Cardiopulmonary resuscitation skills of dental personnel.

This study assessed the cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills of 25 dental personnel. Theory was tested by multiple choice questionnaire (MCQ) and practical skills assessed using a recording Resusci-Anne manikin. The assessment was based upon the recommendations of the Resuscitation Council of the UK. Seven of the 16 dental students and six of the nine house officers tested passed the MCQ examination. All failed the practical assessment. It is concluded that more emphasis should be placed upon CPR instruction in undergraduate dental courses and that regular update courses are advisable to maintain CPR skill.

An open clinical pilot study of the efficacy and safety of oral terbinafine in dry non-inflammatory tinea capitis.

Ten patients with dry non-inflammatory tinea capitis were evaluated in a pilot study which ran from September 1989 to February 1990. Each patient was given oral terbinafine for 6 weeks; each was followed up 2 weeks later. Eight (80%) were completely cured, one (10%) was mycologically cured and showed minimal signs and symptoms, and another (10%) showed improvement (negative mycology, but persistent clinical signs and symptoms). No topical or systemic side-effects were noted. Terbinafine appears to be an effective and safe antifungal agent in the treatment of non-inflammatory tinea capitis.

Myocardial perfusion in experimentally induced diabetes mellitus.

Diabetes mellitus was induced in rabbits by alloxan monohydrate. At the end of six-week period, animals of the control and diabetic groups (8 rabbits each) were sacrificed and their hearts were excised and perfused using Langendorff apparatus. Results revealed that diabetes had adverse effects on myocardial perfusion. The baseline coronary flow and maximum coronary flow were significantly reduced in diabetic hearts as compared with those of the control. The maximum total coronary flow tended to decrease in the diabetic hearts. Products of the metabolic changes which accompanied diabetes might have directly and/or indirectly caused the observed reduction in the coronary vascular capacity of the diabetic heart.

Electric shock-mediated transfection of cells. Characterization and optimization of electrical parameters.

The effect of various parameters on the electric shock-mediated permeabilization and transfection of CHO cells has been investigated. Up to 70% of the cells can be maintained transiently permeable to erythrosin B for periods of at least 1 h at 20 degrees C. Electrical conditions optimal for transient permeabilization were also optimal for efficient DNA transfection by pSV2neo. However, the DNA must be present during exposure to the electric field for efficient transformation. The same requirement existed for voltage-induced DNA toxicity. The results suggest that DNA moves into the cells by electrophoresis, not by simple diffusion. Based on these observations a simple, rapid procedure for optimizing the conditions for electric shock-mediated DNA transfer into cells has been developed.

Translation of homologous and heterologous messenger RNAs in a yeast cell-free system.

A stable mRNA-dependent cell-free translation system from Saccharomyces cerevisiae, prepared by a modification of the method of Hofbauer et al. [Eur. J. Biochem. 122 (1982) 199-203] was active in translation of exogenous homologous and heterologous mRNAs. Optimal translational activity required the addition of polyamines and yeast tRNA. The m transcript of the M segment of double-stranded RNA, synthesized in vitro using the killer virus-associated RNA polymerase, directed the synthesis of preprotoxin polypeptide (M-p32), which was immunologically identified using antitoxin antibody. Sindbis virus capsid protein and rabbit globin were also translated from their mRNAs. Translation was inhibited by puromycin, sparsomycin and anisomycin. Analogues of the 5'-terminal caps present on most eukaryotic mRNA molecules inhibited translation of added mRNAs, including capped mRNAs and the uncapped killer virus mRNA.

Costs of providing dental services for children in public and private practices.

This study compares the costs of providing children's dental services in three practice settings: private practices, public mobile clinics, and public fixed clinics. Some 15,000 children were provided comprehensive dental care over a three-year period. Results indicate that costs per visit and per child were lowest in mobile clinics and highest in private practices. The differential was partially explained by differences in productivity but mostly by the fact that the price of services in public practices represented costs of production, whereas in private practices they represented market values.
