, but take into account both the physical and psychic as well as the social situation of the individual concerned. As is always the case in geriatrics, the precept holds good that elderly people should be allowed rather than fortbidden to do things they like.

[Socioeconomic importance of obesity].

It is reported on the annual deficiency of work, the stay in the hospital and the sanatorium as well as on the expenditure for these criteria which were established on 346 males with normal weight and 1,041 males with overweight and females at the age of 18--59 years within the research project nutrition and effect. With growing overweight in women as well as in men the days of deficiency of work, the duration of the stay in the hospital and the cost for this increase. In these cases the dependence on age concerns persons with normal weight and obese persons. It is referred to the prevention and early treatment of obesity.

Absenteeism↗

[Fat consumption, blood lipids and age (author's transl)].

The serum lipid values (total lipids, cholesterol) and the amounts of fat components (total fat, cholesterol, saturated and multiply unsaturated fatty acids) in food were determined for 1000 subjects of primary obesity and 200 subjects having normal weight. The age of the subjects included in this study was between 18 and 60. From the second to sixth decades of life, obese subjects showed increases in hypercholesterolemia and hyperlipidemia from 2.3% to 22% and from 4.6% to 26%, respectively. Lower percentages were determined for the controls. The consumption of total fat, cholesterol, saturated and multiply unsaturated fatty acids in food was lower in subjects of obesity than in normal-weight subjects. Problems of the dynamic and static phases of obesity, hyperphagia, hypophagia, and longitudinal behavior are discussed with particular reference to the causes thereof. With males, the intake of all fatty substances contained in food decreased with increasing age. Possible causes of this include changes in environmental and working conditions as well as nutritional consciousness.

[Epidermiologic studies on nutritional behavior of adipose subjects].

In 1,000 obese persons and 250 persons with normal weight detailed anamneses of nutrition concerning the average daily intake of calories, carbohydrates, protein, fats, cholesterol, saturated and manifold unsaturated fatty acids were made. Obese persons ingested less food than persons with normal weight, - findings which on the one hand are explained with the different habits of eating in the dynamic phase (the hyperalimentation takes place above all in this phase) and the stationary one of obesity, on the other hand a further differentiation in hypophages, normophages and hyperphages should be performed. Finally frequency and structure of the meals are of importance. Tendencies of age did not occur in females, whereas all nutrients in males, beginning with the fourth decade of life, were ingested in a smaller degree than in adolescence. Longitudinal studies on the behaviour concerning nutrition are desirable.
